Dear friends, here is a question from a rather recent, but fervent snuff user: Is it possible, that Snuff turns bad? In a tin of Sir Walter Scott’s Moro Moro, which I had not used for about a month, but which I only received about two months ago, I saw traces of some grey substance that looked suspiciously like mould, when I opened it yesterday. Would this be possible after such a relatively short time? Or could this be something else? Thanks for your opinion and/or advice. Rudolf
Alas, it is probably mold. Best to dump it. It’s generally suggested to store most artisan snuffs in the refrigerator.
extra flavor is always good go for it
For all its many fine qualities, SWS does seem to be particularly susceptible to mould. Sir Johnny recommends that you store open tins in the fridge.
Thanks, @Mouse , @RedDevil and @JakartaBoy for your help. I will see to get a small hotel fridge, so that my snuff will not smell like tomato and cheese…
SWS has going moldy several different ones Creme de figue; Auld Alliance, Moro Moro. Johnny had replace mine in the past. Decant what you’ll use and freeze the rest.
Sir Walter Scott snuffs are a gift from the snuff gods, and it’s a small sacrifice to store them in the fridge, with small amounts decanted into small tins, vials or a snuffbox to warm up and enjoy. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I don’t use any chemicals in my snuff…other than sea salt and a pinch of sodium carbonate…and very little of those. The sad fact is tobacco and mold love each other. Here in burley country the mention of blue mold is enough to make farmers cry. The best preventive measures in moist prepared tobacco are sorbates. There’s nothing inherently wrong with them, other than from a philosophical perspective. I’d rather not use them, so I don’t. I won’t stop buying and enjoying Johnny’s, Nigel’s, Roderick’s and Jaap’s beautiful snuffs. I just found someplace else for my beer to make room in the cooler.
@basement_shaman thanks, yes, Johnny was very kind and is sending me a new tin
@Roderick @chefdaniel Thanks to you both. As you can see and read here, I am still rather new to snuff and am in a learning process, which is very steep thanks to a bunch of people like you here. One of the best sites on the internet!
