Fribourg & Treyer Bureau and Patchouli reviews.

How about it, chaps?

I’m not qualified to write a review but I can say I was seriously and pleasantly surprised with the Patchouli. When I learned it had menthol in it I was really put off but I had to try it anyway because I’m such a patchouli fan. Damn! It’s great. The lovely strong patchouli scent is there in spades and the menthol is so muted that all it really does is enhance the patchouli. I can’t describe other components, but they’re there. It’s a great snuff in my opinion, though I won’t use it for an all-dayer because of its potency. Not the nic, which is nice, but the strong scent which might be overpowering in too frequent use. Just my opinion.

@ddavelarsen. - Thank you. In view of what you have said do you think it might make a good mixer or should well be left alone?

Hm, interesting question. Nothing occurs to me to mix it with offhand but I’m about to go run errands and I’m going to take some Patchouli with me. I’ll think about that for a while.

The Bureau is quite nice, very much like the Bordeaux, and it’s a cool name. The other kind of reminded me of Conwood’s Dental Scotch but in a better way. How’s that for a review? From now on, I’ll just give a thumbs up or down!

@hooked. Thank you for your input - a review is a review! Perhaps you might add if it impressed you as - for example - spicy or earthy or floral or any of the usual classifications?

Well, here’s the review of Bureau I just put on my site: “It has been said that this is one of the older Fribourg & Treyer recipes, listed as early as 1799, so it is particularly gratifying to see it resurrected by Wilson’s of Sharrow, who now produce all the Fribourg & Treyer snuffs. Wilson’s say that it is a blend of six different snuff and going by the flavour I am certainly not going to contradict that claim. The result is a mid-brown medium snuff, subtle and complex in it’s flavourings and very satisfying in the nose. I do not find the flavouring as overpowering as that in some other F&T snuffs, the blend being gently floral with a hint of sweetness and spice, not unlike F&T’s Dr J.R. Justice mixture but lacking the longevity in the nose of the latter. As such it makes for a better all day snuff in my opinion, whereas I tend to restrict my use of the Dr J.R. Justice to the evening (if I am in the mood for it). As for actually identifying all the flavourings that go into this sort, I fear my nose isn’t up to the task. Suffice to say that I would recommend this snuff to anyone.”

Wow, sounds like I might include Bureau in my next order. You make it sound like just what I’ve been looking for. Thanks for the great review @ermtony.

My pleasure!

I’m going to be doing a video review for both of these F&T’s very soon

Sounds divine

What sounds divine? The snuff…or MikeMoose on video?! =)

Received my Patchouli and Bureau today and here is what I have to say. First, the Patchouli is very similar to the incense or perfume, but also has a musky/peaty smell to it that actually reminded me of 5 Photo’s Himalaya. The color is a rich brown, medium grind with a medium moisture. I only noticed a small bit of nose burn and no drip. Nicotine level seems to be medium as well. I wouldn’t suggest it as an all day snuff only because it is so strong in flavor but fantastic none the less. On a side note someone mentioned menthol in this snuff but I did not detect any as of yet. Secondly, the Bureau is very much a Fribourg & Treyer snuff. As soon as you get a whiff of it it will remind you of Bordeaux, Morlaix, Seville, Macouba, French Carrotte, and Morocco (possibly the ingredients?) Anyway, the combined concoction is something similar to the aforementioned, but like all of F&T’s snuffs, a distinct individual. The color is medium brown with a medium grind and moisture but not as moist as the Patchouli. It does however deliver quite a burn to the nostrils but also a more heady nicotine buzz. Being a fan of floral snuffs I could see myself using this through out the day as it does not seem to cloy. However, the burn is quite an eye opener when your just trying to relax. All in all, great snuffs and I’m glad Wilson’s of Sharrow decided to add them to the line.

Nice reviews @giaach!

I love how many F&T snuffs are impossible to discribe acurately. Or how many have what sounds like almost the same ingredients.

I’ve got Bureau and some Radford on order from Snuffstore. I should have them tomorrow. I didn’t fancy the Patchouli although I might get it at a later date. I’ll let you know my impression of Bureau when it gets here. Stefan

Excellent reviews, chaps. I have not much to add to them, except to say that I am enjoying the Patchouli a lot more than I ever thought I would, and I’m not overly fond of it as a ‘perfume’.

The patchouli has a nostalgic effect on me; reminds me of the early 70s with real fondness. Took a pinch just now in remembrance…

I hate the early 70’s mostly cause I wasn’t alive untill the late 70’s.

I received my tin of Bureau today and I am quite impressed. It is a sweet/floral snuff which is quite piquant in flavouring and not very cloying. It reminds me of F&T Morlaix. All in all a good snuff. Now for WoS to revive a latakia F&T and I’ll be a very happy bunny. Stefan
