Dwolla

This looks VERY interesting to me, but I would love to hear your opinions. Second only to PACT and its supporters in my ranking of evil lies the credit card companies (and PayPal). Until now (possibly) a necessary evil. But now they have got to the point of dictating what we spend our money on, they have imho gone too far. Check this out http://www.dwolla.org and let me know what you think. They seem real according to the news articles: http://www.dwolla.org/help/dwolla-in-the-news/ If I signed us up as a company, and myself as a consumer, is it something you would sign up for as a consumer also? If not, why not - maybe you spotted something I didn’t. Thanks for your input trusted fellow-snuffers (I am not being facetious; your opinions are highly valued). Dave

That looks quite interesting. I suppose I’d use Dwolla to pay you Dave, with no concerns. Whether it gets accepted generally the way PayPal has remains to be seen, but it seems promising.

That’s how they pronounce “dollar” on Long Island. I will withold judgment on their legitimacy until I have time to digest this.

I would try Alert Pay, myself. As far as I know, they don’t have any restrictions on tobacco purchases, and are more established than dwolla.

We have this set up now. I just want to run a test from my own private account to make sure it goes smoothly. If it does then we’ll have it as an option for early adopters in the very near future. I don’t know if it is the anti-establishment in me, but I really want this to work. While it does gall that 5% of gross (yes) ends up going to the CC companies it is their nefareoius practices and their preaching that gets to me most. They do things like: 2.9% off the top; 35c per transcation; monthly fees. That’s bad enough, but if someone who is, by their abritrary decision, ‘high risk’ then they charge 4.9%. We don’t know a customer is high risk; the customer usually doesn’t know they are high risk; and big surprise the CC companies don’t tell anybody. The only way to tell is by looking through every individual transaction after the event. Not many people know this, and indeed I wouldn’t if I hadn’t heard about it on the radio. Back to Dwolla. It’s an easy signup process, just like PayPal. Verify yr bank account after you get two small deposits from them and that’s it. Fund it with whatever you think you might spend via Dwolla 3 days hence. When you buy something you enter your ID number and they instantly email you a code. Enter that and it’s done. Here’s the best part: it costs me the merchant 25 cents. You spend $20, 25c; $50, 25c; $500, 25c. Obviously as time goes on and more people use it then I start saving a more and more significant % in my costs, which I can then pass along to you. On $100, given the choice between sending the CC companies $.75 or giving you one or two tins of snuff…the choice is obvious. It also costs 25 cents to send money to any other private 3rd party. So if you pay any friend or relative via PayPal then this is something to consider. Last but not least, for the digital natives amongst us, you can pay via twitter, facebook etc. Again, I would be very interested if anybody has reservations and why. Maybe I am I am being naive. thanks, Dave

@shikitohno: I will take another look at Alert Pay. I looked at them a couple of years ago and thought they restricted baccy, but I may well be wrong.
