Does bulk in bags put you off?

O

Perhaps it’s just me, but the thing that puts me off buying Toque in bulk is that it’s packaged in bags. Id much prefer air-tight plastic tubs, like WoS’s bulk.

W

That’s exactly the thing that puts me off buying Toque in bulk. Stefan

N

get some mason jars they are cheap and work great. It doesn’t bother me that they come in bags since I smoke a pipe and ALL bulk pipe baccy comes in bags so I have an arsenal of mason jars.

S

Their bags are sealed ZIP locks inside another ZIP lock. Stays perfectly fresh.

W

It ships well, keeps the cost down, and I look forward to finding just the right sized and correctly gasketed jar to store it in. I have over a half dozen bulk jars of Toque, to me, it is the absolute best way to enjoy snuff, and it stays perfectly fresh for years in glass. I have a 400 Gram jar of Whiskey and Honey that I think has only gotten better with time. The WOS plastic tubs are sexy, and do a great job, but do not ship as well. I have had two cracked ones upon arrival in the USA. They are great for long term storage with a little vinyl tape added around the lid. But I keep all of my bulk in a giant humidor cask at 65% relative humidity at 60 degrees. I use a super thick plastic cask made to hold 75 pounds of pet food, has a killer threaded lid with a silicone gasket, it’s Purrrrfect! (Thank’s Petco!).

O

@walrus1885 same here. There are loads of Toques I want to buy in bulk but not in bags. Proper casing or nothing at all. Soz rod, but may be this will make you think about providing proper containers for your bulk.

O

I wont buy bulk in bags. Ever!!!

C

The money he saves on containers probably outweighs the lost bulk orders. @Whalen: Is it like this one: http://www.petco.com/product/14938/Gamma-Vittles-Vault-Pet-Food-Container.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch

O

Rod will never get my bulk custom whilst he supplies in bags. I love Toque and am quite happy to pay more for half decent containers. I’ll never ever ever buy bulk in bags!!!

C

Ok, we get it, you won’t buy in bulk bags. Mason Jars are more attractive than plastic tubs, I know someone who hoarded Toque Quit in Mason Jars and then buried the jars in his yard.

B

I reccomend it. if you have another container to put it in. A bulk bag and a bullet is a happy union in my opinion.

C

@Bob: I’m not sure what the big deal is. Toque’s bulk is sold in economy bags to save the consumer some $, if it is that big of a deal, just buy a container.

X

You stay out of my yard, Stokes!

C

Ah, you do it too? Now I know two people that have snuff buried in their yard… and I have google earth. That last jar of Grand Cairo shall be mine!

X

Yep, I’m fine with them in bags. More than fine, it works out better for me. Oscar, I can sell you some jars to put bulk Toque in. They’re of excellent glass and have tight sealing plastic lids. My Toque is airtight!

O

Expressing my own wish to Toque: Rod, please supply all flavours in 100, 250, and 450g tubs pretty please.

O

Ps I’ll happily pay a little extra for good air-tight tubs.

X

I’m sure he would for you, why not write to him directly?

N

then why don’t you pay a little extra and get an airtight glass jar, glass is better than plastic for long term storage anyway.

C

@n9inchnails: ^5 bru!

O

Fair points. I just prefer the idea of snuff arriving in the post all ready to stick in the fridge without having to bother about Mason jars. Perhaps I’m just being selfish.

O

And lazy

P

I’ve bought quite a lot of bulk from Roderick and store it in glass jars. No problem, stays fresh for ever !!

C

@OscarWabbit: Instead of making another post directly after your first, please edit the post, it helps keep the thread a little cleaner.

R

I thought the idea of bulk was to save as much on packaging as possible. Empty bag into jar. Pretty easy.

O

@cstokes4 soz. Fair enough. Perhaps I need to get my head around using Mason jars.

B

I appreciate the savings with bulk bags and I don’t have any problems with transferring them to a good solid jar with a tight seal. Tubs can be a bit leaky sometimes and I’ve had a couple arrive cracked as well. I would like to find some old timey ceramic jars to put them in. Just adds to the experience, IMO.

C

@OscarWabbit: thanks! +1 on the ceramic jars, pottery prices sure have gone up lately. Mason Jars are the best bet, even better than plastic tubs. If it is good enough for food, it is good enough for snuff.

O

Ok. This is why I’m a member here - to be better informed about snuff. I’ll go out tomorrow in search of Mason jars.

X

@Bodger: do a search on ebay for “Snuff Crock” Bulk snuff used to be sold in earthenware crocks. Weyman and Demuth are pretty common names. Sometimes the antiques can be quite expensive. Demuth actually still makes replica ones. I would not trust them for actual storage though.

W

@cstokes4 - Yes that is the one! I have a large one for storing tobacco, works perfect with humidification crystals, had it for three years now. I have bulk snuff and 15 pounds of tobacco leaf for the wife’s smokes in there all the time, I have found it to be a great system with little maintenance. The smell of moist tobacco laden air when opened is wonderful. And oddly enough I have a small one that keeps the dog food perfeclty fresh also. These things are virtually indestructible, I use one on my boat to keep as a ditch bag.

C

Pretty affordable as well!

B

@ Xander: Thanks, I’ve tried “Snuff Jar” but I get other things as well with that one.

W

Amazing how this thread took off! I can see wanting a more substantial package for snuff, but tubs just cost more and are fragile, and glass is the best container of all, nobody would ship snuff in that. I found that the smaller 260 gram tubs from Wilsons are nice, but needs a gasket still. The softer plastic of the 450 gram tubs works well with a vacuum sealer, they collapse and there is no remaining air pocket. I use an excess length of bag which allows me to decant and reuse the same bag again in the sealer, my two year old Queens extra strong seems as fresh as I received it. All of my bulk snuff has remained in great shape over time. Nice thing about Mason jars is the ability to choose one to fit the amount of snuff and keep the air space to a minimum. I use the mason jar adapter that came with the vacuum sealer and get a negative pressure seal every time. Learning to store snuff is time well spent IMHO.

W

@Bodger - are you a true Bodger? I have several friends who are! They are rebuilding a trebuchet at the moment. They were part of the Timber framers guild who built the Treb in Scotland for the PBS segment. Crazy bunch of guy’s, one is a snuffer. One is a full time Bodger who has a sapling lathe in the forest.

B

I am not a Mason, but I have used and/or buried a couple of their jars. You’ll notice the Mason Jars selling cheap here soon in the Spring and Summer. Roderick is keeping his prices down for us. AND a plus…I have seen plastic containers of snuff arrive to a person totally smashed (Remember a photo of OTD 's shipment!!) That will NEVER happen with a double-bagged snuff shipment. Speaking of “double-baggers”, it’s been a long time since I’ve had one… Hate to say Oscar, but almost everything you buy was once either wrapped in plastic on a skid or split out and rebagged from a bulk shipment. It’s the ways of this ol world.

S

I’ve taken heed of the advice in the latest storage thread and treated myself to 5 small jars of Marmite, I’ve been having Marmite on toast for breakfast and supper for the last 3 days now. Luckily my girlfriend claims she fell in love with me because I’m eccentric so she hasn’t even batted an eyelid at my new Marmite habit. When I’ve consumed the contents I’m going to store some bulk WoS Camphor and Mild in them. At this rate in about 3 months time I should have enough Marmite jars to store all my bulk favourites.

C

Now THAT is dedication. I’m not hardcore enough to take down 5 jars of marmite for the sake of my snuff!

R

@Bart, I recently had a “double-bagger” and it was outstanding! Kinda like a moped…fun to ride…until your friends see you on one!

B

LOL Rans!, that’s one of my favorite jokes, haha!

J

I really need to get some jars! I recently got a large order of snuff and have had fears of my snuff spoiling/drying out. I put them all into small zip lock bags, and then put the small zip locks into larger zipped freezer bags according to snuff type. One for schmalzlers, one for toasts, etc. I don’t think the scents will intermingle since they are all in their own sealed bags…at least I hope not. I see no problem with Toque selling bulk in bags. Sure it may not be the prettiest looking thing in the world but as others have mentioned it keeps the price down and if somebody is going to order a bulk ammount of snuff then one would assume they know a thing or two about storing it properly…

B

@Whalen: I am not a true bodger, but I would love to learn the trade. I picked up the nickname several years ago and use it for games and forums.

E

@Xander how much are you selling the jars for?

X

@EricHill78 Do you want crunchy, creamy or clean? http://arrowheadmills.elsstore.com/view/product/?id=12279 I’ll sell them for $2.00 less than the posted price. I’ll add $1.00 if I have to empty them first.

R

How many grams fits in the mason jars of a particular size? I want to order bulk but am not sure what size to get. That and the lack of snuff boxes is whats holding me back.

R

Not sure rdunnion, but I know a 400g bag will not completely fit in a 1 quart mason jar. It took another about half full. If I was not pleasantly intoxicated, I would do the math! I also vacuum sealed them…and being cheap…this is how and it does work! http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Alvin-Vacuum-Sealer/

R

That would probably be the 16oz jar so 3 x 8oz jars would do the trick for a 400g bag. Vacuum sealed of course. Would it be wise to order 1200g of snuff or more to the US?

E

@Xander ill pass lol. I thought you had some cool kilnar jars or something thanms though

E

Thanks rather

F

I know securely tightening the rings down on the lids will suffice, but I can’t help but wonder what would happen if you were to pressure cook snuff!!

T

wow @oscarwabbit you’ve repeated yourself like 20 times in this thread. Will you ever buy bulk in bags?

O

I was pissed last night when I posted this thread. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!

F

pissed as in drunk I’m guessing…I thought somebody had hacked your account and was screwing with us…I’d never seen you post like that…lol!!!

P

I’ve bought bulk Toque in bags, and it’s always been very, very fresh. If storage is a concern, you can always decant it once received. But Roderick’s double-bag technique seems to do the trick, at least for short-term storage.

B

yes, yes…double bag is definitely the way to go.

B

My two Toque bulks are just as fresh today as they were a year ago when they arrived. Works fine by my standard.

W

I agree with Oscar here folks, (it’s me and you against the world mate lol),I’d rather pay a few quid more to have the snuff sent in tubs like WoS do. If they can provide tubs and still sell their bulk cheaper than Toque,(if memory serves), then why can’t Roderick do the same? Down with bags! Stefan

F

i really don’t have a dog in this fight, since the closest I’ve come to bulk is the 100gr tubs of Molens…never a bad investment btw…but I love seeing the differing views here. Personally as long as the bags aren’t busted, given the quality of Toque, I really wouldn’t have a problem with it.

R

I want it to come in a solid gold airtight container with a hooker to help me ingest it. Or, I could get it cheap, in a bag, and expend a bit of energy and put it in a jar. Present financial situation dictates that I buy in bulk to save money, and jar it up. I do that because I cannot afford to buy 20 tins. There is a 50% savings buying in bulk… Buy a damn jar, tub, machined aircraft aluminum container with an O-ring seal…or whatever and get off you ass and fill it up…geezus. Much thanks to Roderick for providing bulk at an affordable price for those of us that cannot afford to buy tins!

E

Where do you find molens in 100 grams?

N

@EricHill78 Where I get all of my Molens snuffs, directly from Molens here http://www.snuifmolens.nl/winkel/winkel\\_en.html

F

Right on n9…it seems to be much fresher straight from Jaap himself, even in the tap boxes, but the 100gr tubs are the way to go!! i highly recommend it , Eric, if you like Molens, plus you can get ALL his great snuffs there…Pompadour FTW!!!

B

I like the bulk bags/packaging personally. I have several large humidors at my house and since i got into snuff i now have just dedicated one to strictly snuff. It seems to be working great so far, holding just the right amount of moisture like it should.

E

Thanks NiN, how much does one tub come out with shipping to US? Sorry I’m not good at conversion lol… I want 100 of Latakia

C

Type the price into google, it will convert it. You will have to email Jaap for the shipping price.

F

@EricHill I’ll go ahead and warn you that the shipping is gonna be a little pricey, but it’s certainly worth it!!
