Heading to the mountains early in the morning to get after some trout. Any of you who fish, do you have favorite snuffs for fishing? I’m trying to decide on what to take…

B

SG Wild duck. Probably better for duck hunting but i take it each time i go down to the river. Havent learnt to fly fish but a bit of regular fishing is fun.

I’ve got a bottle of Quit in my tackle box. Never tryed fly fishing though, it seems like cheating to me. Stare into the water until you see a fish then dangle a lure right in its face, that’s just cheap.

If you’re going fishing in the mountains, take along some 6 Photo Kailash. Named after Mount Kailash in Tibet.

thanks guys, had a great time. Not exactly like you described @n9inchnails at least not when I’m doing it. Caught a nice Rainbow and a very nice (for me) Brown, took Viking Dark today.

Good to hear your fishing went well. Natural tobacco and outdoor activity just seem to go together hand in hand.

I like to blend a little Molen’s Latakia and A/P with a healthy pinch of Bernard Fitchtennadel when fishing for a nice pine forrest with a campfire at the distance scent that compliments the actual pine forests. Also a coffee snuff like SG’s or Café 11 is nice in cooler weather esp if I’m standing the water in waders Dragun and/or a whiskey scent might also work for this application.

Good choice with the viking dark, I would had loaded up with taxi red for the slow nicotine intake . I find it a hassle to snuff while wading. found some water tight containers perfect for snuff while near water. http://www.ebay.com/itm/390604651692?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&\\_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

thanks for the input @Ifan and @basement_shaman! For me the Viking Dark is the fall back position so I was happy with it. I’ll check out the containers! I have some WoS Irish Coffee on the way as well as some Viking Brown - so I’ll have to try them next time

I was going through some tackle wondering about this very issue, so I checked to see if there was a thread - and lo and behold, here it is… so might I submit that it rather depends on what kind of fly fishing we are talking about? There’s a world of difference between fishing 1. a Scottish Salmon river; 2. a Southern English chalk-stream (dry fly only, of course…); 3. a Midlands reservoir for stocked Rainbows; or 4. Tropical Bonefish flats, among other possibilities. My suggestions would be: 1. Scottish Salmon Standing in a freezing Sutherland or Aberdeenshire river trying to spey-cast in a Force 8 - you need warming up, assuming your frozen fingers can open your snuff-box without spilling the contents: Toque Whisky and Honey; SG Firedance (brandy, blackberry and vanilla). 2. Chalk-stream dry-fly Gin-clear waters and skittish wild Brownies refusing to feed on anything except one obscure species of gnat… you need stealth, caution and subtlety: SG Wild Duck (already mentioned in this thread, a superb snuff which is the same as original G. Smith’s Garden Mint) SG Gin & Tonic 3. Reservoir Rainbows You need something reliable - a no-nonsense snuff to keep you going through grey afternoons flogging away with a sinking line at a featureless patch of reservoir: SG Kendal Brown, or time to break out your favourite Toast. 4. Flats fishing for Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon Shallow turquoise water, casting to individual fish in balmy weather - the main problem is going to be staying alert… but hey, it’s a holiday: SG Elmo’s Reserve (tonka beans from the Guyanas, vanilla from Madagascar - the Tropics in a tin) SG Guarana (if you need the extra focus). Or what the heck, just take the lot every time… there’s a lot of room in those tackle bags. Oh, and one other thing, in case it isn’t obvious: keep a sealed waterproof reserve stash somewhere on dry land every time you venture onto, or into, or even near, any water…

thanks Hapax, for a well thought out reply! My fly fishing is pretty much limited to mountain trout at present. So far I think the Viking Dark is my favorite for just about everything, but I’ll have to try some of your suggestions as well.

N

I’ve never given it much thought but I think I would have Mull of Oa and Cafe 11 with me while chucking #12 bead head prince nymphs at hatchery rainbows. Great thread! Glad to see so many snuffers that enjoy standing in a river waving a stick!

I Am going grouse hunting. Any good snuffs for that?

C

@jpsavage - it has to be SG Grousemoor and not just for the name. it is a good snuff for the countryside.
