I’ve been snuffing for about two months now and, predictably, my usage has gradually risen. Over the last week or so I’ve noticed that the walls of my nostrils are quite sore and feel like they are drying out. I’m not sure what’s causing this. Snuff absorbing all the moisture? Blowing my nose too much? Too little? Is there anything I can do to relieve the symptoms or prevent it happening at all?
drink more water.
might also be something your noticing by paying more attention to your nose, could be allergies plus dry nose is common in the winter.
If my nose seems like it is blocked I will clean it with q-tips. This brings the moisture back to my nose quickly and clears the passage ways
I had only been using Toque snuffs as that was all I had. I noticed no difference in my “nasal health” with the Toque snuffs. I then got samples from two other members and then after sampling some of those, I noticed the dry, sore nose you speak of within a couple of days. I know Toque is supposed to be “natural” and maybe there is some other ingredients in the others that irritated my nose. Makes me not want to expand outside the Toque line. I have found Saline spray is helping.
I’ve noticed that if I take a lot of toast during the day, it dries out my nose. So, I swab it out, spray some nasal saline solution in there, and snuff more! Drinking water does help…just as the Doctors suggest when we have a cold, the water allows for mucous production to help flush out junk when you blow your nose.
I’ve had problems with having a dry nose for years, even before I started snuffing. Along with using a q-tip to clean and nasal spray to rehydrate, one thing that makes a big difference is coating the inside of your nose with a little vaseline every now and then, especially right before bed. It helps your nose to retain moisture and stay moist throughout the day.
I tried coconut oil inside my nose today and it worked wonders. All natural, nutritious and one of the best moisturizers you could use.
hmm, so maybe switching off to a schmaltzer would help?
@delphinkid Do you mean putting vaseline over the snuff in my nose or are you proposing that I stop snuffing for a spell? …Preposterous I say!
If I take toasts my nose dries up. If I take schmalzlers my nose is Niagara falls. All snuffs cause one or the other to varying degrees. Good nasal health is a separate isssue. Keep it clean and hydrated. If you get wounds, treat them with tea tree oil (external) and a *tiny* bit of vaseline for internal and external. A gentle swabbing with a saline solution, especially in the “pocket” - inner front septum of the nose, will do wonders. Don’t get snuff too deep and you avoid sinus/ENT issues. Gentle!!!
I have heard a lot of rave over coconut oil. A therapist friend of mine told me it doesn’t matter how you use it, just use it… so I poured some in my rum & coke and it turned into a coconut glob that was tasty
I use coconut oil all the time. It is great for the skin, a little bit goes a long way and I also take a spoon full of it a day.

Yeah, it really is amazing. I cook with it, brush my teeth with it, put it in my coffee, etc. now, i put it in my nose!
Thanks to everyone for all the advice. I have been taking more notice of my liquid intake and upped it a lot, plus started a nightly routine of cleaning out my nose with moistened cotton buds/q-tips, a spray of saline solution in each nostril and then a little Vaseline inside each one. It’s worked wonders! I think the constant changes in temperature that one experiences at this time of year (cold outside then going inside into centrally heated buildings and heated cars) was the culprit.
A doctor friend of mine just gave me a great product against dry/sore nose called Nozoil (I kid you not) one has a hint of menthol and there’s another natural one. As the name suggests the product is oil based - it is great but I would recommend flushing your nose out with water before use.

Where I come from Niagara Falls is rhyming slang for something completely different - took me a minute to pick up what you really meant
Niagara Falls is a waterfall, don’t see how you could have bastardized it to mean something completely different. As for rhyming slang just how are you getting Niagara to rhyme with falls? Does it rhyme in a different language or something?

Niagara Falls tends to get shortened to ‘niags’, so if you are ‘scratching your niags’ or have ever taken ‘a kick in the niags’…Niags = Niagara Falls = balls Long winded I know but rhymers get like that sometimes - and new ones come up all the time
I never got rhyming slang. Seems such a stretch and anything could be made to mean anything else. I’m an avid Jeopardy watcher, and do pretty well -home playing that is, and every now and then they have a rhyming slang category; it always leaves me scratching my head. After I hear the answer I’m even more dumbfounded. I always thought the point of communication was to make oneself understood. This is challenging enough without trying to add in something like that.
Like others, toasts seem to cake up with me. But it usually comes out in flakes almost, which is satisfying to me but horifiying to my wife if she’s sitting next to me. Not to be crude, but it’s like when you pull a decent booger out and it feels like it’s detaching somewhere up in your forehead. Sorry, that had to be said. Whether it’s related to snuff or not, my ears also produce alot of wax and there are some days when I can hear and feel something drop in my ear and, reaching up, find a decent chunk of wax. I don’t really know if this is normal or a sign of something wrong.
@Bart same here, except in your case the wax is probably due to a rogue bee colony that formed in your ear. Do you frequently hear a lot of buzzing?

You hit the nail on the head there Xander, the point of rhyming slang was so that others would not understand; the common theory is that it has it’s origins in the London underworld, so when discussing criminal activity it would not be so obvious what was being talked about. Nowadays though rhyming slang is not restricted to gangland and is often just funny. It can take a little getting used to but the context often gives it away pretty quickly. Some rhymers have just become so standard now that most people don’t even realise that they are using them eg. ‘Barnet’ is used across Britain for ‘hair’, but hardly anyone knows the origin - Barnet Fair = hair. (Barnet is a town where they used to have a horse fair) All fun and games but you’re right it is a bit of a stretch as they are not always obvious - for some reason though people still make up new ones.
I was usually way to dry in the mornings to snuff. I have found a couple of quick sprays of saline does wonders. Try to stay away from anything medicated(as in druged, not menthol and camphor-thats good stuff) as they cause chronic problems and dependence.
I read that if you put vitamin E on a cotton swab and gently coat your nostrils, it does wonders
I find scotches tend to make my nose dry and sore if I use them too much. Started feeling a little bit of it yesterday actually. The best way I’ve found to get things back to normal is to rinse my nostrils out in the sink a few times a day (head upside down under faucet and don’t inhale, let water clean everything out) and stay away from scotches for a couple days.
