my sniffing technique is getting better i find that if i use the gut to sniff 9 times out of 10 it ont hit the back of my nose i try to aim the pinch from between the top part of the nostril to the middle. and ive finally gotten control out of pinching since i figured out how to do it. i noticed that if i open my finger right as i sniff most of the time all of it will get in there in one sniff and some happens to land at the front of the nose which i gently sniff into the lower part of my nose. i dont know how good this technique is good for coating the inside of your nose. i seem to have the problem that most of it will clump in one spot of my nose rather than coat evenly. any ideas about how to coat the nose more evenly or is the clumping a normal thing
Practice for pleasure. Whatever works for you. In a short time you will snuff unconsciously like you been using it all your life.
Clumping is difficult to fix. Snuff is like dust, it goes where the wind takes it. Short of some nose maintenance (e.g., trimming hairs, clearing it) you really cannot make it change directions. I just don’t worry about it. If it clumps and feels heavy after a while, I just blow it out and start over again.
My brother told me about a technique. Hold a fairly loose pinch against the right nostril (that side chosen purely for explanation purposes, for the mavericks amongst you) but with that nostril pushed closed with your middle finger, and sniff with the left side, and then reverse the process for the left side. Just tried it, and it does seem to work - the snuff has to go sideways before it goes up, so it doesn’t go too far. Just tried it with some Snuffstore Cafe Noir and it seems to work. I think it would work best with finer snuffs rather moist, coarse ones, though.
what do you mean @HR_pufnsnuff
Well, I thought my explanation was pretty clear - which bit do you mean, Jeff?
is there a fool proof way i can take snuff and not hit the back of my throat ive been practicing this since july and im not making progress i though the method i was doing was working it worked for a day then stopped there has to be something i can do to make this easier im even having trouble with medium grind medium moist snuffs
i mean ive tried the bunny sniff method it takes too long and i get snuff everywhere i need to be able to get it in on or two sniffs so i can be quicker in public my breaths are inconsistent its hit and miss and all this is ruining my enjoyment of snuff. i need to be able to get a large pinch in my nose on one or two sniffs so i can enjoy it im tired of feeling like i just started snuffing every day
It still hits the back of my throat sometimes, and I’ve been doing it (full time after the occasioanal dabble over many a year) for the last few years. Have you tried the ‘filling your lungs with air and then sniffing so it can’t go in too far cos your lungs are already at full stretch’ method, or what I call the ‘drop jaw’ one, where you close your throat, close your mouth and just drop your jaw as if in amazement (but with lips closed) so only a little air goes in the nose?
i cant do the jaw drop it doesnt work for me i understand its going to hit hit the back of the throat occasionally but it happens to me ever 3 or 4 sniffs. and the last two orders i have not enjoyed im just getting to the point that i dont enjoy it anymore because of all these things combined taking a sharp breath with my fingers in the middle of my nose works on the left side but the righ i cant find anything that works and bunny sniffs cause more snuff to get on my shirt than in my nose
uncle squintys version of sniff works on my right side and gets snuff exactly where i want it to go and i got the breaths right for about an hour and then its like my body went stupid because i waited about fifteen minutes to take the next one and i couldent find the right pressure again i went through half a 25 gram tin in about four hours practicing it
Sounds like snuff just isn’t your thing: have you tried snus? Just stick it in your top lip and go about your day no need to spit and it is as safe as snuff. General snus is the best swedish snus you can find locally in the U.S. without having to order online.
i mean the box car method works very well for me but its very messy and takes a long time but it does coat my nose better should i just stick with this since i obviously cant do a pinch
the box car works i just gotta practice the pressure and placement i just did about 5 bumps and only a little hit the back of my thoat but like i said its very messy unfortunately
Jeff, when I’m at work I carry a small tapbox (snuffhouse plastic from MrSnuff). When I need a sniff, I quickly tap out a small boxcar for each nostril (not one to split between the two). Quick, clean, and excellent air control. I would also second @basement_shaman regarding the snus. Some is available domestically, but if you order it and like “tobacco” flavors, try Roda Laket Los. Delicious!

@jeffcraft1 When I was first starting out I realized there was a heck of a learning curve with snuff. Obviously, really fine and dry stuff is a heck of a lot harder to take than moist snuff. You are still going to end up with snuff getting too far into your sinuses and even the back of the throat from time to time but with some of the medium/moist snuffs I found it wasn’t nearly as bad. Have you thought about getting yourself a bullet? When I started I put a lot of the fine/dry snuff in a bullet and when I sniffed it I pointed it more towards the front of my nose instead of into my sinuses. This way the snuff would have to hit the nose first. It made it a lot easier to control where it was going and I had to really snort that stuff out of there before I got it too far into my nose… Hope things work out for you.
thank i used to have one but the hopper was too small
I ran into a similar problem… What I would do is put my finger over the hole while holding it upside down and turn the knob a second time to do a double shot. That was usually enough for some of the lighter/finer snuff. I have two of the acrylic/plastic jobs you can get on Mr. Snuff which have a pretty decent sized hopper in them. I’ve also found that I can take a pretty liberal “pinch” between my thumb and forefinger and then while I sniff I gently rub my fingers together and it tends to evenly distribute the snuff in my nose nicely. Works great with Viking Snuff! I just keep the tin under my hand for the little bit I drop and no worries!
I usually put the pinch onto my hand and then break it up so it’s really fine. That seems to work good.
