first try with a snuff spoon

E

WHOAH! So my wonderful wooden snuffbox came with a snuff spoon included. I’ve never used a spoon before, just a snorter tube (read: dollar bill), my fingers, and the back of my hand. Thinking it would be no big deal, I spooned up a nice hit of O&G and took the faintest whiff, which immediately disappeared into my nose in a way that no pinch or bump ever could. The result was literally eye-watering with the blast of menthol and nicotine to boot. I can’t imagine what Hedges would have done to me, but I’d probably still be sneezing. These things should come with warning labels.

C

I find I like to use a spoon with the moist tobacco-forward snuffs. My spoon of choice is a Brigham’s pipe tool, which has a tiny spoon on one end. Not so fond of using it with scotches or medicated snuffs.

S

I find myself too careless, when using spoon for finer stuff. I use spoon with schmalzlers and moist, grob snuffs. They are messy and hard to pinch otherwise.

@cpmcdill‌, like this one?

I

My first ever snuffing experience was with Wilsons dynamite off a spoon. It burned a lot. Might have cried maybe a little. Second snuff I tried was redbull from a bullet. I think I may have an addiction to hurting myself.

B

I pinch for aroma I spoon for effect and black snuffs, Large box cars of fine snuff for control. I use the stainless steel spoon that looks like a dental instrument

Yes, that’s the one.

When I feel the need to use a spoon, I usually just take some of the tip of the spoon included with every generic Czech pipe tool.

M

Haha, this reminds me of that friend of mine we convinced to take a sniff of Dholakia White. He took it from the lid, as he used to do with his regular O&G. I’ve never seen an expression of pain so truthful: tears soon flooded his eyes and his face turned so red that I thought some capillaries would burst. He then started rocking up and down like possessed for a couple of minutes, muttering threats with what little was left from his voice. Taking account from this empirical basis, I never use my spoon (a regular Czech pipe tool) for fine snuffs, but the menthol sting from a spoonful of Hedges could be funny if you’re in for a ride.

V

@El_presidente‌ Having read your initial post combined with my inexperience and willingness to try new methods of snuff taking, I decided to attempt this spoon method. Holy s***! I thought I was sniffing gently!

E

Got a second snuff spoon from Mr. Snuff and I have to say it’s fantastic for dry snuffs. If I was trying to pinch (or God forbid, boxcar) HDT it’d be everywhere but in my nose just about.

I

Reminds me of some one posting that they used the spoon to shovel snuff into there nose while there head was tilted all the way back. It was a slight disaster. Little bit too much.

Salt spoons - This one looks nice http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RYNMKO/ref=olp\\_product\\_details?ie=UTF8&me=

E

@basement_shaman that’s a good price, too. I paid $8 for a gold-plated one from Mr. Snuff (the only kind they had… it is pretty nice though).

B

@El_presidente you forgot to look on page two https://mrsnuff.com/index.php?cPath=22\\_169&sort=2a&page=2 I have the gold plated one also have the stainless steel [more than twice the capacity] . I use my pipe knife while out and about. I wanted a quality made one. http://www.peterheinrichs.de/accessoires/pfeifen-zubehoer/pfeifenstopfer/diverse/2859-pfeifenstopfer-delphin-holz-491/101.html?c=344

E

Well don’t I feel dumb.

M

I also use my Czech Pipe Tool’s spoon for snuffing, but for a while now I’ve had a dedicated Czech Pipe Tool that’s been used for nothing other than decanting snuff into other containers or scooping some onto the back of my hand for pinching. I thought about using the blunt screwdriver/file attachment on my Victorinox SA SD keychain knife but when I took it from the box it had noticeable knife oil on the hinges that I don’t want residue from in my nose (or in my snuff), although, I think I read that proper Victorinox SA knife oil is food-grade so I guess it would be fine. @basement_shaman‌ that’s a very nice pipe knife/pipe tool. It’s got a pocket knife shape to the handle which I like and the handle itself looks to be of high quality. Salt spoon is a good idea also @El_presidente‌ to be on topic, yes, my first experience snuffing directly from a spoon was just the same. It was an American Scotch I believe, and it shot up there all at once and my eyes were watering and I was coughing, wasn’t very pleasurable. It gets easier if you practice but I still pinch most of the time, unless my hands are dirty.

B

@md363 not to hijack the thread. Yes I have several pipe knifes this one was well engineered, the blades are as tight as new, very ergonomic designed ,I use it heavily .The others I have look nice but the blades have got sloppy play, And I think I paid more for them, funds I could had spent on tobacco.

J

@basement_shaman that was a great idea with the pipe knife. I just tried it with some Black Magic. It works great!

H

I prefer not to use a spoon. It’s just something else to lose or break. Besides… it looks so undignified!

E

@howdydave I dunno, it’s growing on me. I’ve had a few spoonfuls at work today and enjoyed it quite a bit. A nice change from pinching or snuffing off the back of my hand.

V

I wouldn’t say it’s that undignified, especially considering other alternatives such as tubes. I still prefer to pinch over any other method, however I did try the aptly named ‘plugging’ method found on the forum with great success but just found it a little messy. I have decided to give the spoon another try tomorrow now!

J

I have been using my pipe knife today. I like it a lot. pinching is not as easy. With the knife I get the exact amount and I am not losing any on the floor. Pinching is messy but hey I am a rookie.

E

@J_S I’m neither a rookie nor an expert, but I’m not wild about pinching if I can avoid it. There’s a lot to be said for alternative methods.

I have that spoon, it’s huge! I use it for transfering snuffs to others containers.

B

@SnuffSniffer Maybe I should get one ,I like huge amounts

@basement_shamen Here’s a shot for size comparison…

B

@SnuffSniffer Thanks, fine dry snuffs can’t get a large enough mound with the Stainless steel one, so I mostly boxcar them. I don’t think I need to a dedicated spoon. My consumption is already out of bounds.

N

There used to be a link on here somewhere for a website that sold sterling silver salt spoons but now I can’t find it. I think @bob posted it and there was some really nice ones and they were moderately priced.

B

it was called looking in the attic and their spoons are nice…

I rarely use a snuff spoon straight to my nose. Normally I use them to scoop from the tin and then dump it on the back of my hand then pinch it. The only one I use in the normal fashion is the little ones that come with the PC Tripletechs, they are a perfect size for a single sniff.

M

I’ve pinched and I’ve used the back of my hand, but there is something about using a spoon that I just like better, personally.  This pipe nail from Brebbia cost $1 at my local tobacco store.  I carries well in my pocket, and with a little practice I’ve gotten fairly fast at loading the spoon with just the right amount of dry snuff.
