I’m new to snuff, and something recently occurred to me regarding its effects on the Ear, Throat, and Nose department, since all of these things are connected. I have an artificial ear drum in my left ear, and I’m concerned that snuffing will damage my eustachian tubes, or just otherwise hurt my ear system, since the nose and all of that are all connected. Right now I have fluid behind my artificial eardrum, but that started before I started snuffing. The doctor put a tube in my eardrum, and it feels like the fluid is gone now, but I’m wondering if I should stop snuffing until that tube is out in 6 months. Do any of you have any knowledge you can share regarding this issue? Are my fears unfounded? Thanks guys troop
I very much doubt snuff would make it far enough to get into your inner ear, but (despite my username) I am not a doctor. You are in a tricky situation, because the only way you can find out for sure is by asking your doctor. You can pretty much guarantee that a doctor will tell you not to use snuff because it is tobacco, whether or not it would actually affect your ear. I don’t know how you are going to get an honest answer from anyone who is actually qualified to give one.
The disclaimer to anything that follows in this thread should read:
I would be very hesitant to take medical advice from some dude in Texas named Roy who is typing on a tobacco forum while wearing no shirt or pants
I am fully clothed and live in SC…but you get my point All I can tell you is that I have pretty standard allergies and hey fever issues and I personally have never had a ENT problem related to snuff. If anything it provides a nice shield from pollen and so my allergies are actually helped by it. Oh then there are the times when I read a Basement Shaman post and I am tempted to revisit Dholakia White and that makes me sneeze…and cuss Beyond that my experience is that snuff is a non impact ENT entity. So…(hang on let me take my shirt and pants off)… you should be fine. I would however start with something like a Poschl Packard’s Club Snuff (nothing real fine, dry, or dusty) That way it will stay in the front part of your nose. Later when you get used to snuff you can try different grinds My 2 cents
This sounds like a medical question .My advice is never rely on the internet for answers. Unless they are a board of certified doctor who specialize in such matters. When in doubt do without ,consult a real physician on serious health concerns. I have gone deaf from antibiotics they won’t tell me which ones cause it or have any idea when or if my hearing will return. Doctors practice medicine and still don’t have answers. Withdraw only last three days once you get past that you’re good. Quit, don’t quit that is your decision. Snuff is generally safe unless you have a sneezing attack and hold your nose shut, I could see this could cause a problem at the speed of 40 mph up to 167 mph .
My doctor banned me from snuff for a lung problem I developed so I’ve been off it for several months now and I am no better than before I stopped. I have to see him about this soon. I switched to snus and that’s going ok. I sort of feel that I may even have improved had I continued using snuff. Anyhow this hospital lung “specialist” who from the first moment I met him seemed obsessed about quitting snuff does not inspire me with any confidence. Must be something else wrong with me but we may never get to finding out as his only idea seems to be to stop taking snuff which obviously to me is the wrong diagnosis but he doesn’t seem to have any other ideas. Fine snuffs would upset my chest now but that’s because there is already something else wrong with it. House dust aggravates it also if I disturb a lot or gloss paint fumes or 2nd hand smoke etc etc With your ear condition you could snuff and see how it goes. Any problems just stop but if you ask a “specialist” doctor I’m sure it you will be told to run a mile from snuff even if they have no idea what they are talking about as seems to be the case with mine. I’ll even bet he still bans me from using it even though I am no better. He’ll just come up with some more rubbish about it hasn’t been long enough as he did last time when I told him I’d quit for a short while and it had made no difference and even though I recovered in hospital while still taking snuff. It seems amazing how plain stupid these people can be. They just don’t understand facts or logic. If he does continue in the same useless vain I will have to go back to my GP to see if I can get some other treatment or see some-one not blinded by some useless bias. I could be better now if I had some-one not obsessed with quitting snuff who maybe addressed whatever the real problem is. I’m ok with using snus for now but I’d like my medical problem to be addressed by something more than prejudice and guessing. It’s pretty worrying that this doctor is a so called leading chest specialist. I certainly cannot attest to it. I may get quite irritated during my next appointment.
I’ve been wondering about this recently as I have had pain behind my ears and my adenoids have been swollen. So I put down the snuff. It has been 2 days and I’ve noticed an immediate improvement. I have no idea why or how the snuff could have caused it. I am going to follow up with my dentist to make sure I don’t have a hidden cavity or something that might be causing the swelling and pain in my adenoids but I think maybe I just need a break from the snuff for a week or two which is fine because I’ve been hitting it pretty hard everyday since the middle of March. Gotta listen to your body and do what it says.
With all due respect, a snuff forum full of snuff enthusiasts is a good place to ask questions about grinds, scents, and personal preferences, but maybe not the best place for medical advice on the effects of snuff on specific medical conditions. You really need to be speaking to medical professionals about this. They are not experts in everything and nasal snuff is uncommon, so they might play it safe to avoid repercussions later. If however you feel your doctor is not being objective about snuff or your personal medical situation, get a different doctor.
I think my doctor will now say. Continue to stay off snuff. He may accept the reality that I am not improving which to me means that possibly a year has gone by wherein I have had no accurate diagnosis nor effective treatment although I do have a steroid (not supposed to be for long term use) that can help to contain the problem but with potential long term side effects. My snuff use has basically been ruined by all of this. I can’t actually see me returning to using snuff unless I have some sort of meaningful diagnosis and/or treatment which gets me further along the line of recovery i.e produces a result. Probably my snuff days are over. My doctor may even claim that the damage has been done but that I still have to stay off snuff. I’m simply now experiencing I think what many patients do and that is simply any lack of progress with medical treatment. I will give my doctor a further chance but otherwise I will be seeking some alternative. Basically if you had a bunion on your toe the specialists will tell you to avoid snuff and it’s not only doctors. Joe public has strong opinions on it also. I know a guy who basically lives on beer and pie’s and looks it but has absolute contempt for anyone that takes nicotine, not even tobacco just nicotine and yet these people seem to be under some illusion that they live some yoga vegan lifestyle. He did have a heart attack. Even suggesting to some to smell a snuff scent in a tin almost makes them have a panic attack. My revised advice @troop111 is probably forget about snuff as it won’t be worth the hassle even if you would have been perfectly fine using it as any problem at all will no doubt be attributed to snuff and that advice I would say can be applied generally to anyone with any illness. Of course advice can be ignored. There is a choice. I’m actually starting to think that I just have Asthma though never had it before in my 49 years nor any of my family. My doctor did ask if I used inhalers as if he was considering this. I’ll see what happens tomorrow at my appointment. Maybe that my mother died of lung fibrosis has thrown him off looking at the obvious. He’s certainly had me worried that I might be heading for lung fibrosis and used this to scare me into stopping snuff. I’d actually be relieved to have only asthma.
Geeze I’m sorry to hear about the medical conditions you guys are dealing with (and have dealt with) Like I said, the fluid is out of my ear, I guess I’ll play the whole snuff thing by ear
@I_snuff_therefore___ Have you seeked out an herbal practitioner sometimes the best cures are found in nature.

How do you think pharmaceutical companies make new drugs, they find a compound in nature then try to reproduce it synthetically

I found this and I was wondering about it. http://www.herbs2000.com/herbs/herbs\_lobelia.htm Think I need to get some inhalers off the doctors for now, pronto and see where I go from there? I think it’s about time after having breathing problems for a year.
I sometimes have tinnitus when blowing the nose too often and powerful. But I don’t see it as a disadvantage of my habit. Every tobacco use form seems to have it’s side effects.
Just back from the hospital. Had a snuff. Screw em! I still don’t understand what it is that I really don’t understand or if I understand anything or if they understand anything (or if they give a damn anyway), about what is wrong with me? So pretty much standard appointment. Good news is that officially I am now a doctor as I got two inhalers just as I predicted after doing my own research. :-B
@I_snuff_therefore___ yes Lobelia AKA puke weed similar effects as tobacco I had researched this years ago when giving up smoking. In combination with mullein & coltsfoot herbs also two good herbs for respiratory ailments. Here are some others; http://www.greenearthherbs.com/xcart/pages.php?pageid=18
Thanks @basement_shaman. I’ll have good read through that. Got to pick up those inhalers tomorrow and I’ll see how they go. At the moment I’ve just been having a bit of a snuff fest getting out a few to try again. Been impatiently waiting on a delivery of Islay Snus so I got a craving for Mull of Oa and I think I actually like it more now than before because of the snus being a similar flavour. I’m praying though that they haven’t lost the delivery. Decided myself that not snuffing did not help infact I think I felt better before I stopped using snuff so now I’m satisfied that the doctor was only being cautious but that basically snuff does me no harm so I don’t see why I shouldn’t use it if I wish to. Maybe I’ll even start to feel a bit better as before. I’m not going to tell him though. That discussion is over. In a way I suppose the ban did introduce me to snus and I’m enjoying that but I like the option to take snuff and with snus I don’t have to overdo the snuff so even less chance of it doing me any harm but I still think I need to avoid the fine grinds although luckily Fields of Juniper and such are just inside the limit. Missed this Roslein I just tried. Just can’t get a snus like that. Some things are only for the nose.
@I_snuff_therefore___ you can bag your own snus http://chadizzy1.blogspot.com/2014/07/make-your-own-portion-snus-from-loose.html
Good vid in that link showing it being done @basement_shaman . Certainly may come in handy. Now if something could just hurry the post up (except me paying extortionate postage of course). I NEED MY ISLAY SNUS!!!
As using snuff dried out my sinuses and made it possible to breathe properly through my nose for the first time in my life, I’m wondering if it might actually help rather than hinder with regard to fluid behind your eardrum if it makes ot possible for it to drain away. Don’t take this as advice to keep snuffing though, I’m no doctor. The doctor who was, and still is a doctor who investigated and diagnosed the lump my ex-girlfriend said she could feel in her throat as ‘not really there, just psychosomatic due to stress’ on several occasions caused her life to be shortened to 39 years and 360 days, though.
