Ok, I must say that with some experience with super dry snuffs ive got the taking it part down, even though i still sniff too hard sometimes and it makes me cough. Well I went to the local grocery store and holy crap. One wall to another of nothing but American Snuffs. Everything that nic rush has and then some. I saw the W.E. Garretts Sweet Snuff so I got a can. This is the first American Scotch ive had that is good and if some hits your throat you are left with a sweet sugary taste thats not all that bad. I think I may venture to some British Toasts now and compare. Seems these fine dry snuffs are great for opening the airways without clogging and pack a nice nic hit while using less. Seems like a bargain,

X

wow, what grocery store? Was it a regional chain?_Everything that nic rush has and then some._Can you elaborate on the “and then some?” I thought Nictotine Rush had everything!

G

Its Piggly Wiggly. Its a southern Grocery Chain. When I meant and then some is the supply. I mean it was 2 to 3 shelves of the typical 1.15 oz bottles and the 10 buck Railroad Mills Maccoboy Then a shelf of the Big bottles that each has, and the shelves under that were the HUGE Drums of Tops and the like. I didnt mean none that Nic Rush carries but ill take a pic and post on here tonight after work, as long as I get off in time. But im not lying when I say the whole behind the counter shleves were just snuff and a small corner for cigs. Weird to say the least.

G

It was a lil bit fo sarcasim on the " and then some " mainly because I couldnt believe they carried all that snuff, I mean I know the old timers mainly use it for dipping but its not THAT popular. Im still confused as to what makes a store carry so much

C

They had everything that Nic Rush has and you bought a can of WE Sweet? What about Maccoboy, Checkerberry, Standard, Roooooster, 3 Thistles, Superior, De Voe, Carhart’s, Honey Bee, Buttercup, Navy, Bruton, Peach, Dental, Tube Rose, Lorillards, Honest, Ralph’s, Square, Strawberry, Wild Cherry, Railroad Mills, Red Seal, Society, Dixie and Starr. Did I forget any?

C

Where do you live, Grim?

G

LaGrange GA Keep in mind in fairly new to snuffing. Im still ina trial and error phase, plus im partial to the Garrett name as its my name as well, lol I got it also because when I chewed i really enjoyed the Levi Garrett brand so Garrett Snuff was an easy choice. Ive had Dental, Bruton ( ouch!! ), Carharts and Navy. Garrett Sweet so far has had the best flavor and nic hit, my head was spinning after a few pinches. LIke I said they had it all, not joking. ( Except for maybe Checkerberry dont remember seeing it on display ). I sat there literally for 5 minutes reading all of the different brand names like, you have to be f-ing kidding me… seriously… you guys have that much snuff and theres no way its gained that much popularity.

B

LOL!

X

How much does a big jar of Maccoboy run?

G

They had it at the store for 9.89 for the 4.65 oz bottle.

T

All I see at my local stores is WE Garrett, regular and sweet, Bruton, and Red Seal.

M

The only thing I’ve found so far is Bruton and two sweets, Navy and something I don’t remember at Winn Dixie. I already have Brutons and I don’t like sweet scotches at all!

G

The one thing I really dont care for in the Scotches is the BBQ flavoring. The Garrett Sweet has a very nice pure tobacco nose and the little bit of discharge that runs down the back of your throat tastes sweet, where other snuffs can taste bitter/or just plain nasty If you had to recommend a very nice American Nasal Scotch what would it be. Im tempted to try rooster but my anxiety is very sensitive to too much nicotine, it puts me in a full blown panic attack.

T

The only one I am curious about is the Maccoboy, as it’s said to have a floral scent.

C

I get a Copenhagen-esque aroma from Maccoboy.

T

That doesn’t sound good to me.

T

I used to work at Piggly Wiggly back in '87 in Saint Mary’s GA.

G

From the reviews ive read about Maccoboy is that it does have a rose scent that wants to come out but the fermented tobacco seems to cover it up. Plus, even looking at the bottle, it seems its near impossible to pinch from so a spoon of some sort would be needed. Im thinking that this may be the only American Snuff ill like. Im really waiting for my B-Day present where ill have several fine toasts and a few different fine grind dholakia snuffs as well.

T

Of the European Toasts I have had(not many), I think F&T HDT is great, and may be considered the best. I also liked alot, the Toque flavored “toasts”. They do have a similarity with the American plain Scotches.

X

I don’t think all the scotches have barbeque flavor. Navy was pretty plain. Ralph’s and Stoker’s were both very nice and not really smokey. Garretts are very smokey and Railroad Mills smokier still. That covers all the scotches I have tried. Yes, use a spoon for Maccoboy, or just fill your snuffbox with it. It has a vague reminder smell of some oral snuffs, but its nice in the nose. Some Bernards products also evoke an oral snuff memory. It must be the fermenting. Grim, don’t rule them all out yet. Plus, Checkerberry is in a different category too, its semi-moist and has a unique flavor.

C

I just tried the WE Garrett scotch for the first time. It reminds me more of a burnt down camp fire than a BBQ. It’s also quite the eye-opener, nicotine wise.

Dead heads? There goes the neighborhood!

LOL! Nice Xander!

Okay i have a question, I’m new to this snuff and to snuffhouse (first post), and I have a question. I just picked up a little 1.15 oz of w.e. garrett scotch snuff the real powdery stuff. I’ve had some really really really burning sensations and some which aren’t as bad but the most recent one i did about five minutes ago burned the whole of my head and felt like i was under a vice grip or something. Then it made my eyes water pretty badly and obviously it burned my nose tremendously. I didn’t cough or sneeze ( i haven’t sneezed yet) it just BURNS like the dickens! It is really relaxing but not too much of a kick. Is there like a beginner snuff, I’ve read the beginners FAQ I’m just wondering if the scotch snuff is supposed to burn so much!! it ALMOST takes the fun out of it…almost

T

My recommendation is to just sniff a very small amout off the back of your hand, like maybe the amount of an apple seed, and just sniff enough, to enter the nose, do not snort it into the lung.

S

I would start with some of the Poschl products, at least that’s what eased me into snuffing. I had been snuffing about six months before I tried an American Scotch. At first it was brutal, but now I am starting to really appreciate the genre (beware of the Rooster). If you are going to start with American scotches, I would also suggest you start with something sweet, like WE Garret Sweet and Mild or Honey Bee.

C

I found the Toque flavors pretty user friendly.

J

I’ll snuff a good Scotch only once or twice a day. In fact there are not too many snuff types that I go on and on with. Why would I? The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

T

Dry Scotches are good snuffs. But then again, I have never found a snuff I didn’t like!

@thetremendoustim: Go back to the FAQ and find the pdf beginners guide to download. It has a list of snuffs recommended for beginners. I would add Toque Chocolate to the list and pretty much any schmalzer. Also the Quit With Snuff brand are pretty easy to sniff. Many like to start on the Pöschl snuffs, but most are a bit heavy handed with menthol, so be warned. Scotch snuffs such as Garrett are wonderful, but really more of an expert level snuff. Hold on to it, you will learn to appreciate it someday. The best thing about snuff is that there are so many kinds to try. If one is not your thing, another one certainly will be. Also, your favorites will change in time, so don’t throw any away! Welcome to the best forum on the internet!

E

The lightly mentholated Bernard snuffs are also good for beginners: Amostrinha (also has camphor) Jubiläums-Snuff Polar Prise Schmalzler Weiß-Blau Zwiefacher As are their Schmalzlers: Aecht Altbayrischer Schmalzler Brasil Doppelt Fermentiert Brasil Feinst Brasil Fresco Klostermischung And also their medium-coarse plain snuffs: Alt Offenbacher Köstlich Civette Extrafein Feiner Offenbacher Cardinal Feinster Kownoer Gekachelter Virginie Pariser Nr. 2

X

good grief! I’ve been spelling Schmalzler wrong for months. How embarrasing! I better go into lurk mode.

E

You could always call it Schmai like they do in Bavaria…

T

Easy beginner friendly, and good snuffs, with no menthol would be the Wow!, Blast, and Temptation snuffs made by Dholakia. They have a medium grind/moisture, no menthol, and a variety of flavors.

Z

I need to try some of that Bernard Zwieficker…

T

@ Z_2K: naughty naughty! lol

C

I’ll agree, the Dholakia’s I’ve tried have been very easy to take.
