Dry High Toast No. 20

I just started taking this Wilson’s stuff again, which I had gotten about six months ago, and I like it more than I did then. There’s like a bergamot-y kind of flavor, sort of like fine and powerful black tea. I’ve never tried any other varieties like No. 22 or anything. Has anyone else? If so, was it good? Also, does anyone know why the word “number” is abbreviated “No.” ?

I have tried No 22 and it is a fine ground, light tan snuff with a nice smoke flavour (sort of like a camp fire) and a good nose burn. Its one of those you want to snuff with your lungs full of air or you might inhale some of the very fine powder. I like it because it’s not wimpy.

I think the “D” stands for “Dark” as its not as dry as a tradtional toast, but it is much darker.

Hello Sfingle, Wilson’s of Sharrow make two different kinds of Dry High Toast - No’s 20 & 22. DHT #22 is a straightforward plain toasted snuff, fine, pale and nutty/buttery tasting, whereas #20 is a toasted SP, which is why you get the bergamot aroma. WoS have a huge array of snuffs; I think you’ll find that pretty nearly all of us here have tried a few. I have about 10, I think, including Lavender, Ice Licorice and Royal George, as well as the DHT’s. The word ‘number’ is pretty often abbreviated over here (the UK) as ‘No.’, I don’t really know why.

Hey guys have you ever seen this? http://www.rajek.de/shop2/product\_info.php?info=p3486\_Wilsons-of-Sharrow-Snuff---Irish-Toast-No-21.html

Yep. I have not had the No. 21 one though, its harder to come by.

not 22. it’s just a plain toast.

Here in the UK, until the Internet the # was seldom used, so number was shortened to No, or more correctly Nº. I hope this makes sense! Try printing High Dry Toast Number 20 on a small Wilson Tin LOL!

In Afrikaans “number” is “nommer”. The abbreviation for “number” is “No” and for “nommer” is “Nr”. Strange, as I would think it should be the other way round. I mean, there is no O in number. I’ve often wondered about this and now I will make a point of finding out why it’s written in this way

@bigblue1 - The toasted SP is the no. 20. No. 21 is a plain dark brown medium-to-fine grind toast. Regarding the abbreviation “No.”, I’d never really thought about it before. A google search reveals that it’s taken from the first and last letters of the Latin “numero” which is the ablative form of “numerus”. Apparently.

The idea of a toasted SP interests me. This will probably be on my next order.

I just ordered one.

Nice find Brad, i thought a little googling might do the trick; and also thanks toffeenose, how’s the lavender and iced licorice? Haven’t tried either and they sound delish (pardon my fagot-y abbreviations which I use from time to time, lol)! Also, nice find there ap, i was gonna start looking for the No. 21 right away, and now I don’t need to.

The Wilsons lavender is very soothing and one I buy in bulk

I can’t wait to try #20. It’s on the way from Northerner but I probably won’t get it until next Thursday.

@ Sfingle: No probs. The Lavender is well, lavendery. A pretty nice scent, fairly strong when fresh. The Ice Licorice is a bit of an acquired taste; the menthol is pretty intense, but the licorice flavour is good and comes through very well. I might be stupid, but it had never occurred to be to think about the No. 21 - yet another for the wants list!

What happened to No. 19?

I asked Wilson’s about the toast numbering a while back. They explained that originally all their snuffs were assigned a number in alphabetic order. The toasts retained their numbers as a way for the customer to easily distinguish them. They didn’t explain why the three toasts aren’t actually in alphabetic order though !

I got a sampler smashbox of this (Dry High Toast No. 20) with my last NicotineRush order. To me it isn’t anything like a toast (or at least not the ones I have had, the Toque ones, F&T HDT and WoS #22) to me it doesn’t seem to be a toast at all but is an SP, but an unusually okay or good one (I’m generally not a big fan of SPs) but this one, especially for some reason when I tap it from a bullet (as opposed to czech tool tip from smashbox to back of hand and no idea why that’d make a difference) really reminds me of McChrystial’s S’nuff (which was my first favorite snuff, but from my first order which also only consisted of all the QWS and Rockit Naked so the S’nuff didn’t have much competition). I don’t have any S’nuff on hand right now (used up the itty-bitty tin of it I had) to make a direct comparison of the two of them so its just from memory and nose I say that’s what it reminds me of. Since it reminds me of the S’nuff and its okay and even good, I will happily use this sampler up but since I’ve found a lot of things (including American scotches and indian snuffs and other stuff more suited to me) I probably won’t buy this one (or any more McChrystal’s S’nuff either).
