My long awaited order of Swisher Square finally arrived in Jakarta. Before I got it, I’d heard about how Scotches were 1) hard to use because they were so fine and dry; 2) loaded with nicotine. As a fan of toasts and other strong, fine, dry snuffs, I was curious as to how I’d go with it. I don’t think it’s that difficult to take if you’re generally used to dry fine snuff. But I do think it’s pretty strong – I’d say it’s some of the strongest snuff I’ve had, equal to some of the Indians, like Dholakia Sparrow and NB Madras, and probably quite a bit stronger than an English toast like HDT. I say “probably” because it’s probably partly because the flavour is so strong and robust, which often fools you into thinking the nicotine level is higher, too. Bit like the way a very smooth brandy might not seem to have the same kick as a rough pouring brand, but then kicks you later. Even so, no denying that the Swisher is strong stuff. The taste reminds me of the taste of a cigarette like Lucky Strike or Camel no-filter, in a good way. It’s pretty basic, probably pure Burley, although I’m not that much of an expert in picking tobacco varieties. If I lived in an area where you could get this at the local store, I’d be a happy man. It’s a good, honest product that delivers what it says. I’m just a bit surprised that the Scotches don’t get a little bit more love and attention on this forum. A few people mention them, but usually something like “all I can get around where I live is …” Now I don’t think it would replace HDT in my top favourite list, but I’m still surprised that there aren’t a few more committed enthusiasts around. I gotta say, I really like the packaging. Seems like one of those classic American products, just like Lucky Strike or Camel. I’ll have to keep some around for July 4 or Thanksgiving Day or something like that. I’ve always said if you like English toasts, you should try some of the fine, dry Indians, just to see their take on that sort of thing. Now I’ll add that you should try a Scotch to see how the Americans do it.

How come they are so pricey, though? Seems to cost almost double what a good English toast costs.

They’re not that expensive in the states so I dunno. They are really good, a bit one-dimensional though. Really nice at first but after a few weeks you might get a little bored. Square is one of my favorites.

Love the American Scotches - Have over thirty of them!

I can get that can local for less that $5 US

Scotches sold on Mr.Snuff are costly because he has to pay taxes on the shipment when it comes in and that extra cost gets passed down to us, Mr.Snuff wouldn’t exist if he didn’t turn a profit.

S

Square is my favorite Scotch.

J

For anyone in the UK the price is also inflated by the fact that whereas most of Mr S.'s stock is dispatched to us from Northern Ireland, the Scotches are dispatched from the US. Two 1.15oz cans generally cost me about £25 which is insanely expensive from a US point of view, but bearing in mind that the same money here would buy me roughly 60 cigarettes it’s actually not an unreasonable price for something that would otherwise be unobtainable.

@Justin, I agree that in the greater scheme of things, it’s not ridiculously expensive. However, it just seems like such a basic, simple, down-to-earth product - no disrespect - that I kind of feel it should be cheap and readily available, preferably near the cash register of every convenience store.

I’ve been hitting this stuff hard. Ruins you for other snuff. Viking Dark and HDT are practically tasteless if you had the Square earlier.

S

It’s tobacco gold, though @JakartaBoy‌ you can always rinse your nose out, lol

S

Scotchy, scotch scotch … It’s mmm mmm snuffing goodness.

I don’t know why I joined this place. I was so happy. Now I’m constantly looking for the next thing.

Is their glass under neath the label? My dad would buy the Tops Mild I believe for my grandmother. It came in a glass jar way back when and you could re-use the glass for your favourite beverage when the snuff was all gone.

I have not seen the glass Scotch Snuff jars in forever, but do remember them from when i was little, too. These days I buy this brand of mustard from my local grocery, simply for the glass, haha. I have a good collection of them so far. 8.5 oz or so - perfect for heavy gravity home-brew or giving juice to the kids. Alstertor Dusseldorf Mustard - World Market

I dragged these 2 dusty bottles out of my collection… unfortunately they’re plasic, not glass.
