For those that have, does TSA ever say anything when you go through security?

M

I took a whole bunch on my carry-on, on my person and a plethora in our checked-bag (we were taking some to a Pipe Show in Chicago) and the only acknowledgement I received was a note in our checked bag informing us that it had been inspected.  I would recommend you keep at least some in it’s original packaging for explanatory purposes, just in case.

a old thread …  http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/3192/snuffs-on-a-plane

M

Never heard a word about a tin on my person, but my Tupperware of cigars was inspected once.

S

Have not had any problems carrying or using snuff or snus while flying A few times TSA did inspect my bags for other issues and seen my snuff tins and smash boxes and asked what it was Just would tell them that I quit smoking cigarettes and this is tobacco that I sniff

P

As soon as i learn to fly i will let you know. I imagine it will be quite windy, probably just go everywhere.

A

Never had a problem. An officer once asked what it was and after I explained she asked where to get it as she was trying to quit cigarettes. The fear people have is that it will be mistaken for some kind of illegal substance, but with the scanning technology for field testing for both explosives and illegal drugs it doesn’t really matter what they think these days because it will never fail the tests, unless you’ve mixed a gram or two of C4 or coke in it. Most just recognise it as tobacco without any further ado in my experience. I always put my snuff box/supply in the belt and valuables carton that goes through the x-ray machine - since I started doing that I’ve not had a single question.

F

I flew to Destin, Florida for mothers day and had no trouble carrying it on with me.  I too put it in the belt/valuables bin like Snuffster, and was asked what it was.

Last year my younger daughter flew from the UK to New Zealand and back with stops one way at Bangkok and Sydney and the other way at Sydney and Singapore. She took some of my snuff with her (SG KG and F&T HDT) to keep the ciggie urge at bay. No problems anywhere and total success re the cravings!

M

No problems in Oz flying with Qantas. Tis great.

P

Now we know the secret ingredient in Abraxas- Radiation!

B

maybe it’s just me but if you’re flying with snuff you’ve taken too much.

E

I fly quite a lot with snuff and at first expected to get questions about it, especially when crossing borders.  Nothing so far, and as Snuffster pointed out, they have ways of figuring out what’s what now.

V

I never had a problem, but i was certainly worried the whole time

A

It’s all urban myth/hype behind people thinking anything not clearly labeled will be taken as drugs or explosives by airport staff, anyway. It does not matter what they think your brown powder is because they will test it at the time. There’s no further to do. It’s not like the 70’s or before, pre-technology. I got a random search last year and they used a couple of different scanning tests (non-invasively) and I was gone. Looking like heroin is not a problem. There’s some mileage in them stereotyping because if you look like a biker you will be treated as one, but not much they can do to harm you where there are laws and lawyers.

M

Speaking of which. Does anyone know how much snuff I could bring from the US to, let’s say, Great Britain, Denmark, Germany, The Baltic States,The Netherlands etc?

A

Good luck with finding an answer; I doubt you could find an official that knew.

S

If you’re going to Great Britain, Germany, etc. wouldn’t it be easier to just buy your snuff there?

B

nope not really.

M

I would assume the easiest of those would be in Great Britain, but I’m speculating. Maybe just to bring a handful of 10g tins and see how many they take away…I’d have to plan ahead and hit a tobacconist shortly after arrival I 'spose…

P

I would think that any officials at an airport with international flights would have likely encountered someone carrying snuff tins before they spent more than a few months on the job.  I’m sure they’ve found much stranger things in passenger baggage and pockets.

I’ve only traveled by air once since I started snuffing, and had not a single question from any of the TSA staff.  I had quite a few snuff tins, too, as I visited a tobacconist and stocked up during the trip.

I must say, it’s a tremendous relief not to have to suffer nicotine withdrawal in airports/airplanes anymore!

@Mr O I looked for an answer and spoke to an ex HMRC colleague. Tobacco import is restricted because of duty due to paid on the product when bought in from non Eu Countries.Eu internal imports are subject to a personal use allowance, this is a subjective quantity. So from a legal standpoint as there is no Tobacco Duty on Snuff in the UK this should be a free limit import, however you may be subject to a VAT tax on any quantities you bring in.To be fair he suggested unless the quantities exceed 1 Kg 2lbs and this is subdivided into tins and baggies you should have no problem. This is stop wholesale import quantities being brought in and avoiding VAT.Having said all this You can get all your Snuff posted from several reputable on line sellers ( Mr Snuff) for a reasonable postage charge to the UK.( we don’t pay import duty on orders just VAT)
I can not get an answer in regard to the Duty position on imports Ex Us to other Eu and non Eu countries.

Hope this helps

M

Wingcamnut- thank’s! That’s some good info to work with! In any case my travels (if they happen) would be more than a few months out, so I’ve got time to think this through…
