Fantástico Café - café hecho en casa

I’m sure I’m not the first to try this, but I thought it worth mentioning. Until I surfed onto this site a few weeks ago I’d not used snuff for nearly five years, - the retail market in western Canada had dried up completely. About the same time I bought a tin of McCrystals S.P. which I never opened thus making it at least five years old, perhaps older depending how long the tobacconist had it in stock. Needless to say the snuff was dry, stale and flavourless. While waiting for an order from MR Snuff I’d like to enjoy snuff again. This morning I ground some coffee beans in my Black & Decker grinder. The grind, even set to the finest consistency, is too coarse for snuff; however in the process the machine makes a small amount of very fine grind that sticks to the very top of the holding chamber. I mixed about 1 part of the finely ground coffee with about four parts McCrystals S.P. The SP is now at least palatable and usable; the oils in the coffee beans have added some moisture to the snuff.

I’ve ground up coffee beans before and exactly like you mentioned I scraped the fine coffee off the top. I tried to snuff that but it clogged me up badly. I should’ve tried to mix it with something else. I might have to try it again.

No need to do any of that, Abraxas has done it for you with Cafe 11. It is really the only snuff everyone should try. not only does it have nicotine it also has caffeine and chocolate.

I absolutely agree with you and based on the reviews I’ve read, I’m planning to test all Abraxas snuff over the next few months. However, in the meantime, my first order from MR Snuff sits in customs and I’m stuck with a can of outdated McCrystals S.P. and nothing else to snuff. It was a good temporary measure.

What’s with all the GRINDING??? I simply put a few WHOLE COFFEE BEANS into a container with some snuff, give it a few shakes every day and let it sit until I get enough coffee flavor in the snuff.

I am going to try this with some Kendal Brown Plain to see if I could recreate SG Black Coffee!!!

I’m sure that would work just fine, but while living in a snuff wasteland, I needed snuff that was palatable NOW LOL

If you use whole coffee beans, you have more coltrol over how much coffee essence is in your snuff. Granted… it is a longer process! BTW: There is no upper limit as to how many “a few” are.

@howdydave How extensively have you experimented with this? Since I’ve got 500 g of Viking Dark I’ll have to try this and tweak it a lot, but before I do I have a question. Does the brand or roast of beans make a big difference? I’ve got plenty of Hills Bros original to try this with.

I just added 5 or 6 coffee beans to about 1g of snuff in a jar. I’m going to keep shaking it around and try it every day for a few days until I get it where I want. I will keep this post updated. I tried it after about one hour and I got no coffee essence at all which surprised me. Maybe this could take longer then I thought.

@howdydave - think you may find two issues -

  1. The flavouring in KB, although subtle, will still get through
  2. The base tobacco may be different (as is the case with most of the Wilsons’ sorts)
It may be interesting to see how well it further develops the coffee aroma/caffeine if the beans are left longer. I have an unopened tin of SnuffStore Café Noir (SG Black Coffee with their label) in one of those wonderful, well-sealed tins Snuff Store used for their own brands before they changed hands. Bob Gregory (at Samuel Gawith) advised me that, like good malt whisky left in the barrel, Black Coffee also continues to improve with age - may just try to keep this one for a decade or so!

I’d be interested in the results too. In fact I might just see if I have any whole beans left and shake some up with some Viking Dark to add just a hint of essence.

I’m going to try this. I have some Melitta Dark Roast beans; very strong, but not bitter. I’ll have to order some KD Brown plain, add a few beans and just leave it for several months, then see how it tastes. It may prove interesting.

After 36 hours marinating, I have to say that the Kendal Brown Plain is starting to take on the flavor of the coffee beans. I found KB Plain a little sharp and if nothing else, the beans have sweetened it up. I’m already really enjoying this snuff and I’m sure after another week or so, it will be even better. I can already see similarities to Black Coffee.

WOWZAA!

Loving my new SG Kendal Brown Plain Coffee! thans @howdydave

My Viking Dark hasn’t taken on the coffee flavor very much after 3 days. I have around 5-7 beans in 20-23 grams. Adding more.

An interesting comment; perhaps my original experiment, started a week ago and the reason I created this thread, has its merits. The McCrystals S.P., the subject of my experiment, gained flavour throughout the week as coffee dust and its accompanying oils have blended with the snuff. The result, although not Abraxas Café 1, has greatly improved the McCrystals S.P., Fortunately necessity, which they say is the mother of invention, in this case to improve the flavour of an old can of snuff, diminished three days ago, when my order from MR Snuff arrived, thus releasing me from the nightmarish tobacco wasteland I was living in.

I had 5 to 7 beans in one gram of snuff. I think you need way more @TomStrasbourg

@fbones24. Right you are. I’m going to add even more, though I have 10-15 in there now.
