Hello to all, I quit smoking analog cigs a few years back and started using ecigs exclusively for the last three years. It has become such a pain to prep clean and maintain all my hardware that I have been looking for alternatives. I just happened to watch a "how it’s made " show on Discovery that featured snuff and it piqued my interest. Now…I said all that to ask these questions, in the video the maker mentioned that they use a mixture of potash lye and ammonia on the leaves to keep it from molding and I’m a little worried about putting those things in my nose. Do all manufactures use this method and has anyone had any adverse effects? I have never tried snuff, but am excited to give it a go. I plan on ordering the Toque 10 pack sampler to start off with and have read some other posts about “Toasts” and “Scotches” but I’m not understanding a lot of it. Should I stay away from these types? Sorry for the long post and much thanks in advance for any help/advice you guys can give.
welcome Cooramore…just read appropriate topics and you won´t miss the target…
Yeah, there’s a lot of info here. The Toques are chemical free, and good stuff. You probably want to avoid the scotches made int the US for quite a while at least due to strength and I think they do often have some chemicals, but I’m not the best guy to advise on those. There are quite a few good for a beginner, some will recommend some of the Poschl’s, such as Gawith Apricot, President, Ozona Raspberry etc. As well as many from Wilson’s of Sharrow. There are some discussions about this here.
@Cooramore I’m new to snuffing too, and can recommend the Ozona Raspberry that @Mr_O mentioned. It’s a very easy going snuff, perfect for us noobies! It doesn’t have a very good reputation amongst users here, from what I can gather, but they are (mostly) long term, highly experienced guys who demand a lot more from their snuffs. It’s a great intro, but be prepared to progress on to other things soon after.
Agree with above but just a couple thoughts. Mr. Snuff offers a beginners bundle which really is a good way to start. Nice variety of styles and at a decent price range. The scotches and the whites are not generally a good starting point for newbies. Not that they are bad, they are great! But the grind is so fine and the formulation is so dry that it is very easy to get it where you don’t want it which can be a real turn off. As odd as it may sound to you, some of the additives you mentioned can also enhance the experience. At least some of ‘the burn’ folks write about can be attributed to them. Welcome to the wonderful world of snuff. It can be a bumpy road at times but believe us, it is well worth the trip!!!
Air is bad snuff is good mkay
Thanks guys for all the advice. Ordered the Toque 10 pack and the Ozona Raspberry. Can’t wait till they come in and I can try my first snort.
“Lye” is a very deceptive term and it is used to cover a wide variety of products… e.g.; The lye used to cure lutfisk (Norwegian dried cod) is birch ashes.
Just to throw my hat into the ring, my piece of advice would be this: Don’t throw out snuff you don’t like or can’t take properly. It’s been over a year since I started snuffing, and some of the snuff I thought was foul in the beginning, or was simply too difficult to take, are now my favorites. Your nose will adapt and get better at picking out the scents in snuffs, and you will get better at taking fine snuffs. Find ones you like. If you dont like them, seal them and poke them in the cellar for a while and come back to it every few months.
I thought I knew quite a lot about snuff, but some of these guy’s are scary! Just sayin…
ammonia is probably in your gut right now in small amounts, it happens when you eat say blue cheese… nothing to fear here I don’t think.
Snort? A rough, noisy sound made by breathing forcefully through the nostrils, as a horse or pig does. A drink of liquor, especially when swallowed in one gulp. The liquor or drug so taken. To breathe noisily and forcefully through the nostrils. b. To make a sound resembling noisy exhalation. To make an abrupt noise expressive of scorn, ridicule, or contempt. NO,NO,NO, we don’t snort,we sniff or snuff or inhale lightly. So much to learn ! you’ve come to the right place. 11 tins your going to need storage jars.possibly a snuff box or two and other accessories. if you can’t find what your looking for ask. And welcome aboard! Snuff has no flavor or taste unless your using it orally.Snuff has a scent or unscented.
What @basement_shamen says re: snort… You only need to get the snuff up to the mucus membrane in your nose. Most will agree that if the snuff gets into your sinuses, it’s gone too far. Of course… some of us with deviated septums (myself included) have to snort just to get it that far!
@Whalen… Does that include me?? If you’ve never had lutfisk, just think of FISH JELL-O! GREAT stuff!!
My personal reccomendation would be to place an order similar to this to get a wide variety of snuffs. -A schmalzler (not in a tap box because they tend to dry out) such as Poschl Schmalzler D Doppelaroma -Viking dark (which is a reasonably fine moist grind, easy to take and high on nicotine). -A menthol such as Wilsons SM500 or Poschl Ozona President or if you want an excessively strong menthol for mixing or clearing up sinuses Wilsons Dynamite -An SP such as Samuel Gawith No1 High Mill -A toast such as Fubar Grunt or Wilsons Irish High Toast #22 -Purchase a floral or fruit scented snuff if you find one to be really calling your name; I found that overly flavored snuffs are to irritating for my nose personally. A word of advice on purchasing snuffs: I have found that buying 25g sealed tins is much better than small tins or tap-boxes for true flavor. The tap boxes dry out too much and don’t represent the snuff well. I wouldn’t worry about the ammonia/lye, if you get a snuff that smells to much like ammonia when you receive it leave it out for an hour or so to air out. Also, don’t be afraid to mix your snuffs. I would purchase a couple of the snuffhouse.org snuffboxes from mistersnuff for mixing/convenience. If you find a snuff too hard to take you can always add some of an easier snuff to mix. I find the back-of-the-hand method the easiest. Just take an almost full breath first, and take tiny snuffs through your nostrils to propel the snuff into the front part of your nose but not your throat. You will master the technique over time.
Grunt is not a toast. I used a spoon for a long time but as my pinching method improved and my nose acclimatised, I only pinch now. It offers the best control. Try the back of the hand method for scothes, toasts and white snuffs and you’ll only have a bad experience. Learn to pinch and learn to take large pinches. It really is the best method of all.
Just to throw my hat into the ring, my piece of advice would be this: Don’t throw out snuff you don’t like or can’t take properly.
Plus if you throw the tin out, you may buy it again not remembering you didnt like it!

I just found out I have one of them thar deviated septums. Not entirely sure I know what it is. And why wasn’t I warned?
I have a deviated right septum. Its pretty common. You’ll just need to sniff harder with that nostril and, in my case at least, that nostril becomes clogged up much more quickly than my non-deviated septum nostril. It’s nothing to worry about.
Its been over two weeks. Still havent received my order. Getting edgy
