Dutch Windmill/De Kralingse Macuba

Macuba 12.5 grams Pure Virginia tobacco flavored with Cognac and Rose oil

(Moderator note: Original discussion edited/salvaged for posterity)

I got a tin of Macuba recently, and I can’t say enough good stuff about this snuff. The strange thing about it is, there is a flavor I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s described as having Cognac and Rose Oil, but there is certainly another elusive scent present. To me, it is like I can almost taste the windmill. I know it’s crazy, but it’s like the musky scent of an old boathouse. I’ve spent a lot of time at sea, both the atlantic ocean and the bering sea, and there is certainly something about this snuff that reminds me of those times. I admit I knew the story behind this snuff before it arrived, but I don’t think that’s what influenced my perception. Anyway, has anyone else experienced this reminiscent undertone note?

Ok, when you said you spent a lot of time at sea, I had to dig this out and take a pinch. Yeah, I’m getting something…I’m not sure what it reminds me of, but there is something I can’t quite put my finger on it. Most of the unique smells I’ve encountered on ships has been the various types of ropes and other odds and ends in the rope lockers. So perhaps there is something familiar from there. Mostly I’m getting spicy rose, but there is a “ropeyness” about it. Just had a massive sneeze… Wow, messy. What a fantastic snuff!

@ Xander That’s what I’m talking about, I think you probably helped narrow it down. Like I said, it is an elusive scent, but I think old hemp rope is a good description. But, there also seems to be a musk about it, like seawater drying on the rope, and bringing everything out. Do any of the other Molens have this undertone? I wanted to get the 1860 originally but the snuff shop was out when I placed my order. I’m still loving this Macuba though.

1860 is sort of ropey, its much heavier and darker though. Its actually more smokey than ropey. Still well worth getting. I like it a lot. Hollandse Bolangaro, which is very plain also has a bit of a ropeyness about it. Its very much like Macuba, I think, but without the added scents. I would check out snuff reviews to see what everyone else thinks. Of couse Jaap is the best person to ask. You may want to shoot him an email, or post a question to him here. I’ve not tried the full range of these yet, so I can’t speak for all of them, but so far they’ve all been great snuffs.

Hello snuffegnugen and Xander, It may all comes down to the type Virginia tobacco we use. Apart from the Cognac and rose oil only a little ammonia is added, which could not account for the type of scent you discribe. Jaap Bes.

Thanks Jaap, Nice to hear from the man behind the myth. Like I said about this note, it’s very subtle and kind of elusive. But, I also understand that it could be entirely in my head. We all have memories and experiences that influence our perceptions when it comes to tastes, smells, odors or whatever. For me there is certainly something about this snuff that reminds me of the fond memories I have of just hiding out up in the Foc’sle to get away from everyone for a while. And it could be the cognac or rose oil that sparks that memory, who knows. But, you probably spend a lot of time in your mill, so I would guess if there were any subtle scents present in the mill you would be very habituated to it. Anyway, I hope you scrolled to the beginning to see that I was certainly praising your snuff. The Macuba is the only one I’ve tried thus far, but I am looking forward to trying more of your snuff based on that experience. Keep up the good work amigo.

I’ll have to try that one. The smell of old ropes is awesome, which I could see getting into the snuff a little just by being around the right enviroment…

Old rope,mmmmmmmmmm…

I absolutely love Macuba, but I don’t seem to be getting the smell of old rope, and I hope it stays that way. LOL

Perhaps I’ve mislead you all. I don’t actually smell rope per se, but like snuffegnugen, I am reminded of something “ropey” that you get around some of the working gear on ships. My guess its just the tobacco. Is tobacco related to hemp, sisal, or manilla?

no tobacco is related to tomatoes, nightshade, jimsen weed, and belladonna. In fact the last three and tobacco have the same drugs in them but the concentrations are reversed so I repeat do not smoke nightshade, jimsen weed, or belladonna to get a nicotine buzz it will kill you first!!! Oh and tomatoes leaves don’t make a good substitute (although people have tried that, since they are related and stuff). Though if you do enough tobacco to kill most people who are on this list it will make you go crazy (for a little while, that is if you don’t have a heart attack). Though no relation to hemp or probably the other plants xander listed (I assume at least).
