So I just got my first order from Mr. Snuff last Friday and I’ve spent the weekend with each of the four I ordered. Keeping in mind that I’m kinda “new” to snuff I might be missing some of the finer points here but I thought I would give a review of sorts for the snuffs that I ordered. So here’s my two cents for what it’s worth! Wilson and Sharrow, Coffee Cream - At first I wasn’t really too happy with this one. I really wanted it to be a strong “coffee” taste but what I’m finding is that it’s more like a mild coffee aftertaste. It’s easy enough to take without much burning or anything and you can take a healthy sniff of it without much problem. But it really takes a while to get around to the coffee flavor. I would say it’s more like chocolate milk flavored than coffee. I have found however that if you have a strong cup of black coffee with this in your nose it does complement the flavor of both the snuff and the coffee. I have to give this one 3/5. It’s not bad but it’s not at all what I had hoped for. Samuel Gawith, Vanilla - I’m getting all the bad stuff out of the way first. Like the Coffee Cream I was really looking forward to this one too. Maybe it’s just me but I’m not getting much vanilla here at all. It’s more like a flavored cigar smell and that flavor isn’t vanilla. Again it’s not a bad but I just don’t get vanilla at all from this one. I was really looking forward to this one being something to have with coffee in the evening but I’m not sure how much more time I will spend with this one. 2/5 for not tasting anything like vanilla. Samuel Gawith, Elmo Reserve - For those of you that told me this was a good snuff. I want to say… You were 100% correct! There is so much going on with this one that I can’t even begin to explain it. It’s like a mixture of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, pipe tobacco, cedar smoked awesomeness. I spent the better part of Sunday and Monday morning enjoying this one almost non-stop. It’s got a little bit of a “tingle” on the front end but smooths out nicely and leaves a great aroma in your nose for at least 30 minutes after a sniff. This one is 5/5 all the way! Getting more of this in the next order. Bernard, Brasil Doppelt Fermentiert - I have to admit that when I ordered this snuff I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I was totally going by the packaging because I thought the illustration on the front of the box was cool. (Yup that was the entire basis of my choice.) So I wasn’t really expecting anything from this one. Then I took my first sniff… To say I was blown away is probably an understatement. I actually said “holy shit” loud enough that my wife asked what was wrong from the other room. Again I’m pretty new to snuff but so far this one is the mountain top! It’s hard to put my finger on what this one but it tastes like… maybe warm coco or expresso with a hint of nuts or maybe the smell of chocolate cake baking. It has a sweetness to it that isn’t sickly sweet by any means. I have to admit that as soon as I had a little of this in my nose I was going back for more and more and even more. I’m just upset that you can only get this in 10g tins because I have to say this is one I would be ordering in bulk. Since trying this I have loaded up my shopping cart with more offerings from Bernards because now I have to try even more! 5/5 all the way on this one.
Of the above I’ve only had the Brasil, I like it also. You should try their Klostermischung as well. To me they’re not too far apart.
I’ve got it in my cart already. Unfortunately it’s On Order at the moment so I’m holding off on my next order until I see that it’s available again. There are a few others from Bernard that I’m going to try. Having never tried a schmalzler before this I didn’t know what to expect. Now that I know I’m going to give my nose a tour of Germany There are even a few menthol’s that Bernard’s offers that I’m going to give a try!
I love the Bernard’s offering ,but they are seasonal for me. I enjoy them best in the cooler weather. Yes some snuff are a let down. reading description are not always correct and sometime reviews are even totally wrong. And one persons prefect snuff is another’s worst ever. I found most fruit snuffs disappointing… Never trash a snuff unless it has gone spoiled. Taste change and a weak snuff can always be re-scented. Get a fresh vanilla bean and put it in the Sg snuff and let it sit a few days.
@SnuffnStuff Thanks for the reviews - it is always good to get the opinion of others - particularly those who like myself are fairly new to snuff. I have been toying with the idea of schmalzer so I think I will add some to my next order and also the Elmo’s Reserve which I have also read good things about. If you want a real coffee taste then check out the Abraxas Cafe 11 - to my nose that is coffee snuff perfection.
What @Mr_O said. Klostermischung is all that with added rum cake to me. Let me also add that with the last three years of scotches, toasts and menthols, Bernards is now my favorite snuff maker.
I didn’t have the slightest idea what a schmalzer was before this… I was completely surprised when I tried it because it’s so much “smoother” than I ever expected. Cafe 11 is in my next order so I will let you know what I make of that as well. But I’ve heard that it’s great! Reviews are helpful but I agree that sometimes they can be misleading. I read a few for Elmo’s Reserve and maybe my senses aren’t as refined as others but I honestly don’t get some of the flavors people were saying they got out of it. It’s good but I couldn’t taste half of the stuff people said they did.
@SnuffnStuff, for real coffee flavor there is nothing at all that comes even close to SG Black Coffee. Abraxas Cafe 11 is AWESOME and definitely is coffee, but more of a top shelf coffee liquor. To me the Schmalzers taste of figs and raisins… These fruits I enjoy, or have available in my house more in the winter, so I Think I too am like @basement_shaman in saying I enjoy ‘seasonally’.
Great reviews. I absolutely love Doppelt Fermentiert and Elmo’s Reserve… So tasty. I enjoy Schmalzlers most in the evenings and Elmo’s on rainy days. You might also try Pöschl Doppelaroma… Its like shoving the richest moistest chocolate cake (with nutty/fruity note) in your nose.
Give the SG Vanilla some time. Yes, the vanilla scent is faint and it its coarse, and smells a bit like an old pipe ghosted with vanilla… But it is quite strong and packs a punch, and goes very well with your second or third drink. Id say to use all the others first, then hit the SG Vanilla a second time.
