Im recieving a free sample of Dr Rumneys Export from Tom at Nicotine Rush. Wondered what to expect from it? Has anyone here tried it? and what are your thoughts?

N

It is a pleasant mentholated snuff. I also received it as a sample, and enjoyed it.

L

I doubt if Tom is sending out samples of Dr. Rumney’s Export, which goes for $3.99 for 6.5 grams in the cool little dispenser. It’s the Dr. Rumney’s Exclusive Menthol, which is good snuff, but it’s not the same thing.

B

LHB is correct. Dr Rumneys and Rumneys Export are 2 different, although similar, items.

X

I’m guessing that the Dr. Rumney’s of South Africa is an imitation of the old Illingsworth Dr. Rumney’s Mentholyptus that is no longer made. Cany anyone comment on that? I keep losing on vintage tins of it on ebay Who makes this Dr. Rumney’s from South Africa?

C

Don’t know who makes it, but I know it’s damn good. It had been speculated that it uses the original recipe.

S

Don’t know about the Dr Rumney’s Exclusive Menthol, but Swedish Match S. Africa do the Rumney’s Export.

X

Ok, so Rumney’s Export is made in South Africa? What else does SM S.A. make then? Leonard Dingler is Swedish Match no more, correct? I’m helping dajawu (Al) to update and otherwise clean up Snuff Reviews, so this kind of info is helpful.

C

Both Rumneys are made in SA by different mills. Tucky is also made in SA (I think).

S

@ Xander; I think the Hedges L260, J&H Wilson’s, Singletons Menthol and Kensington English Menthol. There will be more! My Rumney’s, Singletons and Kensington says imported by Arnold Andre, with the Tobacco Warning in German.

X

Ok. I’m getting confused. I thought the J&H Wilson and Hedges were owned by Imperial. The others I have no first hand experience with except the South African Singleton’s which I thought was made by Van Erkoms. The German (formerly English?) Singletons, yes is Arnold André. Are they not made in Germany?

S

@ Xander, I may be the one confusing you! Don’t take my word as gospel as I’m an old git! Think we need ermtony to sort it out…

E

Who? Me? I’m still struggling to work out who owns what, who produces what and where what is produced! Confused? You will be

C

My best guesses: Made by Imperial, made in the UK: Hedges, JH Wilsons. Made by Swedish Match, imported by Arnold Andre, made in South Africa: Rumney’s Export, Kensington, Singleton’s, Tucky, Alpen Prise. Made by someone, made in South Africa: Rumney’s Exclusive Menthol.

S

I think Pieter Claassen makes then all.

X

LOL Snuff Head. You are probably right! That was my understanding as well (what Cstokes’ wrote) except I thought they were made in Germany. I guess where they are made is not pertinant. It seems somewhat pointless to even have a Swedish Match category at Snuffreviews (or anwyehere) since all of those are (or should already be) in the Arnold Andre category. The Dingler ones remain in it currrently, surely they can have their own as well. That leaves nothing under Swedish Match itself. Then there’s the question of where to fit in the oddball Singletons from South Africa and those others that turned up recently (like the Dr. Rumney). Pieter had told me some came from Van Erkom’s. That may be Arnold Andre’s equivalent in South Africa. I guess I have to wait for him to come back from vacation. If anyone else has info/suggestions, please chime in.

A

In a similar vein; who makes Jaxons?

C

Tis a secret.

J

Free Sample: Dr Rumneys Export That was copied and pasted from my reciept, so idk if he made a mistake or if im actually getting a free sample… but either way from what you guys are sayin both are good snuff’s.

J

im not sure, I think so, but it was in a black crush box so i couldnt be 100% sure

P

a relative of mine bought me a tin of DR. RUMNEY´S Mentholyptus Snuff in UK… i thougt it was an english company

X

@ Prisemaster: If you have one from England, that is the original, and not the South African one or the Rummy’ Export now made by Arnold Andre. I think it has not been made in 20 or more years.

C

Isn’t Mentholyptus different than the Export? The export was sold in Germany back in the early 80’s, same packaging as it is today.

X

Dr. Rumney’s Mentholyptus: made in England by Illingworth. Bought up by Imperial, recipe either sold to Swedish Match or they ceased production before that. Rumney’s Export: I think this also used to be Illingworth, but currently Arnold Andre or Swedish Match own the recipe and Swedish Match makes it. Dr. Rumney’s Exclusive Menthol: made by ??? in and for South African market, brought to USA by Mr. Snuff and sold from bulk. I’m still confused, but that’s my best guess. Swedish Match and Imperial and Arnold Andre all own parts of each other’s companeies.

A

You have it. All the Rumney’s were originally made by Illingworth’s. The brands have ended up juggled around as different firms are amalgamated or go out of business.

X

Sorry: Rumney. I make that spelling error often. I even say it wrong in my head. Edited to correct.

A

The originals were in beautiful, snuff box like, flip top cans with a picture of the good doctor on there. You wouldn’t have wanted him to treat you; he looked like the kind of doctor that earned his money by bleeding horses and pulling teeth.

P

South Africans can only make roughneck stuff!! The only Tucky made in SA is what I make. Jokes aside, I will follow up on this issues and let you all know.

X

@ Filek: good find! Where did you find it? I think if Illingworths was still around today, Van Erkoms might have a law suit on their hands. I find it very unlikely that Van Erkoms bought the original recipe from Illingworth. Imperial Tobacco probably owns it now.

E

I think you’re right Xander - the Illingworth’s name etc now belongs to Imperial.

M

I can’t for the life of me remember where I got this jpeg, but here’s a selection of the ones from Illingworth.

P

I have one of those original rectangular tins exactly like the top center one, but in better shape. I found it in my truck. I had it in an emerency kit that I never needed to open untill about 3 years ago. WoS menthol plus is very similar in taste and nic hit.

_

Todays Export dose not compare to the Plus+ I remember from the 80’s. I still have a tin of the same pictured above that has about 2 gr. in it but cant get it open and don’t plan on using any anyway. Just a good looker ater thing on the nic-nac shelf.

P

agreed

A

Thats the old tin I used to love, possibly the best looking but least practical tin ever. Although it was a metal flip top like a snuff box they were completely un-airtight, but nice snuff history.

X

Lucky you! Do I read “Namibia” on the Maverick tin? Did you get one yet?
