For you guys with ball mills

What container do you use to mill the tobacco? The rubber one it came with will not stop affecting the smell of the flour. Imparts that rubber smell, really firmly to the tobacco. I tried different pill bottles but it needs to be real wide and real short for the milling principle to work, and I’m not finding anything that works nearly so good. Or has anyone found a way to purge the rubber of its scent? I’ve tried washing many times, baking soda, liners etc

The rubber container does give a rubbery odor to the tobacco, but in my experience that fades if you air the tobacco out for a few hours, then jar it for a couple months. I think Chef Daniel’s been using one of the rubber rock tumbler type mills, and his creations don’t smell like rubber. My sense is that time is a factor. The rubber smell is strongest when you first bring it out of the mill. I’ve got a lot of snuffs that were tumbled in the rubber chambers, and the smell disappeared fairly soon.

Oh, and the rubber smell will not go away from the containers themselves, or if they do, not for a very long time. The mere friction of the milling balls will keep it alive. The milling process not only pulverizes the tobacco, but molecule by molecule wears down the interior of the chambers. One may safely conclude, that you might not want to share your snuff with anybody you know who has a latex allergy…

I think freshly made snuff should sit in a glass jar for at least a few months and it takes less than two weeks for the rubber smell to fade off. None of the snuffs I have made have a rubber smell but they did when I first jarred them up. There are metal ball mills but they are ridiculously loud. It also helps if you don’t let the machine run too hot. I like to unplug it and let it cool down every few hours.

OK, yeah I have a couple jars sitting around, one not capped, one capped, and another that was dumped into a clean t shirt sack, it’s been maybe a month on the first one, but thanks you guys for letting me know it’ll eventually release the scent.

I’ve thought about the latex thing in the past, maybe I should find the metal tumbler, I can always run it in the garage.
