I’ve been waiting to try Equinox but don’t know if I can hold out for 6:?something; been a Rat Bastard kind of day though, what with the frozen ground and impending snow showers.
My medlar tree is springing into leaf, apple blossom and cherry blossom soon to appear, got the summer bulbs planted out today, and one of last years skyscraper lily bulbs has already broke the surface. Most of the other fruit trees/bushes are budding up nicely too. Sticking with fruits, herbs and flowers this year. Veg take more nurturing than I tend to have the time for. The only exceptions are dahlias, Queensland arrowroot, Jerusalum artichokes, Chinese artichokes, and daylillies which all offer a “vegetable” element.
I’ll have to wait to sow my onion sets. Need to get some nitrogen fertilizer and till in the pony manure yet ,way too soggy now. I also need new flowering bulbs to plant and this time I am using plenty of ground hot pepper, damn squirrels had a feast while I wasn’t looking. X(
AR is soggy to the point where the ground is rotten right now, which is fine because I usually wait till April 15th (tax day) to plant anything. Cold weather plants don’t do very well here anyways because we go from cold to hot rather quickly. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, corn, okra, cucumbers, what else do you need?
I am not Iranian, but its Noruz(sp?), or Persian New Year too! Their celebration of this holiday stems from the ancient pre-Islamic religion of Zoroastrianism. I just thought I’d add a little anthropological tidbit for those who might possibly find that interesting. How do I know this fascinating factoid, you may be asking yourself? Well, many, many years ago, when I was young and good looking, I was in love with a Persian girl. She taught me many things about her culture, and that was one of them I’ve never forgotten. She would water wheat seeds days before the date arrived, so they would be sprouts, green and growing from the dish. Then she would buy a goldfish and put it in a little jar of water, then on the day of Noruz, she’d put hardboiled eggs, the fish in the jar, the dish with the sprouted wheat, and perhaps some things I can’t recall, all on a table with a white tablecloth. It was followed by a strange ceremony, the details of which I cannot recall. But the gist of it was an ancient rite, celebrating earth, fire, water, renewal, the essence of spring. I just thought I’d share that with all my fellow snuff lovers. Perhaps there are some Persian snuffsters…I don’t know about that. Maybe…

I failed completely with onions :-S not sure if growing in containers was the problem, but that’s my only option. These days the only alium I grow (if it even is one) is ramsons. I have three dedicated troughs just for these. Leaves make for some fine pesto, and flowers taste nice too (though some need to be allowed to go to seed). Not been growing them long enough to start harvesting bulbs yet.
