F&T San Domingo

I opened a tin of this about a week ago, and I’ve been taking a few pinches every evening. Still can’t really decide if I like it or not. Even though people say it has violet in it, it’s not at all like a floral – at least, not the high, sweet notes that you think of when you think floral. Rather, it’s got an almost bitter, vegetable flavour, which isn’t too bad. I think I heard it’s scented with absolute violet, which is an extract of the whole plant, not just the flower. The drip is very bitter, but not unpleasant. But it could have a bit more of a nicotine kick. In that regard, the way I can enjoy it best is with a HDT chaser. But I could just as easily take the HDT without the SD. Not something I think I’ll rush out to buy again, and the tin will last a while. Still, worth having in the fridge. Nothing like as interesting as the SWS and Abraxas snuffs.

@JakartaBoy - Have to say that this is one of my favourite ‘evening’ F&T’s. However, when I got my first tin of this blend, I was a little underwhelmed. I guess it didn’t fit into the typical F&T profile of strongly perfumed/highly scented snuffs that I had encountered up to that point. To my mind this is basically a really nice cigar type/plain tobacco blend. There is subtle fragrances there to support the African dark fired leaf (I pick out the violet and more so the cedar wood) but these never seem to dominate and just drift in and out enhancing the scents of the actual tobacco. It did take me a good 1/2 way through my first tin of this to come to the realisation that I really rated this one, but I wouldn’t be without a tin of this now. I reckon this one; Macouba, Old Paris, Kendal Brown and [obviously] HDT are probably the all day/anytime F&T’s. I really appreciate Johnny & Nigel’s creations, but I think that Santo Domingo could well be argued to be the forerunner and/or inspiration behind of some of their connoisseur snuff blends; The grind certainly has some similarities; dark, course and moist, with the star being the leaf rather than the casing. One of my firm favourites for sure

I don´t detect any floral hint either. To me, F&T Santo Domingo is the premium version of SG Black Rappee: a hint sweeter and without the rubber-tire smell of the latter, but pretty similar overall. BTW, If you think that your tin of Santo Domingo will last a while, I suggest you to transfer the content to a glass recipient. This snuff is very likely to corrode the original tin and hence to get ruined if you left it alone for some time. Check out other discussions about the issue (just in case you didn´t know about the case).

I find that the “sweetness” that detects Jakartaboy comes from a spare mixture of a hint of violet plus cedarwood that I detect clearly. Not bad if you want a mostly plain black fermented snuff but with a bit of “something” more besides tobacco. Snuffvilliain gave a wise advice, transferring from the tin to a glass jar is mandatory with most black moist snuffs in my experience. Myself had a tin of WoS “Best Dark” corrode his tin to the point of opening a hole and other one of F&T “Princes Special” that rusted his tin from the inside too.
