I find that they irritate my nostrills and upper lip, and I dont like the cold sensation when inhaling. I much prefer the non-mentholated snuffs, but sometimes one with no hint in the name of menthol winds up being mentholated and I’m stuck with them. Original and Genuine for instance did not suggest menthol to me. But then, Best Dark said nothing about bergamot, and it wound up being like sniffing Earl Grey. I like it though, just not all the time.
Nope, love 'em.
@matero. There are many “menthol traps” out there. Got a tin of WoS raspery in a selection box. Expexted raspberry, got menthol. Use it as a nose clearer. Best to look at snuffreviews.com before buying. Having said that all menthols dont taste of menthol. Ntsu menthol and taxi menthol taste of spearmint. If you are thinking of trying these two, its best to look up the NTSU topics on this site as they are somewhat strange snuffs.
I like menthols but can only handle them in small doses; too much and I clog up. I usually stick to non-menthols for my day-to-day snuffs and have a pinch of menthol as an occasional treat.
I love the menthol effect, I suspect most do, hence the popularity. But I find I need to be careful and not too much, but then, I don’t think for me, that just applies to menthol, but any snuff. Yesterday I did a big double line of Aniseed Extra for each nostril, and well, that was a mistake, it got me into a sneezing fit, and then through the rest of the day, and night, I was glogged up to a degree. Not fun. But I wonder if I had done that with a non menthol snuff, if it’ have done the same, and I tend to think it would have.
I could live on mint (Crumbs Of Comfort) and Menthols.
I can handle menthols pretty well, but my sinuses just might be used to it. I love WoS Extra menthol and Honey Menthol.
i enjoy menthol snuffs however, just thr slightest pinch and I clog up for days on end. i won’t be able to breath through my nose at all. Non-mentholated snuffs I can take in large pinches often and I’m fibe bar a runny nose. For this reason, I hate mentholated snuffs.
I have to agree with bipolarbear1968 – I could live on mints and menthols. In fact, I just ordered 50g of Toque Menthol merely because I was getting paranoid about running out. But to each his/her own.
…speaking of which, I just received my 50g of Toque’s Menthol today
Now some menthols are not heavy strong. Dholakia Medicated is rather mild in the menthol, and so is Super Himalaya.
I actually love them, but I have the menthol curse. Slightest amount and I am clogged for a week. Sucks. I would give anything to be able to snuff O&G daily.
I enjoy menthols, but unlike many of the posts here I find that they unclog my nose not clog it up.
I do get a rebound effect if I use menthols all day. It does a good job of unclogging but will clog up the snout if overuse. Crumbs Of Comfort (mint), no matter how much I use…never stopped me up.
I’ve heard that excessive mucous is linked to diet. I don’t know what foods are the cause. Whatever they are, I’m obviously not consuming them as I only get clogged up when I’m ill. I take menthols all day every day and have never encountered a “rebound effect”. I feel sorry for people who do though - it sounds a bit of a nuisance.
Dairy and gluton cause mucose, among other things, but you say you have no problem in that dept. Anise is mentholated as well??? Good thing you told me before I ordered some, as I love anise but have never done a commercial aniessette snuff, I just make my own with pharmacy anise essentian oil. Untill my last order arrived, I was running out of snuff besides a tin of O&G and I had to make do with that. I had enough to last me to the order but felt like I was starving and living off canned sardines or something. I don’t know, I just do not like menthol very much.
Indeed, dairy is a huge contributor to mucous. The more you use of it the more it congests you. @ matero: not all anise snuffs are mentholated. Which one did you order? Always check snuffreviews.com if there is something you absolutley cannot tolerate in a snuff such as menthol. Many snuffs’ names do not give full descriptions.
I used menthol snuffs for many years because there was nothing else available to me, but nowadays I don’t use them anymore, I’ve had enough of them. I do from time to time try out new ones just out of couriosity but after a few pinches I give them away.
@xander. Well I have not actually ordered any anisette yet, I was just saying that I definately had not expected any of them to be mentholated, and then read here that some were. I find anise oil to be extremely potent and just a tiny amount will strongly scent a whole tine nicely, so I never bought any. I will though, but which one is not mentholated?
@ matero: Toque Absinthe, McChrystal’s Anisette, Wilsons of Sharrow Aniseed & Eucalyptus. Usually something named “extra” like Aniseed Extra, “extra” often means it has menthol.
