whats the story on this? has anyone had it? there’s no review on snuffreviews and tom doesn’t have it. i’m curious to try it.

X

Its no longer made. I think ermtony got ahold of some old ones on ebay including this. He can probably shed some light on how it is. Check his personal site: Ermtony’s siteWhere did you hear of it?

E

The tin that was on Ebay actually contained Perique pipe tobacco, not snuff.

S

i was looking through the F & T reviews at snuff reviews and the Perique had zero reviews. It’s too bad they don’t make it anymore. Do they come out with new flavors often or no?

X

Perhaps it was not a snuff at all. Perique might be a little harsh as snuff. That may be a mistake on the snuffreviews site, it seems to be full of them. The story behind F&T is well documented here. There are even books published about them. Some are available electronically. Do a search for “Behind the Bow Windows.” The short answer is no, they don’t come up with new flavors, but the long answer is a little complicated. The existing ones are all that remains of an extinct company. Wilsons of Sharrow has taken up the production of the existing 13 varieties and holds the recipes for the rest except for HDT. That one was formerly made for F&T by Samuel Gawith who retain the recipe and sell it under their own name as Irish D Light. The current HDT is the “newest” F&T release, being a Wilsons creation. There have been hints that Wilsons would revive some of the extinct varieties if there was enough demand. We’ve had no word on that though here.

thats very interesting, indeed. i did a search as you suggested but most of the links were broken. i just received some tins of F&T’s macouba and morlaix and i’m very impressed and interested in exploring them more. it’s unfortunate a great snuff company should fold as it did. but it would be dandy if Wilson’s did revive the lost varieties.

deleted - link useless.

I’m sure I’ve heard of it but a quick check of my old snuff books - including the excellent Hugh McCausland’s - drew a blank. I also have an F and T listing from around the time the business was sold and it does not have Perique on it.

Actual, true, honest to goodness perique is hard to get ahold of. There is only one place it can be grown. Half of perique has to do with the soil. I’m not about to type out a history report on the subject. Anyone interested enough can use the google. I’m almost tempted to find a way to buy some and use it as part of a snuff blend. I know it’s got spice and gives a hell of a tongue-bite when smoked. That’s why it’s usually blended. Anyway, interesting that it’s been used in snuff before.

Ok. I finally got 'round to giving it the google. Not perique in general, but peique snuff. It seems Hurricane Katrina took it all from us.READ THIS

Well, that´s more than just a shame… :(((

Z

Perique is actually making a strong comeback thanks to concerned folks in the pipe tobacco industry. I wouldn’t be surprised if in five years there was plenty for snuff.

B

F&T also has pipe tobaccos too. Never tried them wonder who makes them. I remember reading on here that perique used to be a common snuff tobacco not sure if that is true. I’d love to try it though as I love it in pipes.

C

I’m growing some Perique.

X

@cstokes: you will need to grow it in St. James Parish to get the right taste from what I have read.

T

St. James parish Louisiana! I live in Jeff Davis Parish Not far from St. James. I sure growing some Perique here would be good.

T

its aged in tree stumps.

X

From what I understand, you need three things to make it: correct tobacco variety, correct soil/growing conditions, and correct aging process/condtions. @thehookster: you might be able to grow something close. You might also be able to buy some locally. Look for something like this: ebay auctionIt looks like pipe tobacco, but might be suitable to make snuff.

J

The variety used for making the historical Perique is a red burley. I would think any tobacco using the special stump stuffing process would yield a decent Perique style cure. In fact I just read a in link from here that there is “Perique” being made with a different type that has been deemed better. Regardless, St. James has it coined. Also see my wizardry in the thread" What are you doing with your Toque Rustica".

I am bidding on an unopened tin of Perique, made in 2005. Hope to win it, and try making snuff with it. After reading about it, it should make a good blender snuff.

@thehookster‌-I was born, or hatched, in Jennings. The whole famn damily moved to California when I was tiny. In the late fifties my grandpa would get Perique shipped direct from some old farmer and rolled his own cigarettes with it…except on Sundays when he’d smoke tailor made Picayunes, also shipped in from Louisiana. He had a very hairy chest after smoking that stuff I made some snuff from GL Pease Fillmore. Not bad, but it works better in a pipe. I’ll give it another go soon. @Juxtaposer‌; I live not far from the Green River Valley in Kentucky. It has been called the epicenter of fire cured burley, and there’s an outfit up there making a perique-like tobacco. I’ll try to find out more info and post here.

Here’s an interview with a perique producer: http://pipesmagazine.com/blog/put-that-in-your-pipe/the-mystique-of-perique/ I bought some directly from grower Percy Martin back in the late '90s, still have some and treat it like gold. and @chefdaniel, I used to smoke “Picayunes” back in the 60’s…those and “Home Runs”, either one would make you sit down for a while. edit: here’s another article about the Martin family farm http://blog.nola.com/tpmoney/2008/07/perique\\_has\\_made\\_a\\_fiery\\_comeb.html

@Satyr, I’m pretty sure Cornell and Diehl sell pure perique, for people who blend their own pipe tobacco. I never bought any, but I did try their Bayou Night, which was rumoured to be around 50% perique. It was good stuff, it didn’t really have a strong bite, although it did have a very strong, spicy flavour and a VERY high nicotine content. I don’t think I ever managed to smoke a whole bowl of it and I usually smoked it in my smallest pipe. I don’t think it would work well as snuff, although you could probably use some perique as a spice. I’ve tried making my own snuff with some of the other high-perique pipe tobaccos and the flavour is very strong, not really pleasant. But it’s out there and available if you look.

J

What? No! Perique is fantastic as a snuff. A must try for any home grinder. Like all powerfully fermented snuffs it is an acquired taste that is well worth the acquisition.

M

Having read the above thread, I just purchased a 50 gm tin of 2012 Perique blending tobacco on eBay. I can’t wait to try it. I don’t have the skills to really make a quality snuff, but I have a coffee grinder, so I can grind it quite fine, or coarse. Any opinions would be welcome.

C

I have a pound of ribbon cut Percy Martin Perique for trade (I know this should be on the other page). Plain, unscented natural snuff and toasts gladly accepted in trade. @Mouse‌ I copped a puff on gramp’s Picayune as a wee lad. For years I thought I had personally invented the Technicolor Yawn. Since Perique is so deeply fermented and unique my preference would be for a demi gros mill with a good % of sweet Virginia, perhaps some unsweetened cavendish and something special to make a coonass smile…as long as it’s not too much Tabasco. Some sassafras might give it a root beer scent, some ginger maybe, some Peychaud’s Bitters for an aniseed note and a goodly amount of very dark rum. “Having a glass of Rum before breakfast doesn’t make you an alcoholic. It makes you a Pirate.” Jean LaFitte

M

I made my Perique snuff after letting it dry out. Ground medium coarse, added salt and sodium carbonate, just a titch, and it turned out real well. Dark and subtle with a very earthy tone. No other tobacco or scent added, just straight earth-tone taste.
