I like this FOJ very much, I mean my two favourite snuffs out of all I have tried I think are down to this and No.22 toast. Now No.22 is about £6 for 50g and FOJ is almost £30 at the moment. So FOJ is bit out of my league to buy more (although I probably will anyhow). I could at least get a couple of 15g’s but I was wondering, is there anything else out there remotely like FOJ at more of the No.22 price? Something else with a nice subtle berry scent and good tobacco base? Not very hopeful but maybe all the knowledge here combined will have some suggestions.
No clue really. I’ve not had the pleasure of trying any of the SWS snuffs. But can help you find a juniper flavor. I don’t know how close they will come. Actually there are not as many as there once were. Start with Sam G. Ma’s Ruin and Gin and Tonic. Also Dholakia does a Gin & Tonic. The best G&T was Bespoke, now defunct sadly.

Thanks Xander I’m a bit shocked that you say you have not tried any SWS. You really have to try this FOJ, although there is nothing like Gin I don’t think in there or no chemical or unpleasant additional aromas. It’s just a wonderful peppery rich but mild berry scent straight from the off. I love it before bed and then have the best sleep. Even just smelling it in the tin is great every time. I like something stronger and more floral with a little menthol to wake up in the morning and toast for tobacco during the day but otherwise this FOJ is pretty much perfect for all else. I also love how it works in a bullet because it never sticks, leaks or clogs and seems to actually work better if you haven’t touched it first as when pinching so a spoon is another good option. I love to take it with me when going out as it really doesn’t mess up your nose with dripping or dark stains. The base tobacco is also just superb. It is priced as it is for good reason. I would love to be able to afford to buy it in bulk. I’ve still got a lof of my 50g tin to go. I looked at ordering 2 more today but at $84 I decided I need to think a little more about it. Maybe just stick with using my toast mainly and spread the FOJ out but if I don’t get an alternative then it’s either do without or pay up.
youll have to try blending, i find it reminds me a little of firedrac with berries and juniper (no chilli), think thats the base though.

If I could blend an FOJ I would be a happy camper. Anyone got the recipe? Strange I do also think there is something about the cherry in the FIredrac that is a little similar in some slight way. Based on that I ordered SG Cherry but it’s to chemical. Cherryade toilet product. I actually blended some Mull of Oa into a little and it’s not bad. I just tried some again. Defintiely improved it. Smokey Cherry now and it has sort of gained a slight hint of FOJ but the cherry is to sickly sweet. Needs something else. Maybe a little FOJ. Might try that although the goal is to use something else! Something to reduce the sweetness but still nice tobacco preferably a medium grind. Maybe Wos Sandalwood?
try using cherry and a juniper snuff, maybe see if you can find something of the grind you are after thats pretty plain to mix with the cherry to tone it down. if you can find a way to bulk out actual FoJ i guess its a start. i like GH cherry… theres 2 GH snuffs i like (not tried many) and they are sea breezes and cherry (my first snuff). not sure how close it is to SG cherry or FoJ though.
Thirty quid for 50g!?!? You can’t tell me that’s not daylight robbery. I expect 450g for that. My boycott of ‘connoisseur’ snuffs will continue.
Ok to my Mul of Oa / SG Cherry I have added 2 things. I had a sniff around my collection and Grand Cairo seemed to be best suited to add to make a nice snuff but in aiming for FOJ it actually seemed that my Dragun Menthol was the best choice so I tried that and it’s not bad so I added some Sandalwood and honestly I did get some reminder of FOJ when I tried that. I’m closer but now I’m getting a lot of smokiness from the Oa so need to blend this out some. Plus all these flavours will need a day or so to settle down in the blend but it’s now not a million miles away. Tried adding a little Grand Cairo but that is the wrong direction although not by much. Tried some firedrac and that also did not work. So I would say the SG Cherry / Dragun Menthol / and Sandalwood are the closest so far from what I have. Could leave the Oa out which saves cost and gets rid of the smokyness although that’s quite nice. Think I’ll add those 3 to the blend as I use it up and see how that goes but I do think now that a similar to FOJ blend could be arrived at with the right economy ingredients.
Try about 1/3 Ma’s Ruin mixed into your #22
Thanks Mouse. Need to get this Ma’s Ruin.
Maybe thats why the Dragun Menthol seems to work. Didn’t try the Dragun as I thought it was to almondy but maybe I should. Don’t have any GH Almond unfortunately. Off to check on the Dragun. Could be the answer. We’re close. Team work. We can do it! Actualy I really am getting a bit of fake FOJ from this blend as it is. There is synthesized FOJ in there. Real FOJ I never use in blends. One of the few snuffs.
Ok then, all that blending didn’t work. Definitely in the failure pile on this occasion. Missing one basic ingredient that being any kind of overall deliciousness. I have managed to order a couple of the G&T’s that @Xander mentioned. SG and Dolakia amongst some other lovely (hopefully) new experiences and the usual pile of toasts and more coffee’s to try and all (12 mostly 25g) for not much more than the cost of one 50g FOJ. Be very interesting to see how the G&T’s compare to the FOJ.
I would like to add something like, why try to make champagne out of beer? If you like champagne buy champagne, if you can’t afford champagne get another income to supplement your refined palate. I have not purchased FOJ .Just because Juniper is not my thing. This SWS worked hard to bring you fine people the fruits of his labor,And you want to stop supporting his efforts by mixing?; and by some wave of the wand you have something you don’t enjoy as much. Why settle for close enough? Life is too damn short to do without the snuff you love. You could die tomorrow! Live each day as if it was your last.

I see you subscribe to short termism. It’s great snuff but life and death, no not that good, almost! I don’t actually like champagne thank goodness and don’t normally have expensive taste but I take your point and I certianly am amazed by the efforts of SWS. Unfortunatley perhaps for my cash flow SWS did it a bit to well. When possible I will continue to support SWS and probably all snuff makers and I have no objection to increased income as I am sure many would not were it possible, world recession and all that. ahem… you didn’t try it? supporting SWS etc. Ah, I see, you are certain you won’t like it, not worth a small trial? not even for the massive collection? Seriously though this is one snuff I highly recommend everyone to try at least a small tin. Unless you absolutely detest Juniper that is but I really do think this is a snuff that everyone would/could love no matter whether a fan of gin. Not trying this is missing out. :-? I recomend everyone to earn more money and buy all SWS and push the price up even more! Go nuts!!!
its a combination of ridiculous pricing from the manufacturer and ridiculous pricing and mark ups from mrsnuff i wont support. ill come back to SWS if theres another purchasing channel available or the price is more reasonable.
The price is probably largely down to it being a limited manufacture run snuff with a lot of time and care put into it and then there is certainly also a wonderful quality aspect. One slight downside I would say with FOJ is that freshness is paramount. It will go off it’s best fairly quickly if aired. MrSnuff are not a charity and they work out what they can sell it for but I’m sure they do realise that there is a lot of good competition out there selling plenty of good snuff at keen prices and for this reason I do order were I see the best deal for what I want. I do hope a good proportion of any profit reaches SWS so that they are encouraged to continue. They could no doubt make more happy customers with greater production and reduced cost to the consumer. I suppose once they get their products developed they could outsource the production to a big producer hopefully while retaining as much of the originals which might help open them up to more people. Anyway, FOJ is one I would always choose.
I scimp and save to afford the more expensive snuff.just think of all the crap people buy and waste money.that way you can afford the higher quality snuff.easy when you think about it.
Just tried Dolakia Blast Gin and Tonic and immediate impression is very similar to Dragun with Gin flavour. Straight after tried SG G&T and immediate impression was a lot of lime or citrus and a bit chemical. So nothing whatsoever like FOJ. Vastly inferior to FOJ. Really a world apart. If FOJ is Juniper I don’t detect any at all in the others at present. Think I’ll start saving for my next SWS order if there is any left.
Practising what I preach. A little more FOJ on the way plus more new tries. Gotta love credit cards. Had to have some more. It’s “essence of beauty” in a tin. Forget Gin, this snuff has nothing to do with gin snuffs which are horrible. Think beautiful thoughts, that believe it or not is FOJ. I was trying for a while to work out what it was and that’s what came to me. Now who doesn’t want to try that?
