Hey all, I’ve saved enough to make a snuff purchase and wondered what your favorite SP’s were? I’m having trouble choosing which ones to buy.
I’ve had Wilsons of Sharrow Tom Buck and Toque Original, and both are very good, and popular choices. Many also agree that McChrystal’s “S’Nuff” is a really nice SP, but it only comes in the little tins, 5 grams or something. I loved all three, but I’d say that Tom Buck is my Favorite, though that may be just because its the only one I’ve in stock right now!!
My top 3, in order. J&H Wilson’s SP no.1 Toque SP extra McChrystal’s SP
Here are my top 3 in order: Mac’s SP (my all time favorite so far of any snuff) J&H Wilson’s SP No. 1 Toque Original Other’s I’ve tried and liked, no particular order: Toque SP Extra WoS Grand Cairo WoS Best SP WoS Tom Buck I’ve really got to try the Mac’s S’Nuff one of these days…
My favourites are: 1) Toque Original 2) WoS Tom Buck 3) WoS Grand Cairo
J&H Wilsons SP No.1 Toque Original WoS Best SP SG SP No.1 Top Mill Tom Buck is yummy too.
I don’t have a favourite, nor one I don’t like: Wilsons Morlaix (whether this is an SP is disputed) Toque SP Extra McChrystals SP Wilsons Tom Buck Wilsons Queens Extra Strong
I tried to decide on my favourite SP and couldn’t! I like many if not most of them and all have their place in my nose.
I can’t decide either.
I don’t have enough experience to talk about having a favorite, but that genre is definitely my cup of tea, far more than florals and flavors. If it fits, I’d like to add a vote for Toque Spanish Gem.
I forgot I also like Wilsons SS, SP2, SP100, McChrystals S’nuff and SG SP No. 1 HM.
Wilsons of Sharrow Grand Cairo
WOS Best SP
My two favorites are grand cairo and pompadour by dutch windmill which is basicly a strong clove with a mild sp a really wonderfull snuff need to get more of that one soon.
Pompadour is awesome, but I am not calling it SP. What are the parameters for SP anyway? I’ve given this some thought, and for an unscented SP, I’d chose Samuel Gawith Yellow Crest, but the Blue and Red are also very nice. For a basic SP I chose either Wilson’s SS, Tom Buck, Gold Label and SP100 and Toque Original. (I have not yet had Toque SP Extra). In the running are pretty much all the other ones from all companies. I really like them all. For a complex SP, you really can’t beat Grand Cairo. For a floral SP, Wilsons Morlaix or Strasbourg. That is, if by a broad definition they can even be called SPs.
I love Morlaix, but I don’t get any floral hints in there?
I know its a secret as to what’s in it, but i get some lemon and a hint of violet. I have Royal George in my nose now, so forget tasting some for the time being. I’ll check it out later when my nose is clear. Maybe I should call it a complex SP instead. F&T Morlaix, though, is not an SP, though the scents are similar.
I forgot about Wilson of Sharrow’s SS. I haven’t spent much time with it, but first impression was really good.
W ansd H Wilson SP No 1 WoS Best SP Toque Original WoS SP 100 The exact meaning of SP has been discussed at length. As far as I am aware there is no set parameter by the industry as to what an SP is, altough most share some similar characteristics: medium grind, moisture, nicotine and bergamot/citrus like overtones over a plain base.
WOS Gold Label. An SP of sorts and very good.
WoS Grand Cairo Toque Original WoS Best SP
I ordered some toque original, SP extra, and JH wilsons sp1
What? No Grand Cairo after almost everyone suggested it? LOL, I’m sure you will be happy with your choices.
For some reason Grand Cairo doesn’t bowl me over. I’ve finished a tin of it off quite quickly, but without the greatest of pleasure (mainly to finish it off before it became stale). The name promised much for me - I was expecting something exotic and spicey. It is distinctive though, with hints of cardamom and bergamot. As for Wilsons Morlaix, it is too floral to be an SP really. I don’t think rose oil is a traditional SP ingredient.
For me it is: Wilsons Tom Buck Toque Original McChrystals SP In that order today, though my nose changes quite a bit depending on the weather it seems.
I already have grand cairo
Grand Cairo S.S. Tom Buck
My ones are: Toque Original WoS SS WoS SP100 Tom Buck Top Mill No.1 But I think they’re changing evey week !
Ok, I got a tin of WoS IDHT20 as the toasted SP. I was a little disappointed. Now the snuff is good, but it’s not what I was expecting. Maybe someone can tell me if what I was thinking of even exists. I’m looking for something as soft and light as F&T HDT (in color, grind, dryness, and everything) but with the SP flavorings. I found HDT20 to be more lemony than just generally citrusy (if that even makes sense) I have SG Red and Blue crest coming as well as a few others. The search is very fun though.
You might like Sam Gawiths HDT and SP’s, they differ quite a bit from the standard flavours - see reviews on the review site. You may find just putting one part of something like Toque SP Extra into a plain HDT will get you closer to what you are looking for. But I agree, the search is half the fun!
My vote is WOS Gold Label for #1 and WOS Grande Cairo for #2
I wasn’t sure how to classify Hopfen either. Someone suggested floral so I kind of went with that in my mind. Its good tho.
I mixed 1:1 F&T HDT and WoS HDT20 with good results. I think that maybe I will try HDT with a little SP Extra 3:1 tomorrow.
I think you are right Spyro because I think they use the flower of the hops for flavoring.
I did a 3:1 SP Extra/Dholakia Black with excellent results. Black and SP go hand in hand imo.
@Snout, Stammheimer Hopfen tastes more like an SP than floral to me. I often use it as substitute for my daily SP.
Not really sure, but I’ve been getting through a good bit of Wilsons Best SP of late.
What only 2 25g tins a day John! Lolol Stefan
I don’t snuff it all, looking at the brown dust on my desk and computer, Lol!
I’ve narrowed my two favourites down to two (now that I’ve tried all the SPs I know are available): McChrystals SP (straight bergamot) - I always moisturise this one Toque SP Extra (bergamot and lavender) My least favourite is easy: J & H Wilsons SP No 1 - this is the only SP I find unpleasant - it has a cloying cheap chocolate aroma and not much else, but my tastes may change
Lately it’s Toque Original and SP Extra.
Grand Cairo and SP Extra, so far
These necroposts are cropping up everywhere. Perhaps the zombie apocalypse will begin online. Guard your snuff stashes! We knew this day would come!!!
Toque sp’s are great as is McChrystal’s S’Nuff.
Zombies … SP Extra is tops for me … then maybe WoS SP Best(Best SP), QES and Tom Buck.
Of the three SP’s I have had I rank them in this order…
1. WOS Tom Buck
2. WOS SS
3. WOS Best SP (may be due to the age and storage that I get this from my local tobacconist)
I find it interesting that the “Best” SP is lowest on my list. Still Tom Buck is something special to me and more and more I am finding it and SP’s in general to be my go to daily snuffs.
Ken
WoS Tom Buck and J&H Wilsons SP No. 1
Toque SP Extra and WoS Best SP
Gawith Hoggarth SP, J & H Wilson’s SP No. 1, and Toque SP Extra.
I prefer not to risk a classifying, but, either Wilson’s SP’s are greats, either S.Gawith ones, crests or all others are very kinds too.Without forget J&H N°1,the best seller snuff in England I’ve heard, and McC(I have a weakness for the skunky Hopfen here and now)
Like in all, variety is highter than uniform…
Like in all, variety is highter than uniform…
@gandalf is that a common French phrase? I like it! What is it in French?
@Xander ,yes it seems a little to be an aphorism but it’s only a home-maid.
Tom Buck
WoS Best SP
J and H Wilsons SP
DragunFire Spiced SP
Someone’s getting ready to release his new product?
I love the name. When will it be ready to sample?
I’ve only tried Toque Original and SP Extra. Not sure which I prefer as I like both, though I find they can be a bit hard to take. Are most SP’s a similar grind/dryness as the Toque ones? Or are there easier to take SP’s?
Well Toque’s Original has a medium moisture/grind; however, the medium that Toque uses is definitely finer than Wilson’s.
Toque SP Extra and Quit are a fine grind.
J&h Wilson sp no 1 Toque sp extra Tom buck Mcchrystal sp Mcchrystal s’nuff When’s the DragunFire Spiced SP released @Snuffster I have to try it. Sp is my favorite type these days.
I don’t even know what makes a snuff an SP to begin with so I cant answer. If GH Western Glory is an SP then I like that one a lot. same with SG Vanilla
my top 3 at this time are:
Toque SP Extra
WOS SP 100
Toque Original
is WOS Grand Cairo an SP?
@Mr.O @KebAMP - probably around April(ish)
Thank’s for the heads-up! It won’t kill me right??
I can’t guarantee that.
Russian snuff roullette? Should I email you my medical history?
McCrystal’s S’Nuff is my favorite, but the price makes me buy Tom Buck a lot more often.
I would really love to see 6 Photo make an SP. It would be interesting, I think.
The only SP I have tried so far is Grand Cairo. I agree that an SP from 6 photo would be very interesting. Maybe an SP on their black tobacco base.
SPs … tough topic! Depends what you’re after and what you’re willing to call an SP. For traditionality and nothing else, I say J&H Wilson’s SP No1. For nicotine, that’s Toque SP Extra. For total package, maybe GH SP or WoS Gold Label … very subjective on a very fuzzy area
I agree with @ar47 although have not tried the Toque. SnuffStore Traditional SP is an interesting take. However, I am partial to the Gold Label. For me it is the most balanced and flavorful.
I think my favourite is WoS Grand Cairo, although I stupidly forgot to add some Gold Label to my last order when I was testing their SPs side by side. Tom Buck is good (I’ve got some in my nose right now!) but the Best SP I was a bit disappointed with, a little plainer in scent than the other two. Toque SP Extra is great, love the bergamot in it.
from what I’ve heard best on British products means lightest or mildest.
In order : Wilson’s Best SP McCrystal’s Smokers Blend Toque Original
WOS Beat Dark is also one of my favorites. Excellent base tobacco and the proper amount of bergamot.
Toque Original, SP Extra and St Clements are my favorites in any order you like.
WoS Tom Buck Toque SP Extra SG SP Scotch WoS Best Dark JHW SP No.1 Other favourites that are close, but not strictly SP: Toque Berwick Brown McC Mild Lemon or Sicillian Burst Toque St Clements M&W Jocks Choice WoS Grand Cairo
i just got some McChrystals smokers blend in the mail and its pretty good. its a bummer they only sell tiny tins or 200g tubs. i would get more if they did
Was Toque SP for me for a long time. Now it is ambrosia. Tom buck good too.
M&W Mature Crumbled is, to my nose, tremendous.
Definition of SP is a contentious topic as well
If inclusion of Bergamot is not a hard requirement, I’ll throw Toque Grapefruit into the mix :) SP grind, citrus aroma, close enough? One of @Roderick’s best creations IMHE

Hi @IgotWood, please don’t use the apostrophe and other special characters while writing posts in this forum.
It might sound ludicrous, but for some users these signs trigger the deletion of the succesive text (apparently it just happened to your post). See http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/12074/apostrophe#latest Cheers!
Thanks. I mentioned WoS Gold Label is my favorite. Toque Spanish Gem is another.
Only just got into the SP’s and I like them a lot. They are a nice every day use snuff and also help to clear my sinuses without having to use a menthol.
Only tried McChrystals SP, WOS Best SP, Tom Buck, Grove, Apri and SG SP Scotch at the moment.
Love the McChrystals SP best at the moment for its smooth faint bergamot and smooth tobacco. But also don’t mine Best SP with a bit of Tom Buck mixed in to give it a bit of a bergamot lift. Tom Buck by itself is a bit too much Bergamot for me. Also like the Apri, Grove and SP Scotch but they are not really a 100% genuine SP.
Ordered Toque original, Toque sp extra, Toque Spanish Gem, Toque St Clements, Toque Berwick Brown, J&H Wilsons No 1, GH SP, WOS Gold Label, WOS Grand Cairo & Best Dark. As looking for another few options for a daily SP.
@beantin You have some great options in there. I have Berwick Brown, Tom Buck, SP Scotch and Best Dark in bulk. Maybe Grand Cairo too (I am fairly sure I got a half pound drum of that). SP Extra, St Clements, and Spanish Gem are the three tins I get if I am using the 6 for 5 deal of 25g tins (2 tins of each) from Toque. All three are great. I also like using plain snuffs, and adding a little F&T highly perfumed snuff, Royal George, or other potent snuff as a mixer, to give the plain a little lift. This works well with the Viking line, any SP that you start losing interest with, or plain snuffs from Wilsons or Toque.
Toque Original for me, best SP out there as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve only tried a small handful, but the Gawith Hoggarth SP tops my list. Easy to take a whole ton of it, plus the scent is light and refreshing enough that I never get sick of it. Kinda reminds me of the way Fresca tastes, actually.
