Finally! An end to the coughing fits!

D

As I’ve stated on a few threads before, I’ve had a problem with Toque Quit flying into my lungs.  I haven’t had a problem with most other snuffs, even toasts, but Toques, and the worst offender was Quit, would fly right into my lungs and give me a massive coughing fit.  I tried nose scrunching, facial contortions, spoons, bullets, taking it off my hand, sniffing after taking a breath, and nothing worked.  Stuffing work ok, but it’s not really the way I like to take snuff, it just seems awkward.  So I’ve had 100g of snuff sitting around in a container wasting space and making me regret having ordered it.  But tonight, I finally figured out my method for taking the stuff with absolutely no lung issues in any way, even from a bullet.  Here is what I do:

  • Grab a pinch or get a dose in your bullet.
  • Close the nostril that isn’t sniffing.
  • Hold your breath.
  • Put the snuff up to your nose and create a seal so just a bit of air an get through.
  • Open your jaw without parting your lips and it will just suck the snuff right up in there.

Since you’re holding your breath it can’t go into the lungs.  At first I had a tendency to get it in a throat a bit too much, but after a couple minutes of practice I had the snuff going exactly where I wanted it to.  I haven’t even had it go up into my sinuses once.  It has made all of my harder to take snuffs easy as pie.

I have looked all over the board to see if this technique has been discussed and I couldn’t find anything.  if it’s already out there, I apologize and will hang my head in search-failure shame.  I’m just so damn happy that I can use my Quit now, which has been sealed well enough to still have that lovely ammonia reek to it.

This is a similar method to my dropping of the Adam’s apple for a quick vacuum.

D

I hadn’t read that method, but yeah, the adam’s apple drops when I do it.  I wish I had found your technique many months ago.

J

Im glad you found something that works.  However I have no idea what you are describing.  Im not gifted I guess.

S

Good explanation.

I’m going to try it with White Elephant.

You know if you learn to pinch all this stuffing and what have you is redundant, it really is the way to take snuff. Just take the pinch and insert your fingers a few mills into the nostril and then just sharply, but without taking a great sniff, breathe it in. You have to place it just within the nostril.

E

Just tried that snuffster, works wonders! Would you use the same method for fine dry snuffs? Hdt I can take no issues at all but rooster and cheetah I really struggle without a cough

B

@eraserhead78 yes but you have go alittle lighter on the snif.

E

Certainly seems to help with the toque grinds. As soon as my nose isn’t full of toque chocolate I’ll give it a try, cheers bob

B

great name by the way Eraserhead, look at my knees.

E

Probably my favourite film, certainly one that changed the way I view film as a whole. It’s like watching a really messed up dream.

D

I can still pinch an sniff with varied amounts of pressure on most snuffs and I’m fine, but there are a few that really cause me problems.  I have a really messed up nose (multiple breaks) so my right nostril can most stuff through way too easy, while my left nostril stops ever snuff exactly where it is supposed to be.  I’m nasally handicapped on the right side.

E

Just had a very successful pinch of 6 photo cheetah using the above method, cheers guys!

@Dogwalla Thanks this is working perfectly for me.

Spread the word…

Been trying this method out for a couple of days now.  So glad you posted it as I can now take the Toque snuffs a whole lot easier.  I find if I tilt my head back a bit it helps a bit also.  Great technique, thank you for sharing.

M

Is this the same as a throat pop? That’s what I call it when doing toasts and fine snuff.

I’m not familiar with that technique, but just the name makes me think that it could be the same thing.  Now that I’m well practiced with it, I find myself always using it.  One easy to take snuffs i still get the same result as sniffing, but it just seems more natural to me now.

For some reason I find good sport in trying to take toasts with a sniffer.  Finding that balance between a perfect sniff and hurting yourself can provide me with hours of fun.  I’m a bit special like that.

T

With toasts there is an element of ‘pleasure, pain’

J

I dont get the pain anymore… I want that sinus searing OMG this is good pain.

A

I would call it all of the above as the Single Modifiable Pinch Technique. Yowzer!!!

D

I guess I could have explained it a little bit easier, huh?  Here are my new instructions:  Snuff just like you always do, just don’t use your lungs.  No lung usage = no snuff in the lungs.  You can still get stuff high or in the back of the throat if you aren’t careful, it just takes the lungs out of the equation, and I feel it makes it easier to get the elusive quick but gentile sniff that is needed.

Tip: If you play a wood/brass instrument, it is done by quickly changing your embouchure.  If you haven’t played an instrument like that, ignore the tip entirely.

A

If you did that and combined it with inserting a large pinch (3 or 4 times your usual) a few mlls inside, or up, the nose before making that short, sharp but gentle - or shallow - insufflation.

For those new to the site; usually a bigger pinch reduces the burn, sneeze etc. Don’t try with toasts until you are very happy with your technique.

Wow this forum is educational and fun too

S

I purchased WoS Irish toast #22 and Toque W&H. First time with this powdery fine snuff and pretty much all if it ended in my lungs! Just tried this method and job done…great tip. I will spend the evening enjoying my new buys…awesome.

E

Tried this with Dholakia White and got some on the roof of my mouth. Otherwise, it seems to work!

I been getting a tickle like I have phlegm around Adam’s apple area kinda paranoid if I’m getting it into my lungs little by little. I hope it’s just in my throat. Not my lungs. I guess I would be feeling pain and coughing a lot. Just have that tiny buildup phlegm feeling on throat. Feels like I need to get somthing up. Hope it’s a cold

H

Tried it and love it.

Thanks

A

Nice I’m gonna try that as well tonight

A

I’ll probably be laughed at here lol but I’m just digging the schmalzlers better. I actually prefer the coarser moister snuffs probably a bit of paranoid about finer stuff reaching lungs but I still use the finer snuffs anyway. But reach for the Old Mills and the Shmalzlers more and old mill snuffs his grinds are very easy to use as well. Do youz agree on the ease of use of old mills grinds?

S

Something that I do is… if I can describe it…

So to get the idea, you pinch both of your nostrils together, and then try to keep them stuck together after letting go.  This takes some suctioning that can be done without the use of the lungs.  I think I feel the effort coming from the throat region, so I guess it’s similar to the dropping of the adam’s apple/jaw.  It’s also similar to the throat pop I think, but “popping” the throat get it too far up for me.  Plug up one nostril and try to use that suctioning method to get snuff up the open nostril.  With practice, it can be done without plugging up a nostril. It doesn’t seem to matter whether your lungs are full of air or emptied.  I don’t know if that description makes sense, but that’s how I take anything finer/drier that Toques - and some Toques for that matter.
