F&T Tins have Ammonia Smell...?

So, I received my tin of Kendal Brown a couple days back now… But, after opening, I closed up the tin again, gave it a good shake, and opened up the tin (just wanted to see it all fluffed up :stuck_out_tongue: ) . And after giving it a little sniff from the tin, I swore I smelt ammonia… Even now as the tin is beside me on the desk, breathing, it still has a faint ammonia smell to it. What gives…? Is it similar to Toque, where I would have to let it sit for a bit without the lid? Thanks again for your help -Michael

Ammonia is the bi product of snuff-making. It proves that the snuff is fresh. Search there is plenty written about this on this forum.

Ahhh I see. I figured it was something to that effect. Yeah I should have just searched it… My bad :stuck_out_tongue: . Thanks SnuffHead.

Having to sit through the ammonia in a fresh snuff is a small price to pay, it is a sign of freshness. Beware of a bulk snuff with no ammonia smell at all. My bulk Toque Whiskey and Honey is one year old in a glass jar, it still reeks when opened. Great thing is that it dissipates quickly after decanting. You might try searching , as you said, this is a basic snuff situation that gets covered a lot.

Hey, I’d rather it be fresh with an ammonia smell, than stale, right? :stuck_out_tongue:

Right!

not me man I dream of the day all snuff comes in rusted tins and passes for sawdust.

@bob I have a few more cans of Bruton in that condition. Do you want one? Really good stuff I say.

What was the situation when one could go to the tobacconist and buy snuff which was weighed out in a paper bag? How did the shops keep the snuff fresh in those days? And how is it kept fresh today?

@ Pieter: I beleive they used to keep it in earthenware crocks initially, then probably porcellain or glass jars as time went on. I’m not sure what they used to seal them with. Probably wax initially when shipped from the mill. Once in the store…? Perhaps that F&T history book that a few members have might shed some light on this.

I’d love to get my hands on some snuff literature

@bruteforce&ignoreance : Thanks a lot for that! Only problem is most of it isn’t in english, but I found a few that were
