Frank Muir may be remembered by some of the slightly older British snuffers here. Famous for his upper-class lisp, flamboyant bow ties and inveterate snuff taking, he was a well-known raconteur, comedy writer and made frequent appearances on television shows like Call My Bluff, where his gold snuffbox and polka-dot handkerchief were always on hand. This picture should rekindle memories of Call My Bluff. Here he is at the Edinburgh Festival in 1978 doing what snuffers remember him best for.
R.I.P.
I remember seeing Frank giving a demonstration on how to take snuff on Nationwide when I was very young in the 70’s, the article was extolling the virtues of snuff taking as a healthy alternative to smoking. How times have changed.
Yes, he endorsed the snuff campaign and appeared in several printed adverts for J&H Wilsons - taking the opportunity to also market his own book (The Frank Muir Book: An Irreverent Companion to Social History) with the words: “As Omar Khayyam almost said: A glass of wine, a pinch or two of snuff, the Frank Muir book … ‘tis paradise enough.” Frank Muir, Chancellor Schmidt and Dr. James Robertson Justice were, as far as memory serves, the only people who regularly took snuff in front of cameras. After Call My Bluff ended in 1988 Frank Muir and his snuffbox seemed to disappear into oblivion. Next I heard of him were the obituaries ten years later.
Remember him well from call my bluff as well as his snuff box and polka dot. Am I right in saying he wrote for the Goons as well?
No mention of the Goons on the Wikipedia page, but he did write for TW3 and the Frost Report.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Muir
