tough one that. hate dell laptons. keep gumming up my immaculate typing skills. I wish I had my old French snuff box from Gulfport Mississippi from 1973…darned ex wife first ex got it and who knows? nice one too. My chinese snuff bottles are very nice but way too nice to carry with pocket crap. so I leave it to you…what to carry ttreasured snuff in???
At the moment, I’m using an Altoids Smalls tin. Not ideal, and I’m still looking for something better. I have some glucose test strip containers that I’m working on. They come with a dessicant polymer lining, which is easy to deactivate, but just when I was feeling smug about that, I noticed a faint plasticy odor in snuff that I stored in one. I think I can fix this too, but until then I’m using the Altoids tin and trying to tolerate snuff that’s dryer than I’m used to.
So far my Patrick Collin’s Zebra Wood box is my favorite. Perfect size, beautiful grain, and holds tight.
Love my Patrick Collins Tripletech oak box. Great quality and size. Love the options with this. In fact, I just ordered another one in walnut.
I have twenty two snuff boxes and over thirty snuff bottles with quite a few favorites. Until I splurge for a silver snuff box my PC Zebra wood will remain as one of my top three picks. I must say that putting the wrong snuff in a box/bottle can impact greatly how much one loves it. My collections encompass a broad range of styles and types mostly procured inexpensively over E-Bay. A dark wood flip top box is my absolute favorite although I don’t use a single flavor quick enough to prevent the boxful from drying out. I am working on arranging a humidor style storage system to keep my wood boxes in. It is the same for snuff bottles. Snuff in them will eventually dry out. Bone and stone bottles are my faves and cap fitted spoons are the shiznit.
Toque tins are pretty handy. I also use an old Burt’s Bees ointment tin. Seals really well…sometimes too well, and can cause quite the mess while trying to drive and snuff. Was a pain in the rear to clean it out, but it’s very discreet.
Last month I have bought two of this: http://www.drechselshop-online.de/tabatieren.htm I really like them. They look beautiful and keep the snuff fresh.
I use a couple of flip top hardwood boxes, one a standard clover leaf box in rosewood and the other a walnut box. I pinch, so flip tops work best for me. I have a couple of P.C and Heartwood boxes but prefer the flourish of a flip top box.
My favourite snuffbox is most definitely my Regnas sea urchin fossil lid, gold plated silver snuffbox
@n9inchnails The Regnas boxes are magnificent, I keep promising myself one. The spherolite rhiolite attracts me. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SNUFFBOX-SPHEROLITE-RHIOLITE-GOLD-PLATED-SILVER-925-/330595621586
@greybeard19 - my ex wife threw half of my old snuff box collection out (or sold it) denied it ever since the f@£%^&* b)(*&! Currently my favourites are my engraved lid silver box by Ari.D.Norman and a Toque bottle.
well I know a guy whos wife washed his meerschaum pipes.
My teak Pat Collins Triple tech. Brilliant snuff box IMO
@khalid wow the price of those boxes has nearly doubled since I got mine, I only paid $160 for mine and now the cheapest one is like $300!
PC triple tech.
@Uwe thanks for this link, i will go and buy one or two too. they look really nice and elegant. seems like they are made with great care and perfectly fit to contain snuff. i mean, it´s a Tabatier we talking about XD XD
I notice that no one has mentioned the Bernard’s snuff bottles. I rather like the aesthetic of them and am thinking of getting one soon. Has anyone used one before? Does anyone like/dislike them alot?
I use the tins that the snuff came in lol
I find that the tripletech holds moisture fairly well. The fit is very tight.
OK. It’s overpriced. Described as snuff dose, but could equally be used for pills (ermtony: ‘Pebble Box’). Sillems. You pay a lot for that fancy name apparently. But what the heck. I enjoy using it. The other box I use for work is also German. The top has a sliding dowel, so it’s a hardwod ‘sneezbox’. It works fine loaded freshly daily.
I’ve begun to use my Bernard snuff bottle more instead of keep it on the nightstand and I love it. I keep it in the breast pocket of my overhauls , snap the pocket, and the blue stopper barely sticks out. I’ve had more folks wanting to try my snuff when it comes from a ‘legit’ container, lol! And besides that, when turned over on the back of the hand, it makes a perfectly round pile . (Clentching the blue stopper in your teeth as you do this only adds to the cowboy effect) , If I happen to get hit hard in the chest, I suppose shards of porcelain and snuff would enter my heart, but isn’t that the way we should all pass on?
Snuffhead - that is a beautiful snuffbox!! Looks like it is in immaculate condition! In my opinion and going off on just appearance and of course the silver, NM boxes are thee best snuffboxes! I’ll have to tell my husband to skip the jewelry this Christmas and just get me a snuffbox
@ desirexe, yes it’s a really nice box and keeps the snuff fresh. I won it on ebay about six months ago. Hope your in luck this Christmas…
I use a small empty lip balm container and a small metal without screw can that comes with candy.
The ones I carry with me daily are a padauk TripleTech and a Heartwood. I have a couple small silver snuffboxes, and one antique wooden one, but they stay at home.
@doctorbeat Sorry for the delay, but here a picture of my snuff panoply: To your questions: It keeps fresh enough for the week, it’s small and I don’t keep a lot of snuff in it, I just it to carry around. And no, I don’t pinch from it like in a full-size can, I put my index finger in it and brint a small lump, then I join with my thumb; but my favorite method is to make a small mount in the back of my hand, not in the anatomical snuffbox but behind the index finger, and, for that, the sharp lid is excellent.
@Kepler: thanks for posting that, I don’t believe I’ve seen lip balm containers like that before. I just bought a Carmex 15g tub and I’m attempting to remove all traces of lip balm from it. It’s quite a wide container, and it looks as though I should be able to use the index finger method you described.
Last saturday I’ve seen at synagogue a guy with three beautiful large silver snuffboxes (his snuffs, by the way, were not so good, he puts too much aromatic oils there). Well, they look fantastic, but I doubt they are airtight. I wouldn’t buy something like that. At least not that large, where the tobacco dries fast. If I meet the guy during the weekdays, I’ll take a picture of those boxes to post here.
And those are mine. The one in the middle is silver, two others - pewter. On the left - from India. On the right - israeli souvenir snuffbox, hardly can really be used for snuff, cause the rubber gasket doesn’t let to close it properly.
Patrick Collins… all the way.
beautiful collection of boxes there, Gosen’s Schnoz!! As for me, I have only 2 PC tripletech boxes and love them both.
Ah … @Gosen’s Schnoz … i thought I had a great PC collection … you just K-O’ed me … NICE!!! Love them.
@Gosen’s Schnoz Excellent! :-B
I love all the woodwork in that Pic.
I would have to agree, my Tripletech (Probably Zebrawood) is my favorite by far. I can use a spoon or just pinch.
Thank you, gents! I have very few luxurious frills in this life, but if there’s one thing I won’t hold back on, it’s snuff and all the embellishments that come with it. There are more on the way! As of Dec. 5, 2011, Snuff Gear currently has some new PC boxes in stock. I just bought six more to add to the collection before they vanish like always. Have a peek.
@Transistor I call it “The Snuff Bar.” I greatly appreciate the woodwork, too; it brings the outdoors into my inner-city dwellings. However, my carbon footprint is getting to be of Paul Bunyan proportions. God forgive my vain lust for wooden snuff gear and furniture… Hail Mary, full of grace… the Lord is with thee. Ble…
^:)^
@gosens I really like the zebrawood example and will order one asap.
The zebrawood is my favorite as well
Ok, I just bought one. LOL. Once I saw that there were only two left in stock, I jumped on it. Somebody hurry up and claim the last one!!
Congrats on your Zebra Wood Triple Tech! I currently have the single-compartment Zebra wood, which holds my F&T HDT, and it’s gorgeous beyond description.
i have each of the type of Triple Techs … but it appears the inlay work is a little different … hmmmm … do i buy or no? ah … i’m thinking yes …
@ Snuffbrant
A merry Christmas it shall be.
Tom is shipping it out today. Unbelievably fast service. Should have it in a couple of days.
@ Furious We’ll have to change his nickname from Two-day Tom, to One-day Tom.
No kidding! I wish they all were that fast.
Couldn’t resist, @Gosen’s Schnoz … ordered the two I didn’t have, the Oak-BW TT and the Walnut-S TT … i have issues. ;)
@Snuffbrant It’s a comfort to know that I’m not the only one. Speaking of issues, the demon of financial chaos is sending me signals pertaining to this little number. It says, “This would be your favorite snuff box if you were to get it.” >:) Evil knows no bounds…
give in to evil, Gosen … that snuffbox is yours for the taking ( …errr, buying…) good luck!
Go for it! Embrace your dark side
The demon of financial chaos has got a history lecture in progress, and the loads are hummin’. I’m pickin’ up everything; I’ve got the radar screens on full rotation. I must cut the levels of distortion and modulate the volume…
*My hand ambivalently reaching toward the wallet containing my Visa card*
$152.30 USD of crafted silver beckoning for my companionship… Snuffbrant and Slide’s unrelenting support… Christmas on the way… on the edge… caan’t breaaathe…

Getting back on topic, favorite snuff box or bottle. I’d have to say that it depends on the snuff or where I will be for the day. For instance, I prefer my snuff vial with built-in spoon over all else when I’m doing McChrystals Mild Lemon or WofS Lemon. However, that’s only when I’m not at work. To use a vial at work would mean that I could only take snuff in the restroom stall, and going into the toilet stall twenty-odd times in an eight hour period would raise some eyebrows, to say the least; I don’t need coworkers going around thinking I have amebic dysentery. With McChrystals O&G, I use my Posh Bullet and usually take it to work when I’m in the mood for menthol because it is the most discreet one-action-dose-giver. No lid to slide, no pinching, no cleaning up after a bump, very fast, and most importantly, very discreet; it looks like a ritzy nasal spray if someone catches a short glimpse. Otherwise, in all other cases, I carry a Patrick Collins Triple Tech and change it up every now and then with a PC single compartment snuff box.
You can always count on me for support! Last night I helped a friend that was struggling with a decision to buy and new Colt 45.
I pushed him over the edge…I mean I helped him with his decision making process…
I like the concept of a bullet, but in my experience I find that I snuff too deeply most of the time. I suppose I could work on my bullet technique, but why bother when I can carry PCTT boxes around with me!
During the summer I made some tabatieres with tightly fitting lift-off lids from very thick-skinned oranges instead of bergamot. http://imageshack.us/g/651/b11zq.jpg/ Since about May 2011 the Blue Max and Butterfly have been used almost exclusively, preferred over purchased wood and pewter boxes. Although light, the boxes have the hardness of wood but with the flexibility of thick leather, while the hard waxed interior (originally the fruit’s exterior) doesn’t absorb moisture. The Blue Max, being unvarnished, is a little grubby now. The butterfly box was varnished twice with Atelier gloss medium and when cleaned with a damp cloth still looks new. I’ve shown them to many people, but none so far have guessed what they are made from.
@Gosen’s Schnoz - the silver box you posted is the one that I use as my everyday snuff box. To my knowledge there are only three genuine silver, flip top snuff boxes available new on the market, these are: the one you picture (plain or engraved lids), the Regnas boxes and another small silver box retailed by Walsh Brothers, a UK silversmith. All of the others are pill boxes - and beware of anything with a so called ‘useable depth’; you should be able to take every grain of snuff in a snuff box, not just the top layer because it’s is a miniscule size (always check dimensions by drawing it out on a piece of paper). I am not including the various round ‘dosing’ snuff boxes.
The box you picture is a good, solid, workaday affair and is undeniably good looking in a traditional way. Because it is not a bespoke, craftsman made box it will, however, come with a leak or two. Whilst the closure is better than most metal boxes, there will be some leakage if you shake the box over a sheet of paper. This can be remedied if you have the nerve for it though. Just wrap the box in a hand towel and explore putting some pressure on the area of the leak - you can slowly close it off that way. It took me half an hour of experimentation to sort mine out and now it is a great, practical and very pretty snuff box that I use day in, day out. Go on, treat yourself:)
Wow, awesome snuff boxes! I’m all agog here, wishing I were wealthy and as blessed with excellent taste as the rest of you guys. I use a PC Tripletech and a Heartwood box daily and they’re both just right for me. I also have a pewter(?) pocket ashtray that one of our members gave to me that I carry every day, and it’s sweet, just perfect for carrying snuff. I have a couple of those Bernard ceramic bottles too, and those are great except for getting snuff out of them. I’ve never perfected the anatomical snuff box method, and have pretty much gotten away from using spoons unless I’m relaxing at my desk or in front of the tube. Even then though, pinching has gotten so second nature that it’s usually the boxes I go to automatically.
@Uwe, those boxes are fantastic! I’m going to have to figure out how to order at least one of those, I think they’re the nicest ones I’ve seen yet. Thanks!
@PhiilpS
Those look great!
One of the nice things about snuff is the regalia needed for me its all part and parcel
I have a triple tech (recommended) also a 3.5 inch brass Moroccan bottle that always gets comments but my best and for me my favorite snuff holder is a 2 inch .925 silver tap triangular box.
Where did you ever get the cool idea of using thick skinned oranges? And, forgive my ignorance, but what is Blue Max? I especially like your Chinese chess looking pieces pictured below.
@Snuffster
@Slide
It’s all over now… After some reckless consideration, I give in to the abhorrent demon of financial terror and destruction. Let me give you all some healthy advice: “Never eyeball a lavish gadget daily for too long, otherwise you might wind up like me - pissing off the wife with unwanted credit statement surprises and living slightly beyond my means.” I suppose I’m on my way to purchase the Silver Baby of Elegance and Suaveness. I guess I could have something to pass down to the kids that I don’t have.
@Pr1uk I like your Silver Tap Triangular Box, but forgive me for striving to not look at it for too long.
@-)
OMG 158 US bones, what have I done? I’ve just pulled the trigger on getting the silver patterned snuffbox from SnuffStore.com. 8-} I’ve seriously lost it… Uuuhhhhhhggg… No more snuffboxes…
Anyhow, I just went back to the website to have another look at it, and I guess I got the last one cause it’s not listed anymore. Gee whiz, go figure…
You did good!
Slide the enabler…
" @Gosen’s Schnoz @Pr1uk I like your Silver Tap Triangular Box, but forgive me for striving to not look at it for too long"
I know what you mean i found the trouble is that there are too many snuff box collectors who dont use them but keep the prices way too high. This little silver tap box is just under 2 inches high and works like a dream with fine medium moist snuff anyway it cost me a lot of money well i had to have it and paid £60 for it. Was told it was Edwardian but the only marks are the 0.925 silver mark and the makers FM over T so how they dated it i dont know.
Whatever i use it daily and love it the look and the feel it still works 100% the top flips open to fill and the slider catches so nothing spills out in the pocket one of my better usable buys and the cost well thats done and dusted now.
I usually use a smashbox
I love the black ones that Tom use to sell at Nicotine Rush; they keep snuff fresh for a long time and have great dimensions for carry. I still have a few, but haven’t used them as an everyday carry in a while. I currently use them to store the snuff that I don’t want to finish from the PC boxes that I want to change out for the day or week.
@Snuffster
Say, does that Patterned Silver Snuff Box ever tarnish, stain, or catch fingerprints easily? Do I need to purchase a can of Brasso to keep its luster prime?
I know the Poschel snuffboxes are smaller than we expected, but it’s a really nice box. It and my aluminum bullet are enough to get me through work, so I wouldn’t mind something a little bigger.
@Gozen’s Schnoz … the dark side owns you now, very well done!
