Does snuff lose its nicotine potency if it dries out?

I was just wondering, because I have a few tins of snuff the have dried out. Thanks in advance.

I have wondered the same, and I would really like to know from a adequate source. I believe if a snuff stings it doesn`t mean it has high nicotine levels? But I am a ex smoker and have never felt the buzz from snuff nor snus. I can get it sometimes from a pipe without inhaling and get the feeling that I am “full & satisfied”.

Simple water loss will not reduce the actual amount of nicotine, although dehydration could possibly influence nicotine availability with some snuffs. Aromatics are lost with the water and you could argue some nicotine might be, but it would be a miniscule amount. The ‘sting’ (or burn) is more to do with the effect of dry snuff on the mucus membrane, which can be wrongly perceived as being because of the nicotine. I think a pinch of dry snuff burns more because it gets inhaled, in effect, as a stream or jet rather than as the clumps which you get with a pinch of moist snuff - which is why large pinches of moist snuffs are easier to take than small ones. It’s about the surface area of the pinch. So, the burn is down to the body of the snuff, the make-up, amount taken and your personal tolerance. I always get a ferocious burn with certain snuffs that are not particularly strong. You won’t get much of a buzz with snuff unless you have a very low nicotine tolerance - snuff users tend to get their nicotine requirements through regular pinching - when you find the right snuff and the right amount to use for you, you can get all the nicotine you need. Stating the obvious here, but the amount you take is key to this - too little and you just get the aroma

Thanks Abraxas! I learned quite a bit from your post!
