I am almost out of my 50 gm bag of toque menthol and alas my tin of wilsons sm 500 has been empty for months, I have plenty of my homemade snuffs, some were good, others not so. My pumpkin pie spice, not so good, I tried using some rose petals, smelled like a gorillas back hair…real crummy. SO, now what to do with these,I am way too cheap to toss em. Dont want to have to use them, and to make matters worse now that I am disabled, the wife lost her job after 18 yrs, get this, on her anniversary there…how nice of em. So,I gotta try making a silk purse outta a pigs ear. I have found menthol crystals on amazon for about ten bucks for four oz, with shipping. My question is this, do i try this, or will it be a further waste of money? by the way, my toffee snuff still rocks as does my lemon snuff…my lemon/hops,jury still out…hops good for beer, not so much for the snozzola…

I bought some menthol crystals online and used them to give a light menthol flavor to a batch of homemade snuff. It worked pretty well. One tip: try to find out the precise species of mint used to make the crystals. The purest menthol is made from Mentha arvensis. Some of the crystals available online are made from Mentha piperita (a.k.a. peppermint), which will add a slight peppermint flavor. Not necessarily a bad thing, depending on your tastes, but it may be slightly disappointing if you’re looking for a pure menthol flavor and nothing else.

That is a lot of crystals you won’t want that much. A quarter teaspoon in a pound of snuff will be enough. Can you not buy it in a pharmacist you can hear in the UK and is only £0.50 for 5 grams.

I took some Tom Buck and stuck it in a container with a little chunk of camphor. Gave it a couple of shakes every day and let it age until it was the right intensity, then took the camphor out.

back in the 80s when my kids were infants, i got some menthol mint, to grow and it had purple stems. Alas the apt yahoos who weedwhacked around the townhouses took them all down to dirt except for a couple of plants grown indoors. i picked em and they were great. I kept the stems and put em in a tin and forgot about them for almost 6 months… I opened the tin to see what it held…WOW…MENTHOL smell big time. I never have found that kind again. If I could grow it i would. online have not had any luck to find that kind of peppermint…too bad. I will get some crystals and see what I can do…I LOVE menthol and want it really strong. I am a big fan of the old red tin with the snarling dr of Dr rumneys mentholyptus…I miss those days!

According to the Wikipedia entry, Mentha arvensis has pale purple flowers. I suppose some of that color could transfer to the stems. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mentha\\_arvensis

as a matter of fact it did have those. thanks for the info. I live about 25 miles from weston mo. here in the midwest usa and they have three tobacco barns there. one of them agreed to sell me some tobak and I shall indeed get some menthol crystals and the eucalyptus oil and camphor oil and try making some. I think I will make one oz batches at first til i get it right…in the meantime I will email burpee for the mentha arvensis seeds if they can supply them to me. thanks graybeard

You might just want to make sure you have the right kind of camphor. I’m pretty sure there could be a few types of it. Some may not be suitable for ingestion, I’ve had white camphor essential oil, as well as camphor gum, and I think some of the commercially product is synthetic, imitation camphor…

additonal not to be a jerk but it’s definatly important not to over do the menthol too much can damage the smeller. The stuffs strong a drop will do you.

If anyone looks at this old thread besides me, do you know if dried mint works to mentholize snuff? I have a bunch of mint someone gave me from their garden. It makes fantastic tea, so I was thinking of adding some to these foil packets of very old Poshel menthol Mix and Spearmint I have. They are so old they have no scent left, but other than thaty they are nice plain snuffs, slightly oiled, but only slightly. They look to be from the 1970s. No health warnings.

dried spearmint from healthfood store. Very powerful. Grind it in coffee grinder with the snuff that you don’t care for Could work. I use it all the time with pipe baccy for a nice spearmint snuff.
