Frederick Tranter has anyone tried these

My adventure with snuff continues and i am now totally skint till next month but my final order for this month contains the following snuffs a couple of these have been reviewed and the rest have not. So if anyone can tell me abit about them i would like to hear your thoughts. Cotswold Snuff Irish High Toast Snuff #20 Light Toast Snuff #22 Hobson’s Choice Snuff Strawberry Snuff 29 Special Snuff

As far as I know all the Tranter’s snuffs are made by Wilson’s of Sharrow but the names aren’t always the same. I would expect the #20 and the #22 to be the same as the Wilson’s IHT No 20 and No 22. Likewise with the Strawberry. From the descriptions on the Tranter’s site it looks like Cotswold is one of the SPs, but I don’t know about the other two. I’ll be interested to hear your opinion of them.

@ ermtony - Thanks thats good news as i could not get hold of any Wilsons Strawberry which is why i ended up ordering the Strawberry here, the Hobsons choice description is as follows (Texture - Moist Grinding - Fine Color - Brown Flavouring - Mint/Menthol/Camphor) ordered this one as i could not get the Wilsons Camphor & Mild which i wanted to try. I have absolutely no idea about the 29 Special and chose this one as a sort of wildcard. I will post some reviews of these when i have spent some time with them.

The irish high dry toast #20 is great. It has a nice hint of lime. Though the grind is quite a bit coarser than the typical toast. Really great unique snuff, I wish it were more widely available.

I think the #22 is supposed to be radically different. Check snuffreviews if Trout doesn’t check in on this thread.

This gets more interesting, so these aren’t just Wilsons with different packaging they are unique recipes hmm, can’t wait to try them. The pricing on these is quite reasonable as well £2.75 for 1oz with flat rate £2.00 shipping. Also they had the best price on the Wisons snuffbox i wanted at £14.95. Very different from the G.Smith & Sons snuff which comes out at £5.50 per 1oz, as much as i wanted to try these the poor reviews and high price definately put the kybosh on that one

Country Doctor is one of my favourite snuffs as Farley said it is aniseed and eucalyptus well worth a try. Also their Finisterre is a really nice snuff, it is geranium flavoured I got that in the swap that Farley was talking about that is also really good. Stefan

Snuffson, there are generic names used by other snuff companies that are not brand specific like Jockey Club. GH & SG has a Jockey Club. Also names that says the flavor or type like aniseed, vanilla, menthol, wallflower, strawberry, kendal brown, irish toast etc. Tranters does have some snuffs that are the same as Wilsons but they also have their own that are Tranter specific. Big Al, there are some G Smiths worth trying but they are made by Samuel Gawith. If you want to save money but are looking to try the Cafe Royale, give SG Black Coffee a try. Also the Tranters Regency is another worth trying, its a very good SP type. And the #20 is excellent

I can see I’m going to have to put in an order with Tranter’s myself! I’m curious about the £2 flat rate shipping as the only reference to P&P I could find on their site quoted a flat rate of £3.50 for orders under £150.00 (and free beyond that). £3.50 would make it a bit pricey ordering just a couple of tins!

Tony, maybe consider doing a group buy a la FarleyFlavors? I would be in a few large tins of #20 based on Trout’s review. Also wouldn’t mind having a large tin of their rose flavor.

Besides aren’t you guys close enough to drive to all these places??? Isn’t England a wee island and aren’t you lucky to be right in the heart of snuff country and how odd that you prefer mail ordering rather than visiting these shops and mills!

Er… no! From here in Hull, Bath is 240 miles away, Oxford is 200 miles and Cambridge is 140 miles (about a 6 hour round trip, not including breaks). And you also have to consider the cost of petrol here. While it’ not as expensive now as it was a year ago we’re still talking 90p per litre. Several times what it costs in the US. It just wouldn’t be sensible to to drive that far for a few tins of snuff. The Royal Mail is the way to go. A group buy might well be a good idea. Let me ponder on that one.

Gee whiz, If I were only 240 miles from those places I’d just hop in the old Learjet and I’d…

@ ermtony - not sure what it actually says on the website just know that at the checkout it was £2.00 First Class post which is really good comparative to other online stores.

Thanks Al. At £2 a pop for the P&P I think I’ll find it hard to resist!
