How wonderful to have real snuff again! My friend’s brother in law came to Qatar from London, and so I of course seized the opportunity to request some snuff, last minute. He managed to get me some Wilson’s, all favourites, as well as a tin of Poschl. My only reservation is that I remember reading something about the Germans using lard in their snuff. I strictly don’t eat pork or its desrivatives for religious reasons. Even if they no longer use lard, would any of you happen to know if the machinery currently used is the same as it was when they DID?
They do use some fats of some sort. I do respect your religious reasons, but look at it this way. It isn’t consumed. It’s in the snout, then later blow out.
They use food grade paraffin oil these days and have done for years.
What Ermtony said.

In Poschl’s literature, they only mention using clarified butter (ghee) in their Schmalzer snuffs. Other sources indicate that this was standard practice with other manufacturers as well. Lard was only used in homemade Schmalzer. I believe that Bernard’s actually made a dry “Schmalzer” for the consumer to add their own lard to.
Wow, so they NEVER used lard to begin with?
I think I hear that “Colombia OL” calling me from downstairs now lol
The snuff I was brought is Gletcher Prise.
Enjoy.
Lard is pigfat. Can’t think offhand of a snuff that includes it. Maybe Toque Pigfat SP. Maybe not.
They do not use lard (pig fat derivitave). Butterschmalz (for schmalzler) is of cow milk origin, and is similar to ghee. However, no German snuff maker uses any oil of animal origin presently, and have not for decades (maybe many many decades). It is illegal to do so becuase the oil can go rancid. All oils currently used in German snuffs are food grade synthetic oils such as the paraffin or Columbia oil or white oil. @snuffgrinder Bernard may have done so in the past, but currently Sternecker offers a dry schmalzler to which one may add their own butterschmaltz or lard. Its called Echt Fresko Ungefettet (ungreased).
I don’t think Toque Pigfat SP would sell but, I said that about Toque Cheese and Bacon.
I’ll have a pinch of Cheese & Bacon on that!!
lol
‘Ungefettet’. Whay a lovely turn of phrase our Teutonic brothers have. Forget Toque Pigfat Roderick. Lets just have a Toque Ungreased, for those who wish to lard their own.
