From snuffbox or tin?

I received and have been using a Triple Tech snuff box for a couple weeks now and do like it.  I notice however that the snuff dries out in it throughout the day.  I loaded it up with SG Kendal Brown a couple days ago and last night it was nearly bone dry.  So, tonight I have been taking pinches directly from the tins and keeping a toast in the snuff box.  I am finding the pinches from the tin easier to take, and more full in taste.  But I imagine continually opening a 25 gram tin will also dry out the snuff.  I am considering getting some plastic smash boxes or a metal snuff box. I guess I should have listened to advice here about wooden snuff boxes but really wanted to have a triple tech.

Snuff boxes are only good at keeping snuff fresh for around half a day or a day maximum becuase they are not airtight and you are continually opening them, and wooden ones do tend to drink the moisture away. A metal box will be slightly better but not by a massive margin as they almost always leak at some point in the closure. The very best of them will still only keep a snuff as well as a Toque tin for the simple fact of frequent opening. Large snuff boxes are the most effective as a greater volume of snuff will retain more moisture. Snuff boxes are beautiful and, imho, are 50% of the pleasure but for all that, a smash box and the bulk kept in an airtight jar perform better. Just less stylishly.

I now just keep toast in my wooden snuffbox.

Yes, toasts and scotches last in my PC boxes for well over three days if it ever comes to that.

Definitely. Snuffboxes are made more for taking snuff out with you for a day. I use them when I go to school or work.

I hear those smash boxes do a real good job, im gonna get a couple

Greengrass be steady, OK.

I’m curious as well, what is a smashbox?

Yes, I also think the smashboxes are doing a very good job to keep snuff fresh on the go. I use them for every day and my PC Tripletech for special occasions.

Out of all the containers for snuff I have, smash boxes can keep snuff freshest.  I’d venture to say that they can even keep snuff fresh for a year if you don’t open them.  I once dumped Poschl’s Replay Virginia snuff in two smash boxes just to use the container for other snuff, and a year or so later, I wanted to use the smash box for something else.  When I looked at it, I wasn’t sure of what it was because I didn’t expect to see such a healthy color on the snuff.  So, like any insane snuffer would do, I went ahead to find out what the snuff was in the smash box. I was pleasantly surprised that it was Replay Virginia and was in a state as if I’d bought it the day before.  Although this sort of snuffing isn’t suggested, I was staggered at the freshness to say the least.  As unrealistic as this sounds, it’s a true story.  Although, it may have something to do with Poschl’s oily, waxy nature that helped to retain its original properties.

Smash boxes are kind of the equivalent of the old papier mache boxes beloved by snuffers of yesteryear. They were plain black and nothing fancy, great little things.

I love the smash boxes very practical if not very pretty. I don’t understand why they are called smashboxes. Frankly I think it sounds stupid, but then again a lot things sound stupid when you don’t understand they whys.

I think because you “smash” them closed.

I think it’s because you smash them into a little plastic heap with your foot after you keep bumping the lid and catapulting snuff all over your damn desk.

Just a guess though.

I have preached the effectiveness of smashboxes on more than one occasion, fresh snuff for years. The ones on snuffgear.com are the best, very dense plastic and very god seal. Mr.Snuffs are also good, but are of inferior plastic. I’ve had a moist snuff in one for 1yr plus and upon revist, was as fresh as when it arrived at my door.

I like elegant glitz sterling silver snuff and pill boxes and I am worth it. I carry a half dozen in a leather sheep skin tobacco/pipe combo pouch along with my weapon , a stainless snuff spoon. Earth folks look at me sideways when I break it out and shovel heaping spoonfuls up my snout then I pack one of my Peterson and puff away.

You can easily hydrate snuff with hot breath just before closing the lid.as for storage;upon opening a tin or package I store the contents in a cobalt blue jars I also used wire bale jars in the past and some stock ageing well.all new stock in my horde goes in the blue jars I use a hair dryer to remove labels off tins and paste them on the jars http://www.freundcontainer.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_4232B07_A_cn_E_148

.I concur with Dogwalla but he was lucky enough to have a damn desk mine was lost to the breeze.

@basement shaman Good man. I think silver boxes are the way to go along with PC boxes. Us moderns need to remind ourselves of the niceties of days gone by and with these boxes I am reminded constantly throughout the day. Nothing better than a good snuff before lighting up the briar.

@Pot Poe       Your absolutely right when you say that smash boxes can keep snuff fresh for even years.  Tom at the ol’ Nicotinerush.com gave me a free sample about two years ago of some type of floral snuff in a smash box, and I just valiantly tried it not too long after I posted my last comment on this thread, and I was simply astonished (not to mention relieved I didn’t die from snuff poisoning).  Three cheers for smash boxes!

@Furious     Preach on Furious, preach on!

Smash boxes are a real pain if you use the boxcar method (thumbnail.) I’ll stick with my wooden slide top snuff boxes and new/recycled tap boxes.
