Received in a plastic 25 gram container, this snuff lid is not appropriate for closure. It’s content’s however, are very unique. A grind similar to that of an American scotch (powdery), it has a light brown color with med/high nicotine content. I enjoy the slight vinegar type scent along with it’s unique nicotine burn, not at all smokey to me. A very refreshing change for a toast and scotch lover like myself.
Gawith and Hoggarth, or Kendal (not to be confused with Samuel Gawith) Irish D is very different to the only other unscented toast snuff I’ve tried, Wilson’s of Sharrow Irish High Toast No.22. WoS IHT is quite smokey, almost bonfire like, and darker in colour to this very pale snuff. I have seen the scent of this one described elsewhere as reminiscent of men’s public toilets before the days of electric hand-dryers, which I think does it a bit of a dis-service. The scent is quite light, lacking in bass notes, and does remind me of something from my childhood, but for the life of me I can’t work out what. Because of that I find it quite a comfosrting snuff, and I have to have just one more pinch, and then another, because I know one day I’ll realise what it is I’m recalling!
I’ve worked it out. If you’ve ever made a fuss of a puppy and nuzzled your nose into it’s ear, you’ll know what Irish D is like. And if you think it’s a weird thing to do, try it.
Just got a tin of this in Missouri, and I guess I was expecting something much different. It was very similar to some of the American scotches I am more accustomed too, yet not quite the same. Absent the smokey scent, perhaps? When I take a smell of the tin I get an almost buttery scent. I was a bit disappointed AT FIRST, because it seemed kind of like something I can get locally… BUT as I try some more I am become glad that I bought it! It has its own character too it that I am starting to like quite a bit. If you like scotches/toasts that are a bit on the simple side and pack a kick, this is surely worth a shot! never had any other snuffs with “Irish” in the title (I know there are a few more) but I am curious about them now.
Irish D Light is considered to be the original and most authentic per Professor Griffiths. http://www.snuffbox.org.uk/
I just got this snuff yesterday. It’s peculiar to me in that it doesn’t really have any specific aroma/flavour… the tobacco flavor itself isn’t quite pronounced either. It’s quite bland. But it has a nice hit, its dry and powdery and fills the nose with it’s creamy softness and is quite satisfactory this way… even though I do seem to reach for it often for the next fix. I like it, but find it odd and inexplainable that I do.
Not a bad description of HDT-IHT really. Some may take issue with bland. Should note a slight smoky aroma.
I edited the title back to its original to indicate the maker (GH) so we know which snuff we are talking about. Its true among the toasts this one has the least flavor. I like it though. I like all the toasts.
