As I mentioned in my introductory post, I’m not into snuff for the nicotine content - quite the opposite, actually. I know that this doesn’t make a lot of sense, but I’d rather remain addiction-free and enjoy the product without actually _craving_ it, so I’m trying to find the most effective technique. As of now, most of my “pinches” aren’t exactly that: basically, I pinch and release the snuff, so that my finger and thumb are pretty much covered with a “dusting” of tobacco, which I then proceed to apply to the nostrils etc. This way, I can certainly enjoy much of the flavor without worrying too much about the nicotine, and I’m generally satisfied. Recently, though, I’ve been trying to taste Toque’s Lime Toast and Whisky & Honey, finding that most of the aroma described by reviews completely escapes me - I only perceive a very enjoyable tobacco, with none of the undertones that I should be experience. Since this happens only with those, I am starting to fear that it’s my technique’s fault, that somehow doesn’t allow the full aroma to develop - even though my “dusting” actually allows me to keep the (very little) tobacco in my nose for much longer without forcing me to sneeze or blow my nose. Anyway, here’s my plea: if the above made any sense, is there someone willing to attempt my technique so as to confirm or deny my suspicion of aroma loss? I’d do it myself, but it’s hard to know what I should experience not having experienced it yet… =)
To get the full flavor, I have found you have to actually sniff the snuff. I have tried finger application, even some gadget to blow the snuff in, but for me at least, you really don’t get the full experience unless you sniff it in. So, try that, but try very small amounts. I have found for me, I just need a very small little “dot” on the back of my hand, to sniff, and I can get the flavors, and can do again if needed.
The flavour experienced is relative to the amount taken and the real experience of taking snuff combines the sensation of taking the pinch, the intense flavour that you get from that and then nicotine so in that sense you will never get the ‘best’ from it; it will be like sniffing beer or wine but not drinking it. If you are only after the aroma I’m sure there are more effective ways of doing so - lavender oil instead of lavender snuff for example. But, of course, each to their own. There is even a theory that one of history’s biggest snuffers - Napolean - just smelled the aroma without snuffing. Really though, you will only get a fraction of the aroma with your technique and I don;t see a way of improving on it to get what you want: I think the question is whether snuff can provide what you are looking for and on balance I would say not. Cheers, Nigel
@pgcd, I’ve been snuffing for more than 2 years already after I quit smoking. I take numerous big pinches per day but never crave for snuff like I did for a cigarette. Even when I wake up I do not have to have a pinch immediately. When I’m busy working, go to town or sit in a meeting, I do not snuff at all. So what I’m saying is, do not be afraid of getting addicted. If you stick to small pinches I’m sure it will never happen.
After a 20 year habit of smoking Camel Filters, I used snuff to help me quit. I bought my last packs of smokes at the end of February, with an occasional Prime time flavored cigarillo for the next couple months because I liked the taste, and now its been well over a month since I’ve had any sort of smoke. And I do not crave snuff, or the nicotine that it provides, I use it because I like the nicotine rush and the flavor, but I can go, and have gone, all day without using any. I’d not be worried of getting addicted to nicotine received through the use of snuff.
I too am unwilling to help you by trying out your technique on those toasts. Sorry pal.
Well, seeing the reaction I decided to go on and just try some bigger pinches, and… well, something must be amiss, because I actually get more of the tobacco and less of the “other” aromas, which isn’t what I expected. This also happens with the Raspberry, that I otherwise taste clearly (as in “the flavor and the tobacco base” ) with my technique - so I guess I’m doing something wrong anyway.
Just take it the way you like, that’s what we all do. Snuff is sometimes the same as Wine - people talk to much about it, instead of enjoying it
@pgcd, there is no wrong way of doing it. The way YOU like it, is the right way!! The only thing about snuffing is that you must enjoy it. @Micheltn, agree 100%
Absolutely, no wrong way to use something you paid for…
I’ll second what the chaps above have said about the nicotine and becoming addicted. I started using snuff last December having never smoked and never been addicted. I take large pinches and sniff them so they enter my nose however, I am not addicted myself. I have just taken my first pinch having been awake over 12 hours and just getting ready for bed. Yesterday I didn’t use snuff at all nor the day before that; so this is the first time I’ve used it in over 48 hours. Some days I can go through 5 grams, some days only half but I have never had any cravings at all. I highly doutb you’ll become addicted to nicotine using snuff. Still, as Snuffster said, there is no wrong way to use something you paid for.
Tell a lie, I have and do smoke the odd cuban cigar, still; I have no addiction. There have even been times where I haven’t used snuff for a whole week.
I am totally addicted to nicotine. If I didn’t have my snus, I would be snuffing like a mad woman!
All that said and done and agreed with, you can’t beat taking it the way its intended. personally I couldn;t care less about any health risks, after kicking a 30 year cig habit I’m certainly not worrying about snuff. Im just one of those that has to have tobacco in some form.
Addiction makes the world go round. If people only bought what they needed the economy would collapse. I’m doing my part for the economy.
I like being addicted to snuff. Its fairly safe by most means, and its way cheaper than smoking in the USA. Kinda hard to believe Camels are up to nearly 7 bucks a pack and i used to smoke 2 1/2 packs a day of them (almost 525 a month). I probably go through (a high estimate) 40-50g of snuff a month now and thats only about 10-12 bucks. Pretty significant money savings.
