Hey folks, wanna re-launch the idea of using a thread for some free chat. Hope that is ok - if not, admin please delete it. Here we go !! I enjoy a mild evening and in the nose is Samuel Gawith´s “Sam´s Own”, which i really like for the supreme fine taste of the menthol in combination with the tobacco they used.It is mild, light and very easy to take thus it delivers a fine sensation to someone´s nostrils Anyone use this too ?
Nobody on ??
hi
hey there! how are you ?
Prismaster Hi. I like the SGs snuffs, which are a basic with me now. But I don’t really go for menthol. Perhaps SG menthol would be more to my taste. Spent my Lunch with a mate and a couple of pints. Snuffed freely and enjoyed not having to go out for a bowl. Since starting on snuff I’m drinking gallons of tea. Before this I drank coffee for years Odd change of taste. What’s your favourite non menthol?
Mh… that is quite hard to answer. I guess i can only pinpoint to a group of snuffs i use more then others at the moment.
The mentoined Sam´s Own is use daily atm, so do i with Railroad Mills Plain. SG´s Black Coffee, Scotch Black or London Brown are all to my liking but you cant use them constantly - at least, i cant. Do you like any of these three ? What about scotch snuff ??
JH Wilson SP No1 , F&T HDT, W.E.GARRETT&SONS Dry Snuff, Bernard´s Brasil Freso and Perlesreuter Schmalzer are all in heavy rotation this days.
I’ve been trying the English snuffs for a couple of months. Tried a lot. But the only non-UK snuffs I’ve tried are Taxi, NTSU and Grunt. What shmaltzer or American scotch would you recommend? (I like the London Brown you mention but it takes a bit of keeping up)
Friday afternoon chat here!
I love the idea of a chat room, not so sure about in the topic line, snuffster will let you know. Hey anybody get a message today unsolicited from a brand new member offering a trade? Strange, never heard of him and I suspect a problem there.
I recently got a 25g tin of the Scotch Black and boy, its a really potent snuff, eh? In terms of flavor, I mean. I’ve read reviews of how people likened it to coal or tar and now I can see why. I don’t hate it so I think it’ll grow on me but I can’t see myself using it as a daily snuff any time soon.
@ Whalen, what was his user name. I approved a member today, but had some doubt. Gave him the benefit, because English wasn’t his first language.
Rich and strong, though interesting, a real can ruster I bet. I am still intrigued by the SP, quite different taste.
i enjoy Bernard´s Brasil Fresco atm - love it! the only disadvantage of this snuff, that it closes my nostrils after 2-3 pinches.
I’ve been ordering from mrsnuff and he has like every 10g tap dispenser of Sam Gawith but only about 10-15 of the 25g tins. I dont wanna order a dispenser because I fear it’ll just give me the wrong impression by being dried out. Whats the best place to order Sam Gawith snuffs ? Or can mrsnuff get other varieties of the 25g tins that are not listed on his site? I’m just curious. I got a dispenser of the Gawith Sea Breezes because it sounded good based on reviews, but upon first sniff it was like…overwhelmingly herbal, it smells like opening your grandma’s spice/herb cabinet or something, only much stronger. Is that normal?
I have had a wonderful time exploring the entire GH line, the tubs make aquiring them a no brainer, the only thing is the entire line seems to have an issue with a strong burn, a PH buffering side effect I think.
So you’ve had Sea Breezes? If so, did it seem overwhelmingly herbal to you?
sry double post
@petersuki i think you are totally right about the London Brown, it is hard to get it up and hold it but it is worth the effort imho. for american scotches, i use a lot of Railroad Mills Plain, TOPS Sweet, Red Seal, Maccaboy and W.E.GARRETT&SONS Sweet Snuff and own a few others. i would really really like to sample Levi Garret Snuff but i cant find it online anymore :-/ anyone has a idea ?
@Whalen i am happy that others like the idea of using this for some weekend conversation. as i said before, in case this idea isnt in balance with the forum politics, just delete it.
I have had quite a struggle over ordering Sea Breezes, and I have not ordered it, Xanders review moved it to the questionable list, and at one time I just ordered out of curiosity, but I am hyper frugal now, I have so much snuff around here that it makes me uneasy to look at all of it, TAD problem, but I am working on it!
@jbruckus damn, man - there is it!!! many thanks for the hint. now i have to solve the 2nd problem. i am not in the US. mh… let´s look if they can send this to me. i hope, i hope.
Where do you live? It looks like they do international shipping. I think they are located on a native american indian reservation in the western US.
I think that some real time snuff talk would be fantastic! A real exchange of takes on different snuff, but AS a realist I am afraid it would spin out of control quickly, It would have to be, at the least, a self imposed limit as far as topic creep. I would be happy talking snuff, not OT crap, of course some OT stuff is great.
@jbruckus what? they got THIS much diffrent kinds of leaf and plug chewing tobacco… *argh* i wish i could order from them.
@jbruckus in Germany
@Whalen i am with you here. let´s start !
anyone of you ever used snuff from Frederick Tranter ??
Yeah, here in the states we can lay our hands on endless amounts of chaw and smokeless.
I am a little hesitant as to whether this is sanctioned. But in for a penny! Ft snuffs are rather exotic to me.
I am a huge fan of smokeless tobacco in all it´s forms - so naturally i have some stock of dip and chew. Thanks the internet, again and again i meet nice people who are willing to help me getting some supply. Even if he is not online here and dont do snuff, thanks John for all your help! A real southern gentleman!
Yeah, i saw the FT´s at MrSnuffs for the first time a few days ago - meaning, i saw them - dont know how long MrSnuff has them in stock already.
@prismaster - check out their shipping section, it shows that they ship to western and eastern europe - and pretty much everywhere. Frederick Tranters toasts are definitely on my to-try list. Probably my next order, which won’t be for a while! I’m assuming they’ll be similar to Wilsons toasts, which I like a lot.
yeah i already saw it i will give them a try coming month, that is for sure. nice selection of tobacco products i am curious to obtain and to sample. Wilsons does awesome snuff. Like most of this english fellows. Imho. Of course, it depends on your taste what snuff you like and what not but nobody can deny the quality in this UK snuffs.
I actually only use SNUS chew and other smokeless are either to sweet or too strong.
I gave up dipping/chewing on new years, but man I really miss it sometimes. I get the occasional craving for some Copenhagen, Cope (smooth hickory, etc) and all the swedish snus I used to order from Northerner and I loved it. Since that stupid PACT law was passed, their prices nearly doubled and the assortment of snus is down to only a handful of choices, it just wasn’t worth it anymore…
i keep some stock at the fridge but i am a more moderate user. 1-2 dips a day and 1 leaf chew. that is enought oral tobacco for me. i love to use Ettan but the german goverment put so much taxes on it if you import, it is just to expensive. i have hope that the snus ban for Europe will be lifted the coming years. i have a huge interest in all the more obscure brands - at least, something like BLACK MARIA plug is obscure to me
I bought a stand alone chest freezer and filled it up with fire sale SNUS from distressed sellers just at the enactment of PACT. 4 hundred and fifty some odd cans. I am set, mostly Grov. I had a bunker of smoking tobacco too then had a heart attack and had to quit smoking. But my wife is set for years to come. My snuff collection is a hobby. I was fortunate to be quite comfortable with money, then had the loss of my company and a health crisis took the rest. So now I am leading a humble life. But its ok, it is the way we should live.
I live near an indian reservation that (if u don’t already know, are excluded from certain taxes on gasoline and tobacco) has many smoke shops, the one I frequent has some obscure chewing tobaccos, many of which I tried and liked. Before I stopped chewing, I was into the Days O’ Work plug, I’d recommend that one if you ever come across it.
Sorry to hear of the misfortunes, Whalen but you sound like you’re doing good now. You’re very lucky to have snagged all that snus while you did!! I need to get me a chest freezer one of these days…
Enough about that, Wilsons and Tranter and GH along with SG are some world class snuff and constitute the very peak of blending. I have had a blast exploring the Tranters. My problem is having the discipline to maintain the quality of the snuffs I have, it is time consuming, humidors, misting, ect.
I am real healthy now, I work out hard every other day, heart is strong, I will start another business somehow, I just have to avoid to much nicotine all at once. Of course due to snus I have a blood nicotine level higher than most, It is the inrush that is bothersome.
Mh… to be honest, i stock my snuffs in a dark place and that is it. Maybe i am intolerant but i just dont care. I want to enjoy my snuff, to explore new brands and types and to get knowledge about the history, the production and so on. Like you said, it is a hobby and i really loving it.
Snus gives a serious dose of nicotine, that is for sure.
@jbruckus i never had the Days O’ Work pluy but it is on my try-list and this is exactly the kind of stuff i was talking about
I know what you mean. I have mine double bagged in air tight zip-locks but only time will tell if its effective or not. I’ve only been snuffing for a lil’ over a year so I haven’t any real experience with long-term storage. I suppose I’ll learn more as I go.
I found that the correct low volume container is the key, I have had excellent results with my snuff. The real problem is cross contaminating from scent. I have to keep some very aromatic snuffs in quarantine.
Days O’ Work may be the only true plug tobacco I’ve used. It came in small squares, extremly compressed, to the point where I’d use a buck knife to cut a rectangular piece from the square for using. Once in the mouth and softened up a bit, it would take the crescent moon shape of the inside of your lower lip. Similar molasses type flavor as like…levi garret…or Red Man. One square would last a long time tho. Once i Cut a piece off, I’d stick it in an airtight tupperware so it wouldnt dry out too bad
@Prismaster - That is the thing here, the Days O’Work is stocked up at the grocery store in obscene quantites and are dirt cheap. Typically a 8 foot wide display of all kinds.
I don’t even bother to check them out, the irony is that here we want something from England.
Haven’t seem to have had any problem with cross contamination. Like I said, they’re double bagged in zip locks and in a dry, dark, cool environment. I think the best chance of them being contaminated, in my experience so far, is when they are mailed to you. They are tightly packed into a box and it takes over a week to get to me from the UK, so during that week is probably the best time for them to contaminate one another.
LoL @ Whalen , Yes I know what you mean. When it comes from overseas it just seems more mysterious and exotic and such. If it is easy to get, there is not as much pleasure in obtaining it…lol
Have to take my girl to bed, will be back later. Maybe others will join in until then. Later!!!
Where do you live, Whalen? goodnite Prismaster
Well it pays to keep a drum of Camphor and Mild in its own space. The roses all get put together though. I like to vacuum pack all my spare stock, it stops all losses in long term storage. When Wilsons had the 1/2 half price sale I loaded up on bulk, it was weeks before PACT and paranoia was running flat out. No body here was sure how things would play out, and I had just gone though the SCHIP leaf tobacco debacle.
I am in Sharpsburg Maryland, 500 feet from West Virginia, also known as the sticks, or the middle of no where. On a bend of the Potomac river over looking West Virginia, in a forest.
Doesn’t sound much different from me. I’m in the middle of the Adirondack mountains in nothern new york, 500 feet from Canada (lol not really, but very close to the border) Maybe you’ve heard of Lake Placid, New York? They’ve had the winter olympics there twice, but thats about all the place is known for. If we ever want to trade any snuffs, it shouldn’t take long to arrive by mail.
Been there it Nice! I roger the Indian reservation. I Have to get ready soon to go Bottle a beer and brew a porter. WE brewed a Belgian Blonde beer that turned out a lot stronger than we anticipated. We renamed it the Belgian Tranny since it has some Cojones! Cant wait to bottle age that one. Making a porter as well.
Yeah, actually I am into trading snuff since I cannot justify buying them all the time. I have enjoyed all my trades with the guys here. They are the best after all, this site is pretty special.
lol , the belgian tranny? Someday I hope to get into brewing my own. Seems to be real popular now. I also hav to get going but its been fun chatting with ya. Might be back later, Take care, man
Hey thanks, that was fun. I am going to have to cook an early dinner myself it seems. Later.
A grill, a bowl of 'rinds …and you folks.
Down by the ocean side enjoying life. Happy Friday everyone.
@Whalen I would love to enter such a shop myself in the first place. Damn, it is sooo far away from me. Sometimes, it just sucks. :-/
@Prismaster:you can order the Levi Garrett from Lil Brown but WE Garrett Scotch (not sweet) is the same thing. I’ve got loads of it here, ya wanna pinch? Here ya go…
@Prismaster- that shop is the grocery store. Smokeless, Chewing, and Scotch snuff tobacco is as common in the stores as anything. So common that I never buy them. I always look to see if there might be an exotic snuff, a Rooster or Levi, But there is always more Honey Bee, Tube Rose, WE Garrett than you could carry. West Virginia is a 7% tobacco tax state so a 5oz tub is just a little over eleven dollars, cheap. Its just so strange that I have no interest in them, I have a small can collection of American scotches, but no large cans at all, except for those I cannot find locally. There must be a hundred thousand cans of American scotch snuff within a fifty mile radius of here. There is usually about 75 pounds of chewing tobacco at any given time at the store. I know several people who chew, but the only person I ever saw who dipped snuff was my Granny, and we learned early on never to kiss granny on the lips!
we learned early on never to kiss granny on the lips! Now that is funny I don’t care what they say!
@Whalen damn nice! i am somehow a fan of rural north-america. i have somehow romantic feelings when i think about the open range and all the great nature and humans are only small and between all of this. i really like it. sadly i never were in the states myself yet but really hope to do that in the future.
Well, treasure the thought! I won’t spoil it for you with the realities!
@Whalen Thanks!
Honestly, i dont want this image to be spoiled - as i already know that this cant be reality in the sense i think about it. However, i have a night shift at the club now. Hang in there guys!
Ive never had plug =0 I never see it up here in BC.
Lol oops too far behind xD
XD this time it is saturday night , anyone ?
I’m here enjoying some Poschl Schmalzler Perlereuter edm
Hello everyone, I just woke up from a Saturday nap, I guess I’m making up for the sleep I missed during the week. As soon as I woke up I made a pris of Ettan then took a pinch of HDT. I love how the snuff hits quickly and the snus levels me out
And I love the feeling, right when you wake up and your hankering for vitamin N. That first pinch is great.
yeap need that nic hit 1st thing in the morning. edm
XD you are not alone, that is for sure. i am the same, my way from the bed to the bathroom leads me alongside my snuff collection and in the bathroom itself, a can of moist snuff is waiting for the pleasure in the tube - after that i can get me some coffee or a cold coke. if you start your day this right, how could it be wrong ??
i’m up edm
hello and good evening to everyone who might read this within the coming minutes. speak up
Hi Prismaster, not sure if you’re still here. Hope everything is good in Germany.
Greetings from Detroit! Windy and cold here, but the coffee’s hot and I’ve a loaded PC box of Dental Mild nearby…
Hey, hello both of you - i might a bit late but i wish you a nice weekend! Til next time!
anyone online righ now ? drop a line!
HEY HEY - i am drunk (just a little bit) and in a very good mood. Would really like to chat with some people. Is anyone up to it ? In case, drop a line. I will check all few minutes and we can use this as a chat (like we did in the past). All topics welcome. <3
Well, well, it is not Friday night - but who cares ? Anyone up to drop a few lines in ?
Will be back in approax 20 mins. with new beer XD
I don’t really have anything to say, but I’ll just say hello as Prismaster has made 5 posts in a row.
Nice!! Yeah, i was somehow desperate and bored to death. My fault.
@Sloth: anyway, thank you ]
No worries, so what’s the beer? I had a few pints of Ruddles at the pub earlier, and have a can of McEwans Export right now.
I’m drinking mountian dew. have to work tomarrow. ed.
@mustangii Mountain Dew is great !!! @Sloth had two bottles (0,5l) each of Bitburger Pils & Kraftbräu - first one is a worldwide know premium brand from Germany and maybe on of the best selling beers of today and Kraftbräu comes from a local house-brewery etablished in 1998 here in Trier - where i live and what is actually the oldest city in Germany -> i like ruins and old stuff, so i am just right over here XD
Any active pilots here? I’ll never forget the beer I had when I visited Germany. It was some of the best beer I’ve ever tasted. It doesn’t have that special zing to it tho when bought here in the states. Some of the pubs will offer some on tap which is much better but still not as good as it tastes in Germany IMO.
I saw not long ago where someone had marketed Pabst Blue Ribbon to the Chinese as an expensive American import beer. Talk about a human rights violation, that stuff is nothing but a foul-tasting laxative. I get so frustrated with Americans obsession’s for over-hopped beer cut with rice and corn to save money. I quit buying alcohol anyway. It messes with my stomach and turns me into Charlie Sheen with the meds I’m on.
@Spyro that sounds more then horrible :-/
It is horrible Prismaster, have you seen Charlie Sheen lately?
Not really. I dont follow celebs and stuff.
What about all the amazing British ales and in recent years some dam fine American ales too.
i second you @Micheltn and @theratroom , both of you are more then right – great beer nations you call
The UK does have some awesome ales too. A big creamy pint of Wexford’s or Boddington’s sounds nice. And since the micro-brew phase of the 90’s there have been some decent brews from the U.S. The botched attempt at prohibition ravaged most of the traditional brewers and forever changed the American concept of blue collar beer. Sam Adams is good when fresh from the tap. I prefer their Stock Ale but its hard to find since the Lager is their mainstay. Sadly, we lost a really great brewery in Texas a few years back. CELLIS offered a traditional Belgian style ale resembling a spicy Hoegarden. They packed up and went out of business. They used to make a deadly Grand Crux. I used to love Trappist ales. The yeast is very exotic and difficult to brew with. I learned the hard way not to get drunk on them tho, they have a psychoactive effect on me like Tequilla.
It’s all opinion taste is subjective. I personally HATE beer and can’t stand it.
I love beer, and in the '90s was quite the beer snob. My opinion is that all of the above countries produce some really outstanding beers and also some serious rubbish. I will go a bit farther and say Belgium makes the absolute best, (yes like the Trappist and other ones Sypro mentions) but they also make mass produced crap like Stella. So good stuff can be found most places, one just has to know what to look for. One thing I would like to add, is that Mexico is almost invariably overlooked as a great beer nation, but aside from the rubbish ones you see advertised on TV they make some great darker (almost Bocks) type brews. Not many countries outside of Europe and US/Canada can claim that.
@theratroom: Yes it is, and the best thing is that most Mexican restaurants in the US have it since they are usally distributed along with Corona, so if you go out for Mex food, you have something good to drink with it. I think Sierra Nevada has won a number of awards for that Pale Ale. Its pretty fantastic, but for India Pale Ale, you can’t beat Harpoon.
I have had Sierra Nevada Pale, in both bottle and from tap. Its good. Mexico does have some good beers too. In fact, most countries do. I recommend Michal Jackson’s “Beer Companion” as a general reference. Texas has a small brewery named Shiner. They make a decent Bock and some nice seasonal brews. I looked into getting my Brewmeister certification but the schools are pretty expensive. Ironically, I rarely drink alcoholic beverages these days. I miss some of the Japanese beers too. It was nice being able to get a beer from a vending machine 24/7 in Tokyo. Sure, they sell a lot of beers in the nicer stores here, but they just don’t seem to keep their best taste in a bottle that’s been sitting in the store room for a while. I have access to some great brews, they just cost a lot these days and I haven’t been to a pub in a few years. For me beer was a hobby and a taste fest. If you want to get drunk, just buy a bottle of Everclear and get on with it.
I <3 BEER As a german, i am more then blessed with hundreds of domestic beers and as i live near the border to the BeNeLux-states, i can get a lot of stuff from there too via Luxembourg. For a lover of good quality beer (who favours small, traditional firms), i am in the right place.
Just to make you guys and gals jealous I am at the moment drinking a pint if my home brewed pale ale.Made with centienial and cascade hops and yeast cultured from a bottle of sierra Nevada. Pretty good if I do say so myself. Goes very well with a pinch of stammheimer hopfen schnupf.
The sad thing is:- most tourist come over and drink in central London, and drink swill. I’m from the North, and do know the best spots to find a good pint down there. We have some good beer, but I do like Dutch Belgium & German beer too.
Technically all ale is beer, but all beer is not ale.
@theratroom congrats on your home-brew. i play with the idea of doing this for some time now and guess i will give it a try sooner or later. i could presume that it is a very joyful hobby. the stammheimer hopfen isnt joyful at all, at least not for me. i bought it one time and think i took 10 pinches from the tin at all. dont like it.
@prismaster brewing your own beer is very rewarding. I started with kits I don’t see any harm in that. there is some very good ones. Then I moved on to extract brewing for a while. Now I do full mash but I must say if I am feeling lazy I will still do a kit brew. The only thing is lager/pilsner is difficult as it needs to be brewed at low temperatures so a thermostat controlled fridge is needed. But ale be it British. German. Belgium or American are not to hard to achieve .I Hope you decide to give it a go. The stammheimer is a tough snuff to get on with it does have a tendency to hit the throat but once I got the technique down wow what a snuff Hoppy and citrus just like a witbier. I hope you decide to give it another try there are some snuffs I hated when I first tried them that I now love. Try it while drinking a glass of Weihenstephaner or Ayinger Bräu Weisse. Not witbier I know but still have a citrus note because of the lactic acid and in my opinion are way better than the big name wit that everyone knows. hoegaarden. Also I have been trying to find a seller of Kraftbräu here in the UK but sadly no luck.
http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/guide/london.shtml Just in case you find yourself in London town.
Now there’s a good topic. Which snuff/beverage combo do you prefer or recommend? For example, I like a stout cup of black coffee with my smokey scotches.
@theratroom do you mean Kraftbräu from Trier ? If yes, i can supply you - i live in Trier. (>.<)
@Spyro good that you like it !! @theratroom dont know about the stammheimer, dont think that it will grown on me, but i exactly know the effect you describe. i have more the one snuff which i disliked at beginning and now love.
My booze combinations are: Plain SP/Scotch HDT/Bourbon Menthol (especially Hedges L260) English Ale (why it should work escapes me but try it) Apricot/Vodka Rose/Gin Toque Quit/Cognac
I can see menthol going with an ale. I can also imagine Toque Quit going with just about anything.
@prismaster Yes it was the Kraftbräu from Trier as you recommend it earlier in this thread I bet shipping to the uk would be expensive. though I would like to try it. @snuffster menthol does work very well with ale. Rose goes amazingly well with pinky vodka it is a rose and violet favoured vodka.
Yeap beer is an aquired taste. I have a few now and then, but not a reguler drinker. I like Bourbon and Tequela, but not mixed. I also long island iced tea, but don’t realy know what are in them, lol. edm
I <3 Hedges L.260
Beck’s beer and Hedges L260 go down well together at this QTH.
Hedges and any beer really; there is just a magical union between Hedges and hops.
@mustangii long island iced tea is all the white spirits topped up with cola
Yes and I’m taking on more hops, then snuff, LOL!
I have to work this whole night at the bar and i guess i will take my can of Hedges with me --to enjoy it with some beer.
