Does snuff go bad

Does it? I purchased a 25g sachet of Pöschl’s Gletchersprise and poured as much as it could fit into a wooden snuff box. About half of it remained and I left it in the sachet ‘sealed’ with a bulldog clip. Well, after sterilising a couple of jars yesterday, I poured that remnant into them to-day and I noticed the smell had changed: the menthol scent is still there but now there’s a musty smell to it too. Anything I should worry about? Does snuff get mouldy? I ordered yesterday a couple of Bernard’s Schmalzers and they come in their own dispenser boxes. Is it safe to leave it there or should I transfer them to clean jars as well? TIA

Yes snuff can mold and go bad. Where I live it dries out to powder that leaves a unpleasant burnt feeling in my nostril. Some dry snuffs may be years before you could consider it bad. The Poschl’s im guessing is moist? It is not one I have had. I keep my Bernards in the fridge, as well as any other thick schmalzlers. Dry English, American, and Indian ones stay out on a shelf. So, your environment can make a change in the storing. I like to leave the snuff in the containers they came in until they are used. Usually I go through 1 of Bernards tap boxes every 10 days using it only at night, I have a ceramic flask it is decanted into. And I top off my daily snuff box with De Kralingse every few days. Thats about it for me. There are some previous threads on the subject of storing. Some people decant everything into small glass jars. I guess that depends on what you have available, as well.

Hi, coreymillia! Well, according to MrSnuff the Gleitschersprise’s moisture rating is ‘medium’. It definitely doesn’t look dry. I didn’t want to touch the snuff I poured onto jars, but the one I have in the box doesn’t feel dry.

Snuff does not go bad…people do Its my NRA theory of Snuff longevity ;>)
