Ladies & Gentlemen, if you were asked to vote for one of the abovementioned snuff producers, who will get you vote?
Never tried any GH snuff. They make some great pipe tobacco however!
I’m sorry, what I wanted to ask was: Who will you vote for and WHY ?
If I had to choose it would be SAMUEL GAWITH, but both are rather low on my list of snuffs I like. There are better manufacturers such as Wilsons, Toque, Snuifmolens so It’s rather unusual for me to spend my money on one of this two.
I can’t decide which would be worse, to be stranded on a desert island with no snuff at all or with a dozen flip boxes of GH. I suppose their metalized boxes could be made into fishing lures.
Yeah, I don’t think this is going to be close, hardly anyone seems to like GH. How they have kept making snuff for so long is a mystery to me. Obviously SG here, all my favourite pipe tobaccos seem to be SG as well.
SG Kendal Cream and chocolate flake make great home made snuff’s B.T.W
Samuel Gawith without a doubt. They make some great snuffs. Honey, Black Coffee, No1. High Mill, SP Scotch, Irish D Light, good snuffs. There are only about 2 GH snuffs I can handle. They all have a chemical floral or soapy scent to them, like spraying perfume in a bag then huffing it. I really think GH makes Dean Swift because they both are so similar. I think GH stays in business with their pipe tobacco. Their Black XXX makes a stout snuff.
Never tried the S.G. so. I happen to be one of the few it seems that has been pleased with the few GH snuffs I’ve tried. Whiskey, jasmine, cm, strawberry, and dry orange. I think they are all great snuffs. The strawberry although very extremely perfumey is in my opinion a dramaticly underrated snuff. The scent is well crafted in my opnion. The perfume and the strawberry combine in a manner that has a clear front mid and back scent though more like several mid scents. It reminds me of rolling wine on the tongue. The only other snuffs I’ve really noticed a dramatic and more importantly expertly crafted rolling scent (that what I’ll call it for simplicities sake) are several of the toque offerings especialy the esspreso and choclate (I’ve not tried the new scents yet)
Between those two I’d vote for GH. For any snuff manufacturer, my vote would go to Wilsons of Sharrow, or maybe J&H Wilson.
Thanks to this place, and my own feelings of what I’d like, and the great variety of other choices out there… I haven’t bothered to try any GH offerings. All of the Sam Gawith snuffs that I’ve purchased, I’ve really enjoyed, not that there have been many. One of them that I like very much is the SP #1 High Mill. So here’s a question… Is there a difference between #1 High Mill, and an SP version of the same? I don’t recall where but (I think) I’ve read that the SP is a more scented version. Is this true? SnuffReviews lists them both, but only one is reviewed. Just curious.
It’s been a long time but if I look at my papers here of all the ones I’ve tried it says #1 High Mill: Natural tobacco, mild orange. SP No1: Just natural tobacco.
@ snuff-belgium… No, let me rephrase… I have SP #1 High Mill. It’s an SP. Citrusy, very big bouquet, really nice! I’ve also seen reference to #1 High Mill. And so the question are they the same? Is #1 HM an SP, or no? because SP #1 HM isn’t just natural tobacco, and your papers well… I can’t say.
Yes, they’re the same. The terms seem interchangeable - No 1 High Mill or SP No 1 Hill Mill. The SP is different, unflavoured and mild as SPs go. I think it’s the base for many of their other snuffs. I find it mixes really well with Bruton Scotch!
Tony, I only know (so far) what I read from you guys here and also at snuffreviews, and of course what I then experience for myself. I admit this thing we do is pretty new to me, and so I ask questions, and opinions, and ultimately my own experience becomes the truth for me. I’ve read that for some, the Toque Original has become their go-to SP of choice. This would indicate to me, that for some… the Toque Original is a pretty good SP. Now maybe there’s better, and certainly there’s worse. I have the Toque Original. I like it a lot. I don’t have the experience of a great variety of SP’s (more on order - inbound) but I do have the Sam Gawith SP #1 High Mill. Granted it may be mild but it’s not unflavored and it has a much bigger, more longer lasting fragrance than the TO. That’s all I know. That’s my truth. On Snuff Reviews, there’s a listing for #1 High Mill - with six mini review/comments. There’s also a listing for SP #1 High Mill Scented - with 0 comments. So, maybe - since you’re saying they’re the same, and snuffreviews lists the SP version as scented… that answers my question. But the SP version can’t be unflavored because what I have IS a very fragrant snuff, and I think my nose is still working. Any more comments or info would be welcome…
Yes, the High Mill is flavoured (vaguely orange-like and I love it). I was trying to distinguish it from their plain SP which I don’t seem to be able to find in any online shop. I bought mine at the factory… In fact it doesn’t even appear on their web site!
Got mine from Tim @ SnuffStore, and although he lists it as #1 High Mill and bills it as such… if you look at the enlarged photo, the container says SP #1 HM, and that’s what I received. So maybe I’m still confused, and maybe I’m not… but I don’t really give a sh%t. lol - I like it just fine and will buy it again.
I first got the the High Mill from the factory. The MD who showed me around wrote the label… Oh bugger… it started snowing… So… he wrote SP No 1 HM on the label. I do think it must be the same stuff (but different to the plain SP I mentioned). But you’re right, what the hell! It’s good snuff! Hmmm… the snow seems to be coming down horizontally. Glad I don’t have a lot of driving to do this weekend!
I purchased a tin of No.1 High Mill from snuff Store and wasn’t sure if it would be plain,or scented. Printed on the tin is just “Kendal No.1 High Mill” But to add to the confusion, it tastes scented to me.
I can stand GH menthols like M4X and special medicated but most of theirs are repulsive. I do like the pipe tobacco they make. I am thinking of making some snuff out of some black irish x. I am sure it would have a hell of a kick. If I only had a carton of GH jockey club on that desert island I would be fishing with the boxes too. Please give me some wilsons. The only 2 SG snuffs I have had are afterglow and ccc. both vary nice.
