I bought, but haven’t received a one pound, unopened tin of Gallagher’s Irish D. It looked like it had been stored carefully for a long time. No rust or visible damage. I’ve seen posters for this snuff that look to be from the 1940s or perhaps earlier. 

Has anyone ever tried this snuff?

Well, it arrived at last. The tin was sealed with tape that looked to be the original. Upon opening, there was a tan colored bag, tightly fit into the can, with a piece of tape on it. It was the original packing. So I carefully opened it, filled an old SG empty tin, stirred it around some, then tried it. It has the toasted scent, but its faded some. But I compared it with some SG Irish D light I had, and it is quite similar. Perhaps its because it was sealed, and never opened, no rust or damage at all. In fact, there is a number stamped on the bottom of the tin that says 42-05, which I’m taking to mean 1942, May. But I could be wrong. It might be that it came with a British soldier during the war, I wonder. I’ll try to post a picture of it up here soon.

I took a little pile of it the other day, put it on a plate, and put it into a toaster over for about 10 minutes, just until it started to give off a bit of smoke. I took it out, let it cool down, and did a couple pinches. It acquired a stronger, almost burned flavor that was quite enjoyable.  I will experiment more with this. Its still a good snuff, though not as flavorful as freshly toasted F&T HDT.

I’ve been mixing this with American sweet scotches with good results. 

Now I’ve gone back to taking this snuff straight. It’s not as good as FT HDT, but it’s pretty good for 60 or 70 year old snuff. It’s lost it’s freshness I guess, but it’s very easy to take in huge amounts.
