FUBAR revisited by Snuffster

Most of what I said about the FUBAR range was around the branding etc and not that much about the snuff itself. After a few chats with Dave at Mr Snuff I have agreed to re-visit the snuffs. What I want to do is concentrate solely on the contents of the boxes, not the image or anything else as I am aware that I may have done Dave a disservice previously. I’m going to give an objective review about each brand over the next week or so. The reviews will be based on taking each snuff exclusively for a few days. Ok, Grunt: Fine, light brown and potent. In terms of consistency think along the lines of HDT or a Scotch. I’ve just got a second consignment and the second can seems to have slightly more moisture than the first. This is probably because of nothing more than a slight flaw in the first can, but this batch is a lot smoother for the slight amount of extra moisture and it eliminates a lot of the burn I felt with the first lot I tried. Its very smooth and easy to pinch and also very easy to snuff. Although I’ve likened it in grind to HDT, it doesn’t seem to hit the back of the throat like a toast can, and for a strong snuff its actually surprisingly easy to take. It says ‘strong, plain’ on the side of the can. I wouldn’t argue with strong, but I don’t think its plain because it does have a very pronounced coconut flavour that lasts in the nose. I would call Toque Natural plain but not this snuff. This is just an observation and the snuff is pleasant for it. I’ve been using this for three days now, exclusively as said earlier. My overall impression is of a good solid snuff that the experienced snuffer will appreciate. The nicotine hit is good and like most fine, strong snuffs I find it head clearing and the overall effect is clean, palatable and with no attendant congestion. This might work well in bullet format as a little goes a long way and bullets tend to deliver half pinches. I like a snuff that I can use all day every day and I tend to use certain brands for weeks on end. The thing that would stop this being an everyday snuff for me is the coconut flavour. Nice for a while, but (IMHO guys) it does get a little bit too much cumulatively. However, for a lot of users this would fit the bill nicely. All round, a good snuff.

This has become one of my favorite snuffs. I use it regularly, and can’t get enough of it. Funny, my can had a small nick in it as well, so I am curious if it is meant to be a bit more moist. I’ll be ordering more soon, so I suppose I’ll find out then. Good review, BTW. ~Snuffy

Thanks Snuffy, it’s really nice with a bit more moisture. Anyway, on to ‘Shot of run’… I’ve been using this all day and intended to take it for the next day or so but something in it clearly doesn’t agree with me as I have now got quite a bad case of congestion - let me make it clear though that I often get this with flavoured snuffs so I’m not suggestinmg any defect, it just doesn’t suit me. However… it has the same grind and colour as ‘Grunt’ so I guess its the same base snuff. I previously said that it reminded me of one of those chocolates that have booze in them and I still get this. If you like that sort of flavour you will really enjoy this snuff. I couldn’t detect rum, but it certainly has a liquor feel to it. Shot of Rum is fine, sweet and gives a moderate nicotine jolt like a HDT. It would be one of those snuffs in my collection - like Royal George - that is more of an occasional pinch than an everyday rotation snuff. I would also guess it would be a good blending tobacco added to something like Toque Natural. On a seperate note, I like the smash boxes that Dholakia are using, they’re neat and not too big in the pocket.

I agree about the name of Grunt. Not plain at all. I like all of the FUBAR line. None of them are my favorites in any of their specific categories, but I like them all enough to buy again. I just took a pinch of Shot of Rum myself. Both it and Grunt tend to find their way to my throat after a few minutes, burns a bit. I’m still learning control. I also agree about the smash boxes. Unlike my Wilson’s tins, they don’t spill everytime I open them.

Hi Xander, the control comes with time, the method I use with strong, plain snuffs is to insuflate the snuff with a very light, sharp pinch so it all goes in at once but with just enough force to take it no further than my nose. The other method is to gently ‘breathe’ it in, which some users find works well.

I actually don’t hit the throat when sniffing anymore, even with dry/fine ones. I think I have the sniffing part down. The snuff just tends to find its way there after a five minutes or so. With some snuffs, this is not painful, but with the fine ones it is. Is this due to the initial sniff, or natural breathing and sniffling?

Xandeer, do you sit up straight when you snuff? When I’m watching TV I normally lean back in a recliner and it’s then when the “snuff” slowly seeps down into my throat. It’s actually not snuff but fluid draining from my nose into my throat which causes the problem for me.

I agree with Pieter, the stuff dribbling down your throat is basically nasal secretions. Its generally accepted that snuff should only ever be sniffed into the front part of your nose and not go anywhere near the sinueses - maybe worth experimenting with technique?

Yes it is nasal secretions. But the snuff finds its way into this. I know becuase I can taste it there. I have some Hopfen there right now. If I spit it out, I see the tobacco. Normally it doesn’t bother me too much, but as said before the FUBARs burn when they do it. I normally am sitting up straight, but this makes no difference. I have used F&T Princes Special laying down without problem though. I will continue to experiment with technique as you guys suggest. I’m almost a month snuffing now, and it is a lot easier then when I started. I also seem to be almost constantly using it.

Certainly, it doesn’t come with a rule book and you’re not doing it ‘wrong’ if you choose to poke it in your eye. I however will leave the sinul method to the hardier members of the human race as I cry like a girl if it gets near mine.

I am with snuffster on the sinul method… I am too much of a wimp I suppose. There are times if I snort too hard on the finer snuffs where I feel like someone just stuck a spear in the rear of my head just behind the ear corresponding to the sniff nostril. Not sure why it is always in that spot? Must be some sort of connection. Has me writhing, though I have to say its great when the pain stops…that rush of endorphins right when the nicotine hits the dopamine receptors…whoah. (Is that TMI? lol.)

Been working my way through the ‘medic’ for a couple of days. Fine, nice golden colour and a good classic menthol flavour. I don’t use menthols a whole lot but I have used at one time or another all of the great traditional medicated snuffs out there. Medic is easily on a par with those and the one it reminds me of most is OandG. Now I know it might be completeley different in its make up, I’m just saying it reminds me personally of it. I can’t see any menthol user not getting on with this offering. Well, I’ve been taking FUBAR for a week now and I have to say I am far more impressed the second time around. Leaving any controversy about branding etc aside I can happily say that these are good snuffs. Ive certainly got a place for the Grunt in my collection from now on. That really is a nice one and I admit I pretty much overlooked them to start with. I truly hope they are a success and turn some of those choking smokers that the joker is laughing at onto the great world of snuff. Snuffster

@ snuffster What’s “.” mean?

Xander. Nothing, ignore it, entered in error due to having fingers like sausages. Nick - Good idea but 10 grammes is too much - just review after you have lived with the snuff a while, i.e more than a few pinches. I was wrong to post my earlier opinions without enough thought so did this to kind of say sorry to Dave as my comments were, arguably, unduly negative. I don’t have a problem with negative reviews, and will no doubt write others, but I did on reflection agree that I could have spent more time with the snuffs.
