Gawith Hoggarth’s sandalwood snuff was in the first snuff order I ever made, two years ago. Back then it only came in tap boxes. I was a little disappointed with it, as I felt it smelled more of cheap perfume than of pure sandalwood oil, even when the tap box was brand new. I still used it and found things to like about it, but it fell far short of what I thought a good sandalwood snuff should be. Recently I replenished some of my favourite snuffs, and I decided to try the sandalwood in the mini tub from Mr. Snuff. It is a completely different snuff when it’s fresh in the tub. It’s not perfume-y at all–it has a deep and rich sandalwood scent that is clearly derived from real sandalwood oil. At the moment, I’m regretting that I didn’t bring it to work today–it’s such a treat to have that scent lingering in my nose. If you love sandalwood like I do but have only ever tried sandalwood in the tap box, do yourself a favour and get one of those mini tubs.

The same could be said for all the GH snuffs. I had to reevaluate several after the tubs came along. Years ago all we could get was the tap boxes.
How does it compare to WoS Sandalwood?
@TomStrasbourg: I haven’t tried the Wos one. I have F&T’s French Carotte, which I like but it is pretty heavily perfumed and thus pretty far removed from a straight-up tobacco and sandalwood essence snuff. Anyone else?
@TomStrasbourg: The G&H and WoS really don’t compare. The G&H is on the standard G&H grind and has a slightly perfumey aspect to it; not overwhelming but slightly sharp. The WoS is on their dark virginia grind, the same base as Grand Cairo or Gold Label, and has more of a soft earthy aspect to it. I can say I definitely prefer the WoS Sandalwood, I have a good bulk stash of it, but they are both excellent snuffs.
@Mr. Nose I figured any other kind of sandalwood snuff couldn’t be much if at all better than WoS. Thanks for confirming.
