Hello! New to the forums and I need some help. I’ve just received a 50g container of FUBAR Grunt and I’m having trouble with it. It’s too “clumpy”. I can’t take a sniff without a chunk rocketing into my nose and hitting my sinuses. So far, this snuff has brought me nothing but watery eyes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
One of the problems with grunt seems to be that it varies so much batch to batch.i only ordered it once and it was fine and dry, nearly like a scotch, but had a cigar smell and i didnt care for it much so never ordered it again. If its still hitting your throat and sinuses despite your best effort, i suggest searching this forum with the word “plugging”…it should return a tutorial by screwtape that is a useful method for dust…or are you saying that it has caked together and formed little compressed dense “chunks”? In that case, maybe strain it. I have a flour sieve that i use when mixing snuffs.
Grunt changes so much from batch to batch, that it is reasonable to suspect that it’s never made from the same tobacco or even by the same process twice. The first edition of Grunt was a rather excellent snuff. V 2.0 was like they ground up used cigars. Can’t say for later iterations, because that’s when I quit with the whole FUBAR brand. Too many disappointments with other things in their line, which are equally inconsistent.
Thanks for the replies! I actually watched a video about the plugging method not too long ago. It works, but I find it both inconvenient and messy. I seem to always get snuff all over when employing this method. And as for the clumping, it seems to clump when I pinch it and form a solid piece. Even if I sprinkle it onto a piece of paper and shake it around, it still forms into little balls of snuff. I’ve just taken up the snuff habit again, so it may just be a case of practice makes perfect. Good to know about the inconsistency of the product though. I find that my jar smells very much like a wet ashtray. I’ll probably just avoid this one in the future. Thanks again.
Yeah, fussing over it is no fun. But does sound like youre squeezing the snuff into a mini pancake between your fingers? I use to do that and end up with what looked like “fish flakes”. I just developed the feel for applying just enough pressure so it didnt fall out my fingers, which also improves the consistency of the flow as you roll the tips of your fingers back when you release. Bigger pinches are easier to hold and not flatten than little ones.good luck!
@Ubiquitous - I use the “plugging” method as well, but because I don’t like the messiness of pinching, I use a snuff spoon (actually the spoon on my pipe tool) and spoon out a pinch onto my thumbnail and take it from there. It seems to come off the thumbnail more cleanly than off the fingers (probably because it’s drier). I personally don’t buy the common wisdom that you should pinch in order to warm the snuff first to develop the aroma, since it’ll get plenty warm once it’s in your nose.
I think the beauty of the pinch over other delivery methods is the control it gives. For snuffs which clump as you pinch them, and especially for those that clump on their own in the tin, the pinch allows you to “crumble” the snuff as you take it. I don’t tend to take a pinch in a single dollop, rather keep sniffing the pinch while I’m manipulating it until it’s gone. I then take another pinch and repeat until the nose feels like it has the right amount in there. I hope that makes sense.
Fubar Grunt, I got some of this a few months back.
I can see why some here refer to it as “ashtray scented”…
my batch is dry and fine and is ok, i guess but it’s definitely not that good of a snuff imho.
I wouldn’t dump it, might come in handy one day but not an all dayer for me that’s for sure!
if yours is clumping, maybe dry it out a bit in a snuffbox?
Yeah, I just played around with it again. I’m able to take a pinch now, but a portion ends up on my shirt. Sniffing any harder results in a sinus invasion. I’m willing to chalk it up to my lack of experience with finely ground snuff. For now, I have other snuff that I enjoy more and is easier to take. I’ll have to revisit this one at a later date. Oh, and I tried drying some out under a lamp for a bit, the problem was not remedied. This may be the way that it’s supposed to be. Anyway, thanks for the advice. Glad to be a part of the Snuffhouse community.
oh you’ll get snuff on your shirt. It’s just how it is. The answer is stop wearing shirts!
Haha. That’s fine at home, it becomes a problem at work though. I’m pretty accurate with the coarser snuffs so I’ll stick to those until I can aim better with the dusty stuff.
Sniff around the edges of your pinch first And wear brown shirts:)
We should all wear “brownshirts”, like the SA, and unite instead for snuff rights! Disclaimer: i find absolutely nothing funny about the SA, and i mean no offense to anyone. Illustrative purposes only.
I had a stock of old, good Grunt. This thread compelled me to open my newly acquired tin. WTH HAPPENED??? A former lovely snuff has now been turned to dreck. I’m saddened by the loss.

Looks like FUBAR has become, well, FUBAR. I actually have a small tin of Willie Pete on the way to me. I never ordered it before. Does anyone know if the variations in batch apply to all FUBAR products? Or is it isolated to grunt? Ive read Willie Pete was actually Dholakia so maybe no issue there.
No experience with Willie Pete, but all FUBAR is Dholakia.
I’m not familiar with how it was, but it is currently not on my list to buy again. The ashtray smell is… Interesting, and I don’t find the nicotine content that high. It’s there, just not “extra strong”.
@Chicago_CA , Willie Pete is basically D White. It’s very good. I got the little tin but would buy it again
Mix your wet grunt with a toast or a scotch . that should make it less clumpy.
@Chicago_CA Willie Pete is finer than D White. Use with caution or lung full of powder

@basement_shaman, you’re right. Just compared them and as fine as DW is the WP is like fine talcum
