GH Eucalyptus

I’m not a big fan of Gawith Hoggarth snuffs in general. One I think is a must have in my collection is their Eucalyptus. It’s refreshing, sinus clearing, has a great tobacco presence and best of all, it doesn’t cause nasal congestion. Great as-is or to tame an over the top menthol or medicated. I usually break it out during allergy season and continue all summer. I only break it out in cooler weather if I have a cold. Give it a try.

GH seem to get a bad rap on here - but is it deserved? I recently bought my first GH snuff, CM (Camphor Menthol) and have to say it’s become a firm favourite very quickly (top three). Only bought it as my smoking shop had an offer on it. Have to confess hadn’t bought any GH earlier directly as a result of what I’d read on here. Very clean in the nose, I’ve given some to two friends who also have it as their favourite. So what’s the deal then? Is there some kind of unwarranted anti GH snobbery going on or what? Will definitely try that eucalyptus based on your recommendation. Thanks.

@Hoffwell‌, agreed on CM, good stuff, as is Dry Orange and Medicated. My issues are inconsistency in product for the most part; grind, scent, moisture, nicotine and weight after shipping. I only buy their 25 tubs, which are very good when handled properly. It’s a lot like your favorite restaurant. If you go back for great food and service and they don’t deliver (repeatedly) you vote with your money and your feet and go elsewhere. When they’re good, they’re great. When they aren’t, they can really suck. I think I’ve had at least 5 different versions of Tia Maria and finally just gave up. It can’t be fixed.

I’m a GH fan. The tap boxes are appalling, but in the 25g tubs they do a good snuff. Products do vary according to fluctuations in the base tobacco, but there will always be space in my snuff drawer for some GH and I have their KB plain in bulk. That’s my personal take on it anyway

@50ft_trad‌, I’ve been trying to find GH Plain for so long I damn near forgot about it. You reference KB Plain but there is the elusive GH Plain, which I think is their version of a natural/plain/unscented snuff similar to WoS Natural. Are we talking the same snuff? The GH Kendal Brown is technically a plain tobacco but isn’t a ‘natural’ plain snuff as I understand the working definition. Bulk, like barter, is always better. It helps overcome the fluctuations in all agricultural endeavors. IMHO all tap boxes should be terminated with extreme prejudice. They are an abomination, evil and must be destroyed. If Sir Roderick of Toque can produce a damn fine 10 gram tin, why the hell can’t the competition? Hell, even WoS wee 5 & 10 gram tins beat hell out of any tap box known to mankind. Let’s find the inventor, break out the pitchforks and torches and hang the SOB. @ermtony‌, can you shed some light on this?

I think German snuffs work good in tap boxes. But they probably should ban English snuff in taps. I’ve only tried Gawit Hoggaths Aniseed, I like it but it reminds me of Lowen-Prise. I don’t like the look of G. H. packaging. But it’s really all about what’s inside.

@chefdaniel … not quite sure what you mean. I know GH does a Kendal Brown in scented and unscented. When I got my 25g tub, it just said Kendal Brown, but the bulk drum was labelled KB Plain

Rumor has it that GH produces a plain, natural snuff. Not a plain KB, which is a bit of a different product. I’ve heard it’s very similar to WoS Natural and Toque Natural, but I’ve yet to find it. Kendal Brown is a more processed snuff. Natural and plain are just tobacco, and only tobacco; no scents or casings other than a bit of distilled water, salt and alkali. I wasn’t aware that they did more than one KB, I do know SG has three very similar variations on the basic theme. Just to make things even weirder, there’s been talk that SG Kendal Brown “Plain” has more scent than SG Kendal Brown Original. “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.”

Actually … I might have had a brain fart by saying GH do more than one KB … I think I might have got kerfuffled with SG. Then again, Aireys of Kendal’s site shows a KB in scented and a KB in unscented, so I’m really not sure now. Sorry Chef :-S
