I’m on day 4 of a 4 week challenge to not buy a SINGLE tobacco product. My cigs ran out the first day, I only have RYO left (and not much of it), 2 tins of Mac Baren pipe tobacco, six tins of Skoal SNUS, and the rest is snuff. That means, by the end of the 4 weeks, if I pace myself, I should be much more used to not having the cigs at all, and having snuff as my major source of N. If I don’t pace myself, the pipe and SNUS will be gone, and snuff will be my only resource. I have plenty of snuff to last, but I want to see if this helps me make the transition. It should also help me clean out a bunch of small batches of various tobaccos I need to finish up.
TAD Anonymous.
Good luck! I had a serious case of it when I started snuffing but it has come under control with time. Now I just hoard 50% of the worlds supply of Grand Cairo instead of 75%
Please, someone tell me what TAD is, I see it all over this forum and have no idea what you are referring to.

D isorder
@cstokes4 - Ah…something I am familiar with. Thanks!
Why fight it (other than for financial reasons). Sometimes a mental disorder is a good thing! (but buy bulk!!!)
That’s kind of my sentiment too. Who has enough snuff to bury themself alive? I’f I ever build/ design my own house, I’ll need a snuff/pipe/cigar room/library with a walk in humidor and lostsa shelves for pipes and snuffs.
LOL @thorgrimnr it’s okay to be in denial
@cstokes4 hahahaha…I’ll start quoting the lyrics to my wife when i win the challenge and reward myself with an overly large order
Honestly, every order takes away TAD for a certain period of time, and the bigger and more expensive and more diverse an order is, the longer the TAD goes away for. Also when you are testing out the different snuffs over that period of time, finding new favorites and comparing them with old favorites, ect. the TAD-be-gone lasts even longer. so thats the best advice I got, works for me.
Damned
Fair assessment ? LOL
I’d like to get to the root of this. There is an unbridled passion for tobacco, and I think it goes beyond nicotine. I’d dare to say, it’s nearly a love affair. That might sound odd, but isn’t this forum testament to that? There is a deep passion we share with this plant.
@Dogwalla I support your efforts and we know you can do it. It sounds like you have many great things to get into and you may even discover something exciting in amongst it all. Perhaps a different perspective on something you’ve tried before. Godspeed.
@cstokes4 so you already snuffed 25% of the world supply of Grand Cairo
Resistance is futile!
I’ve come to terms with and fully embraced my TAD.
I am a happy man…
The more you fight something, the more it shall control you.
I’ve let my “shopping cart(s)” become TAD central. I make one BIG order, once in a while, when i can afford it. When i have extra loot, i peruse my favorities, find a shopping cart that matches my loot, and purchase.
I have no problems. I keep lists of snuff and pipe tobacco I think I may like to try. When I need to restock a favorite I’ll tack on some samples. I think because I enjoy making my own snuff so much my interest in commercial snuffs is a bit diminished. For the most part I think my sampling phase is over.
“Please, sir, I want some more.”
This is how I feel every time I log into Mr. Snuff,
@johnny Epic!
C’mon @MrSnuff! How can you say no to a face like that?
Tobacco is a great investment. Besides necessities of daily living (very important stuff), I can’t think of much better uses of my money- especially snuff. You can trade it, share it, hoard it, introduce people to it, or just snuff alone.
I recently gave up smoking cigarettes. I smoked regularly (but not that heavily) for 4 years. I was pretty much trying to quit the whole time. After I quit, I did buy a pack of American Spirits. I had gotten a $1 pack coupon in the mail that I had sent away for while still smoking. I made that pack last about two weeks. It’s probably been a month since then, and I’m doing fine. I usually snus about 4 or 5 portions a day and snuff in the evenings. I recently started pinching my Toque Coke while at work, but before that I was more of a back-of-the-hand kind of guy.
Good luck quitting smoking if that’s what you really want to do.
@Disco_Snuff I also get those darn american spirit coupons, hard to not go for those one dollar deals.
1: buy AS cigs with coupons. 2: grind cigs into snuff 3: ??? 4: PROFIT! Sorry, I love a good meme.
I’m now a week into my TAD challenge and I still haven’t bought anything.
My wife finally broke down and bought herself a pack of cigs, as the mellow RYO tobacco I had is all but gone. The only other kind I have left is Bali Shag, and while wonderful, that stuff if pretty stout.
So, the RYO is not yet gone, and is actually lasting a lot longer than I thought it would. I’m out of Captain Black for the pipe, but I still have two mostly full tins of some Mac Barrens stuff. Even my SNUS usage has gone down because of this.
The good news is that I’m using about the same amount of snuff (possibly less), and I’m feeling WAY more satisfied from it. I had my wife’s pack of Camels available to me all day and just forgot to smoke them. I reached for my FUBAR and was a happy camper. My snuff enjoyment epiphany came last Tuesday when all the cigs were gone, I forgot my pipe, and all I had was SNUS and snuff. I laid out a really nice pile of Toque Bourbon and took it with a rolled bill (for some reason I really like toasts and other fine/dry snuffs with a sniffer), and that hit the button. I actually got the same satiation out of this I usually get from my first cig of the day. It’s the first time I’ve really had that cigarette satisfaction from something else. Vitamin N is one thing, but sitting back and feeling satisfied is the dragon that I have been chasing.
Ever since that morning, I have been reaching for snuff instead of any of my smokable products, and even my SNUS is slowly falling by the wayside. I think this TAD challenge that I’m doing is helping my true enjoyment and satisfaction from snuff more than anything else I’ve ever tried.
3 weeks to go, and I have no idea what I’m even going to desire for tobacco products other than snuff after my time is done.
@Dogwalla, keep up the good work man, 3 weeks will be gone in no time! I still remember when I quit cigarettes in 2003, after smoking for 13 years(heavy). I went to my Dr. and he gave me wellbutrin that I took for three months before I set a date to quit. The one side effect it had on me was increased libido. I was like a teenager chasing my poor wife around on the playground. I was so glad that I made it, you will too.
My TAD challenge is Makla. I managed to give it up for a few days but bought a tub today. I so flipping well love it!
@Dogwalla, Great job!
Today is the two week mark of my TAD challenge. I’m half way done! Captain Black is entirely gone, but my other pipe tobaccos are holding on well. My RYO supply is down to near dust. I only have enough for 4 - 6 thinly rolled smokes. My SNUS usage has dropped quite a bit, I’m down to 2 - 4 portions a day. My snuff usage hasn’t gone nuts like I thought it would. I’m still in that 3 - 5 grams per day average, and it only varies wildly if I use HDT. For some reason 1/2 gram of that stuff only lasts me a couple of snuffing sessions, which occur about every 1/2 hour. I make sure I only carry 2g of it with me to the office.
My wife has bought a few pack of smokes this week, but I’ve actually been declining them for a lack of desire. If she really want to smoke and talk, I throw in a SNUS portion and puff on my ineffective eCigarette, or have a bowl of pipe tobacco on seldom occasion.
So, the challenge is going well. It’s changing my tobacco desires/enjoyment/consumption in a way that I think is for the better.
Just thought I’d give an update =D
You are doing good @Dogwalla!
As far myself, in the spirit of a fully embraced TAD I made a couple of what my wife would term as a “Have you lost your mind?!!!??!!” Toque orders.
I excuse it as getting ahead of the VISA problems.
Bulk orders of 5 Toque snuffs.
@Slide, I remember telling my wife back in 1999 that I needed a Bushmaster AR-15 style rifle prior to all the Y2K looting and hysteria that was to come. I sure miss and loved that rifle. lol True story btw.
I only make that excuse to myself! She wouldn’t buy it in any case. It’s all part of my stock up strategy.
For Y2K I didn’t spend any money. All ready had all the guns and ammo I wanted. But I do want more snuff on hand…
Resistance is futile.
@SnuffSniffer, there is so much logic in that! LOL I rarely miss an opportunity when presented.
Quit smoking cigarettes several times once for three years.but the obsession never left until I found snuff.Thank you snuff ! I enjoy smoking so I pick up the brier and really enjoy life.This day could be my last so I am enjoying it like it is.Besides pipe smoker live three years longer the non smokers according to the surgeon generals report #1103 page112.
This is cool stuff @Dogwalla , keep us posted. You should try to eliminate cigarettes entirely. You can easily manage with Snus, Snuff, and a Pipe once you overcome all the rest of your tobaccos. Btw, do RYO with a machine, the little hammock looking roller or the little injecter with the tubes, or an expensive machine; or do you go old school and do it by hand. More importantly, do you smoke your rollies with filters?
@Vito455 I have one of the little hammock looking things to roll the smokes with, but someone taught me another method a long time ago. It leaves frizzy end sticking out of the smoke, but you can control the thickness and tightness of the cigarette better if you roll it using a dollar bill. It’s a surprisingly simple technique, and makes for a good smoke. I use it when I’m making little bitty thin ones to help control a really strong tobacco, but for just the normal ones, I just use the machine. It’s mindless and produces good results.
No filters. I just take the smoke straight out of the exhaust pipe.
@Dogwalla I think I can visualize the dollar bill method you speak of, but I would have to see it to be sure. Those little hammock rollers are nice, and a bag of 50 filters should only be a buck or so at a local smoke shop, they work well with those rollers. If you are already on the path to eliminating cigarettes then dont bother, but if you think you are going to end up smoking for a while longer you should seriously consider buying filters. It is also easier to quit smoking filtered cigs than non-filtered cigs imo.
I think it’s impossible to have too much snuff. Just indulge your gluttony to within your budget and always try and buy bulk.
600 grams of Abraxas is 518.00 dollars plus shipping.
Just messing with you pal.
No problemo
@OscarWabbit - I agree! I have a sizable monthly snuff budget. It’s my play money. I don’t golf or gamble…I snuff
Well, today marks the end of week 3 of my TAD challenge. I still haven’t bought one bit of tobacco, but I have had access to cigs over the weekend, which makes me realize how much I’m still attracted to using them. It’s bizarre how something, even if you can be full satiated by something else, can still call to you like a siren.
I still have RYO left if you can believe it, and my SNUS supply has dwindled, but will last the week without a problem. Snuff is still my favorite way to get nicotine, but sometimes SNUS is just a lot more convenient. I was at a hockey game over the weekend, and it was just a lot more simple to pop a portion in my mouth than it was to try and sniff mass quantities of snuff while in such a crowded environment.
I have asked my wife, my only remaining source of cigs, to keep them away from me. She is threatening to quit entirely, which would make finally giving the things up a lot more simple.
One one week left on my 4 week challenge, and I’m happy that my tobacco usage has changed so much. I’m getting so comfortable in it that I think the only thing I want to buy is more SNUS before my stack of coupons expire.
I’m a peace loving man. I hate fighting of any kind. This includes TAD.
lol
Well, I completed my 4 week TAD challenge. I went the entire time without buying a single tobacco product. Here is what I learned from the experience:
- Favorite daily pipe tobacco: Captain Black
- Favorite Daily Snuffs: Grunt, HDT, and Medic
I also learned that I really can be satisfied without the cigs, that Skoal SNUS is badass, and that I don’t really have to buy ever tobacco on the market. My usual budget for 4 weeks of tobacco was about $150 (yeah, I bought and used a lot), but not buying anything in 4 weeks showed me that I have way too much on hand of things that I can get locally. I also got to appreciate what tobaccos I have a lot more because I was forced to use things that I was just trying once and letting sit. I found some really good stuff after being forced to smoke/sniff some things that I had only tried once, buy experiencing it a few more times gave me a better appreciation for it.
My snuff usage is up, my snus usage is about the same, I used less of my pipe once I realized how much I preferred Captain Black over many others, and my cigs usage is almost gone. I do enjoy a nicely rolled bit of Bali Shag once in a while, but we’re all allowed to have out dirty little pleasures.
I think the only thing I have on my ‘have to buy right now’ list is some more pipe tobacco. I’ll probably get some more snus too because I’m really low and I have a big stack of bogo coupons sitting on my desk.
I don’t know if this has been interesting for anyone else, but it’s been a real learning experience for me. I’m not planning on doing it again…ever, but I think doing it once (in the heart of my tobacco buying sickness) has been a good thing.
Dogwalla you hit it on the head why i prefer not to keep too much tobacco on hand.
