Ive used this for many years and love it.with my last order, i got another 50g tin and it was very different: the buttery aroma was super strong and it makes my mouth water. I almost want to scoop it out with a spoon and eat it,but i wont,BUT… ive been licking the crumbs off my fingers now and it does taste sweet in very small amounts, and becomes bitter in larger quantities. Im now frequently dabbing my finger into the tin and letting the residue dissolve on my tongue. I havent noticed any ill effects, but have three questions: 1. Is there any danger in dabbing it on my tongue for a taste.im not using it like a sweet scotch, just whatever would stick to the pad of my finger. 2. Because this batch was so much stronger than all others, is it possible WoS is adding flavouring/scenting it? I thought the toasting process brought out the natural nutty sweet buttery flavour in the tobacco. 3. Are toasts really “natural”? Or are contemporary toasts just a dehydrated scented fake of recipes long abandoned in days of yore? #3 bothers me a little because all these years, I somehow believed in the authenticity of HDT and now i wonder. Thanks for your thoughts!
Toasts are toasted tobaccos. The tobaccos they toast will vary from batch to batch, and from harvest to harvest. Not masking them with a scent will let these differences shine through. Some folks use nasal snuff orally, those that use it nasally end up with in their stomach anyway due to the natural nasal cleaning process, and Bob Gregory at Sam Gawiths sprinkles snuff on poached eggs and in chilli. Licking your fingers will be fine
@50FT_trad, i just really never had the urge to lick the crumbs off like this before…but this batch i got was just sooo buttery like a tub of movie house popcorn. So, as far as you know, HDT isnt scented? I really hope not, that would kind of disappoint me.
I don’t believe so @Chicago_CA I’m certain all the scent is from the leaf / blend, and how it’s processed. Unfortunately that toasted scent and the fine grind are a very real turn off for me, so I can’t share experiences. I bought a tin once and traded it away, and won’t be trying it again. Apparantly there’s one or two of the SGs which are of that ilk, and very moreish to fans of that style snuff. Again, I can’t expand on which those are, but I’m sure one of our other members will be able to advise better
Right, thx @50ft_trad . Its just curious that this batch leaned so heavily on the buttery side of the spectrum rather than the smokey side that it raised suspicion that there was something artificial at play here. Id be pleased indeed if its natural variation in plant & prep instead of manipulation by additives. : )
