Howdy! How come so many non-dippers refer to “TASTE” when talking about snuff? When you stick it in your nose, snuff is clearly an olfactory/aromatic sensation to be SMELLED!
@howdydave I asked the same question and got some answers that mad a lot of “sense”. http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/5005/why-flavour-and-not-scent-or-aroma/p1
Thanks for the ref. Howdy! Looks like John Deere may have come the closest with: “I think a lot of it is due to most snuff being “engineered” to smell exactly like they are supposed to taste and since it smells the way we would expect it to taste we just say it that way” But… most of flavour is really a combination of smell and taste (more smell.) One mustn’t confuse “flavour” with “taste.” Just about everybody has experienced the sensation where fool loses most of it’s flavour when their head is totally congested.
Yup… That’s right… You’ve got ANOTHER semantics knit-picker!
Of course one can taste snuff. When you inhale, the “snuff effected” air passes through the back of your mouth (that’s where your tongue is situated). The tongue is the organ responsible for tasting (that’s where the tastebuds are situated). So, no big deal!! I smell AND taste my snuff, don’t know about you Davyhowd!!
In any case, I think saying “taste” is easier than saying “smelled.” That’s why I use taste.
i think the two are too connected and symbiotic to argue about. Semantics schemantics…
Semantics schemantics!!! Of such trivia come wars! Think of the consequences of somebody telling a gentleman to “duff his hat” rather than to “doff his hat!” Why man… It would be pistols at dawn!
I can say with certainty that when I took my first pinch of Cheese and Bacon today, I definitely tasted it. My mouth actually started watering.
Yes Dave, but in this case, how do you name the taste of a smell in english?
Ok, smelled…well name.
@Howdydave: I am not that proficient with words. Is a duffer the same as a wanker?
A wanker is an onanist, self abuser, devotee of lady palm and her five lovely daughters, call it what you will. A duffer is an amiable old soul. Taste and smell are, of course, linked. That’s why you can’t taste anything with your nose blocked up.
