first snuff and bloody nose

I entered the world of snuff 3 days again and i must say i absolutely love it. I have smoked for 4 years and my girlfriend HATES it. She is a bit more accepting of snuff since she cant smell it when i get home and she really doesn’t see me doing it. Anyways the first day i used, i used snuff about 4 times the first day, and 6 or 7 the second day. (after every couple uses i cleaned out my nose by blowing and wiping it out with a kleenex) The third day i literally had no snot in either nostril and it was dry as a bone. I had only taken 1 pinch in each nostril in the morning and later that night i had a bloody nose that was just pouring down my face. I would like to avoid using a neti-pot since i cant stand liquid in my nose. Is there a nose spray anyone could recommend to keep my nose moist? doesn’t have to be medicated or anything, just something that will keep it moist to avoid nosebleeds. Thanks in advance for your help.

i suppose a small perfume atomiser would do the trick? failing that a cup of boiling hot water, and sniff the steam every so often?

There is the simple saline nose sprays.

I’ve never had this problem when my nose has been bone dry. I had a bloody nose once and that was from blowing too hard. Maybe that is what you’ve been doing? The nose takes a little while to get used to it. I’ve noticed where I used to be really conjested as well now it isn’t so bad. Don’t get me wrong, I have days where it is bad but for the most it’s lesser. Maybe your nose just needs to get used to it?

I bought from Wal-Mart a nasal rinse called “Simply Saline” and it seems to work well.

As far as sprays go, just go something saline, couple bucks at whatever store you go to. You could probably also make some yourself if you like, and are into that sort of thing. I know all about nose bleeds…they put a damper in snuffing…though mine was corrected through a procedure that cauterized veins in my nose, and haven’t had one since. If your nosebleeds get sever, you might check a nose/throat doctor, but yours don’t sound as sever as mine were. Good Luck!

I recently started snuffing after having put it down for years and it seems to have aggravated two things which are inter-related. The top cause of nosebleeds in all comers is nose-picking. This may or not be you. But I have found out that snuff has really activated the need! That said, I like to get the snuff out as well to avoid smelling like it. I will blow my nostrils out in the sink 15-20 minutes after having snuffed. The first blow I will “snuff” gently some running water out of my clasped hands, then blow hard. I then start inhaling the water deeper and deeper on each successive blow/rinse to get the last bits out that are deeper and deeper. Inhaling too hard too soon makes you swallow the snuff and water. It seems to work. Using iso-tonic water is better because it won’t make your nose swell as much, but I am lazy and it’s not technically *BAD* to get some free (solute-less) water in there. Are you using scotches a lot? These tend to dry you out. Try using a coarser, moister snuff. NTSU is the ne plus ultra of moist, coarse snuffs and my personal favorite of all time, but it’s strong to do all the time as it will ratchet up your tolerance to the point where you don’t enjoy anything else and get VERY addicted! IT also, with heavy use, makes your nose blocked up the next morning no matter how meticulously you try to clean it out.

The kleenex is probably the biggest problem. Paper is much harder on the nose than cloth, and you don’t have to get it all out. Noses are self cleaning to a great extent. Blow, but don’t scrape it out. If you want a good cleaning either irrigate with a rubber bulb like the ones that come in an ear cleaning kit or use a Neti Pot. I use the rubber bulb and luke warm water. I irrigate while blocking the other nostril and blowing out of the one I am cleaning. I wouldn’t do it more than once a day, preferably at night.

Man I don’t follow any of that advice. The only snuffs that make my nose bleed is dean swift sp and anything cinnamon.

I lost about a quart of blood from a nosebleed today, and I hadn’t taken a pinch for over 12 hours. Seriously, I had just got done running and was in the shower, and it started squirting blood and wouldn’t stop for about 15 minutes. I’ve done about a gram of snuff tonite with no problems. Whatever you do, DON’T put any kind of moisturizing lotion in your nose; seriously, it can kill you. I’m addicted to Afrin, and the nose bleeds are caused by swelling nasal mucosa, so the Afrin makes them stop for me. It will make them stop for you too, but if you use it for more than a few weeks you won’t be able to breathe without it. Use saline spray to moisturize your nose, and stay away from snuffs that have their alkalinity boosted to enhance nicotine absorption. The most drying snuffs in my experience are American Scotches, and heavily mentholated ones if you use them too profusely. At this time of year, a nosebleed might have nothing to do with snuff. I’ve been getting these horrific nosebleeds for decades.

thank you all for your replies. The last few days i’ve been using snuff with no problems what-so-ever, so that may have just been my nose not being used to using it. And for those who asked about what type of snuff i use, not sure if its a scotch, but i have poschl gawith apricot, and ozona raspberry, orange, and spearmint. (which all 4 are mentholated :frowning: ). Sadly right now i can’t order any offline because my girlfriend still isnt quite accepting of the habit so i have to stick with what i can get at the local shop.

“Sadly right now i can’t order any offline because my girlfriend still isnt quite accepting of the habit so i have to stick with what i can get at the local shop.” Sounds like me and my girlfriend when I first started taking snuff. The first couple of months I had to come up with ever increasingly outlandish excuses for ordering more snuff until eventually she came round to the idea that it was going to be a monthly event lol. My ultimate justification is that I used to smoke tobacco at £11 per pouch totalling £44 a month and now I’m placing moderate sized orders for £15-20 a month and I don’t have to buy rolling papers, filters or lighters. She seems quite happy with that.

Actually, I would just wait to see if things settle down, its early days and your nose is just getting used to things.Avoid nasal sprays with decongestant as they will makes things worse in the end.

i plan on avoiding decongestant… i just want something that will keep things good and moist, such as the saline spray that was mentioned.

You might find that the odd pinch of menthol moistens the nose, it has that effect on a lot of people.

in addition to whats been said here the one thing I see missing is: Make sure you are drinking enough fluids (yep thats what I said)… most people are dehydrated to one degree or another (by the time you actually feel thirsty thats your body actually going “hey stupid! we’re really drying out here!” and you’re already way too dehydrated. besides all the extremal stuff being mentioned here, make sure your body has the internal stuff, the juice, to give to your nose when necessary. I don’t get anywhere near the 8 glasses of anything a day we’re supposed to either, but I try and make an effort (if I don’t my lips break apart I get headaches, my skin gets sunken in, I’m really prone due to other issues to being easily dehydrated so I work on this, Gatorade is also your friend it helps reset your electrolytes), and instaed of standing over a steaming pot of water, why not make a pot of ramen noodle soup and kill two birds with one stone? also there’s a vitamin in orange peels that helps stop nose bleeds (escapes me now just what it is but I recall my father eating the inside white parts of orange peels when we were kids as a cheap and logical waste-not-want-not way to slow his nose bleeds, he didn’t sniff, just didn’t deal well with dry heat in winter). if you can find which vitamin that is that’s in orange peels (and don’t feel like eating orange peels) buy it in a bottle and take one daily. It might have been a b vitamin but I really don’t know now. also to the guy who had a nose bleed explosion in the shower (and anybody else)… watch that, that sounds kind of scary… just for peace of mind get your blood pressures checked to make sure that’s not any part of things.

You are right, but one interesting thing about the ‘8 glasses’ amount. I read an article where the researcher tried to find the source of that advice; after speaking to doctors, lecturers, academics and the like she could not pin down where it had actually come from or any original research that states we should be taking in 8 glasses.

Eight glasses of water! How big should the glasses be? I hardly ever drink water alone, it’s usually in the form of coffee or a cooldrink. I eat a lot of fruit which mainly consist of water and that’s about it. The only time when I drink pure water is when I’m out, riding my bike. I won’t advise anybody to clean his/her nose with anything else but water. To stick a rolled up tissue up your nose, is looking for trouble. I never do that, neither do I do any “farming” in my nose. Our noses were designed to get rid of anything it does not want up there by itself.

alright alright just ‘more water than most of us are getting’ then (you guys seem to be getting stuck on the minutae here) – I doubt most of us get even anywhere near 4 glasses, and thats 8 ounce glasses btw – of *anything* that’s not actually *dehydrating* like colas teas and coffee – into us a day just to make sure part of what I just said gets pointed out: caffeinated beverages actually work *against* you, they dehydrate you *more* (they are like diuretics or whatever, they make you pee out more of what you had to start with right with them) the point: most people really are one degree or another of dehydrated and most of us don’t even know it – so drink MORE healthy liquids, plain water is best but clear juices and in a pinch a sports/replacing drink like Gatorade is good too and don’t forget the orange peel vitamin idea (some people just have thinner membranes that are much closer to the surface and this can help) and especially anybody having massive nose bleeds that really don’t sound like they have anything to do with snuffing – *especially* after 12 hours abstaining and being even while in the shower (which would be even less likely a place for an irritated nose to start bleeding) and *most" especially one like that that came after vigorous exorcise – that’s scary stuff, I have a bad feeling about that one especially – that could be a sign of something serious, possibly even a dangerous problem in a person’s brain causing that, so please get a checkup if you’re having stuff like that. if you ever get really dark (not bright like it usually is) blood as part of a nose bleed also consider that a real warning sign (because bright blood comes from your nose nearer to your outside but really dark blood comes from somewhere deep inside)

No, I get your points and agree with them, I just thought it funny no one could find where 8 glasses came from is all.
