German Tour of Kendal’s tobacco industry

P

Report by one Lothar Winands (unfortunately in German, but lots of pictures) The focus is primarily on pipe tobacco and tobacco ropes. Snuff is discussed later. http://www.pfeife-tabak.de/Artikel/Reiseberichte/Gawith/gawith.html Apologies if posted before.

I haven’t seen that one before. Good find! Thanks for the link.

Oh, that´s most brilliant. Now that Pöschl Gawith riddle is solved.

P

Well, the area and business hardly smacks of Dallas. The dowdy clothes look like they were purchased from a Boy Scout jumble sale, the carpets, furniture and upholstery from Steptoe & Son and the machinery old enough to be second-hand at the birth of the Industrial Revolution. I particularly like the picture of the fellow with a watering can - not exactly high-tec automation. The grotesque ram’s head mull, meanwhile, wouldn’t lookout of place in one of Kendal’s covens. Even so the link is a good account of a fascinating odyssey into Kendalian industry. Glad you liked it. In one of the pictures you can see the tall tins of snuff that were sent to retailers. Cash-strapped customers would usually buy by the quarter ounce.

Great post, thank you.

Thanks PhilipS for posting.

Michael, ermtony or any other German speaking members. Please elaborate on this as the auto translations to English, I found are not very explicit.

Well, it says that only small amounts of pipe tobacco are produced, because the tobacco tax and VAT are immediately due after production, in the UK (it´s just the same as here in Germany). But it´s different for export products, as their tax isn´t due before it reaches customs at the destination. So you can keep production on a higher level, without having too high immediate costs. And EU customs laws forbid the direct re-import. Of course, it´s “only” VAT for snuff, but still quite a lot of money, as well. So, this says, that the Gawith snuffs from Pöschl are indeed produced at Samuel Gawith, exported to Germany. It explains, why Pöschl offers a “Gawith” snuff (the Pöschl folks couldn´t explain it, cause they simply have no idea) and it´s not available in the UK (besides online stores).

S

Michael, many thanks. No wonder that the auto translators got in a knot, Lol!

X

My impression were that they were Gawith Hoggarth snuffs.

R

Or a misinterpretation of mine, as they write GH in the article and I -wrongly- corrected it to SG, as they visited and talked about the latter all the time.

C

I didn’t know that the “Gawith” brands were produced in Kendal then shipped to Germany for packaging.

R

Me and my contacts at Pöschl neither. Guess I should have asked you in the first place, Maciej!
