I have to put some of the blame on the door of @Abraxas. Perfectly innocently, I asked about Patrick Collins’ snuffboxes, and he started giving advice about silver snuffboxes. He recommended Ari D Norman as one of the few modern producers of good snuffboxes. While even 12 hours ago, I was still saying I wasn’t in the market for such as yet, I nonetheless checked ebay for silver snuffboxes. I saw an Ari D Norman that I liked the look of, so I thought I’d put in a bid for 50 pounds (about $75) max, mostly expecting not to win it. But I did. This was just a few hours ago, so of course I don’t have it in my hands yet, but here is the vendor’s image: SOLID SILVER 2 FLYING CHERUBS ON RAISED ENAMEL SNUFF BOX I’m a complete novice with good snuffboxes, but an old hand at eBay, from my estate pipe days. I did compare it with the price of new items, and it seems to be just a bit more than half, so I think I should be happy. @Abraxas, thanks for your advice and input on this issue!

Nice find ,now you have to control your SBAD [Snuff box acquisition disorder] As you can tell I have chronic SBAD. But it’s all good ; I figure my investments will keep up with inflation and give a nice nest egg to my survivor’s, Along with my SAD cellar, PAD collection and tobacco cellar investments

now you have to control your SBAD …

Sigh. One of the reasons I was first drawn to snuff was that compared to pipe smoking, it seemed simple, cheap and requiring much less equipment. I think that apart from this one, I’ll keep on stocking up on the snuffhouse plastic boxes. Apart from the fact that the sliding opening thing often seems to break, they really are pretty good. I don’t think you need a LOT of silver snuffboxes. (Although I also remember swearing that I was going to stick to corn cob pipes … and maybe one nice meerschaum. And perhaps just one briar to see what all the fuss is about. And and and …)

I am on my second set of 5 plastic boxes, but that don’t stop me from buying ,when I see a great deal. Reminds me, I have to check if the bid I made are winners.

Great find! But looking at the pic I must say that that is most definately a women’s snuff box, don’t feel too bad I have one with a similar pic but mine is even worse (it has more flowers) ;

Haha. No problem. But in a world where taking snuff is already such an eccentricity, you can’t add too much more damage by snuffing out of a woman’s snuffbox. I’m just pausing to reflect where I would draw the line. Bunny rabbits, perhaps, or anything by Beatrix Potter. Romantic I can handle, cute would be a bit too much.

yes—i saw that one. i even put it in my watch list --for hell of it. very nice. i like the cherubs, myself. for the life of me, i can’t understand why a nice inexpensive snuff box can’t be made in the U.S.

Well, the box turned up. There’s a bit of a moral tale in from which other inexperienced buyers could perhaps learn. I know from buying estate pipes on eBay that you gotta pay attention to the size specs, it’s very easy to be mislead by images. So, I looked at the size specs on the eBay posting, and got out my snuffhouse and Mr. Snuff plastic boxes to try and visualize it. According to the posting, it should have been a bit narrower and longer than the snuffhouse box, and about the same depth as the Mr. Snuff box. That would work, I thought to myself. However, the actual usable depth of the silver box was quite a bit less than the Mr. Snuff box, really too shallow to be comfortable pinching from. It’s a pretty little box, closes nicely, well balanced – but I can tell I won’t be using it a lot on a day to day basis. I guess the moral is, if you’re buying from an eBay posting, don’t just check the size specs: Check the size specs really, really carefully.
